View Full Version : Sports: Is anyone of you watching F1?

Hi,

anyone of you watching Formula 1? My brother and dad do, but I think it's boring, now.

Will Mika Häkkinen come back next year? He said he's only pausing a year, because he wanted to be with his wife and then come back 2003. It's not the same without him. Mika rules!

I just want to know what you think about this.

Let me get this straight- a German F1 fan that is a fan of Mika Hakkinen??? What about Schumi? Ain't that like betraying your country? LOL :p

To tell you the truth, my grandfather is a huge F1 fan, and so is one of my friends, but I don't enjoy it too much myself.

It is still undecided weather Mika will return. They have said that the announcement will be made by the end of July, so not long to wait anymore :)

F1 has been sooooo boring this year. That shoemaker fellow has been too dominant! Only Mika could challenge him, so this year not even Montoya has been able to do that. What a shame!

Actually I'm not really a fan, but because my dad and brother watching this every time I usually join them.

I'm a fan of our four german drivers (Schumi, Ralf Schumacher, H. H. Frentzen and "Quick Nick" Heidfeld). But I most liked it, when Schumi and Mika competed with each other. And of course, Mika is the best-looking driver :p

And now? Schumi will get the championship and Rubens will get the second place (I guess). Constructors championship will go to Ferrari. Little bit boring, isn't it?

there still is the chance that Mika returns, but if he does, I would hope that next year´s McLaren would be considerably better car and Mercedes engine a lot more powerful!

01. M Schumacher Ferrari (B) 1:12.974
02. K Raikkonen McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:12.995

the gap between Michael and Kimi 0.021. I like that the McLaren seem to be in the pace. Of course this was just a free practise, but I am really looking forward to qualifying. Maybe Kimi won´t be 5th or 6th this time but a little higher.

Of course warm up results can´t be trusted, but on a glance it would appear that Verrari would go for 2 stops and the rest 1 stop.

But maybe that is what they would like us to believe :uhh:

Oh, just heard an interview which said all teams should do atleast 2 stops, that would be the way to go on this track.

Mikkel prob wins. He´s won 5 races in Magny-Cours.

*sigh*

The start. The most interesting part of the races. Even my pulse goes up, not to mention the drivers!

Is it too cool for Michelin tyres? :uhh:

Don't know, hope Kimi's car and tyres keep on working!

Well, where to start? I am so disappointed now. Kimi almost had his first victory, but there was oil on the track and he shoot long on a corner.

On a bright note, the McLarens were very fast this weekend. Right up there. 2nd and 3rd can´t be bad! After the disappointment has faded, I am sure they will think this was a good weekend. Now next races we´ll see weather this is a trend, or weather it was just this track that suited their cars.

Congratulations to Michael Schumacher for the Championship.
Too bad it was so early in the season. Hehe, counting the points of next 3 drivers, they barely go over his points by 2 points!

Oh, this was definately the most exciting race of the season!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I am sure some of the fans would have liked Mikkel to win the Champs a bit later in the season, and not with the help of another driver´s mistake. Oh, and this makes the "thing" in Austria look worse too! Poor Rubens!

This was sorta looking like a desider in Hockenheim, but then...!

Oh, in a week's time we should hear about wheather Mika will return or not. If I´d have to guess, not. But I am hoping for a super Finn team next year, Kimi and Mika! But that will never happen, I guess. If Mika returns, it will be Kimi who would be the 3rd driver next year :uhh:

Yep! Now if you look at the points gathered by Montoya, Rubens and Ralf, you can see that they have 98 points between them!

Oh, the reason Schu has such a big gap is cause the next 4 drivers have gathered points equally between them. None of them have been consistant, so as to be a contender for the title.
But we do have an exciting race for number 2 and 3!

Teams:
Oh, there have been only few races where some other teams got to the points except the 3 big teams. I am specially disappointed for Jordan! The had such good seasons back then, but have not had a good car since. :(

Well, I think it is very sportsmanlike for McLaren not to protest that Michael overtook Kimi under yellow flags!

It would look a bit silly now and it would not be right for Kimi to get the win now and not stand at the podium in the 1st spot.

Now this even more shadows Mikkels championship, I am sorry to say, but that is just my opinion!

But in a way it sums up the fact that he has gotten so many victories undeserved. Other cars failing right in front of him or Rubens told to move to the side!
I swear by fairness, and this is the reason I dislike Schummi. Sorry. He is a great driver, no doubt about it! But he is not *AS* good as his statistics show!
But he is the World Champion for the 5th time and 3 in a row, so I congratulate him anyway. It is a great achievement :)

LovelyShania
07-21-2002, 2:44pm
I absolutely agree with you. Fairness should be the most important thing. I don't like the way he won some of his races, too! But he couldn't made responsible for all s*** out there. Team Order for example. That's a decision from his bosses (Brawn, Todt, etc.). Should he have stopped at the end of ~those~ race and pushed Rubens car over the finish line?

Please don't get me wrong! As I said, I agree with you. Poor Rubens! :( Poor Kimi :( Hope the hole thing will be more fair next year!

You are right. But I meant that his track record (wins and when compared performances to team mates) is not as good as it seems from the numbers! If you would look behind the numbers, there would be a few ifs and buts.

I did not mean to imply that he would be responsible for team orders. He is just one part of it.

The other thing: he is unnaturally lucky! If he runs to the sand he is able to continue. If he spins, he does not lose any positions. If he is second at the last few laps, the car in front of him fails to finish. Those kind of things. But yet again, that is not his fault. He is just super lucky! :p

Oh, my disliking of him started from when he hit Damon Hill´s car way back then... Then some controversial stuff, like running through the finish even though he was black flagged out of the race. And he getting the victory at Silverstone even though he got a stop and go penalty. On the last lap he drove to the pits and inside the pits he crossed the finish line. Now that´s what I call an undeserved victory!
Then the stunt with Villeneuve! Ugh!

He changed his behaviour towards his fellow racers somewhere between the Champ fights with Häkkinen. Before that he would make bad remarks about them etc. In one interview Mika said he would be having a conversation with him about his behaviour. Maybe that worked?
Anyways since the last few years fighting with Mika he really looked up to him as a good competitor and they had fair fights on the track. And I thought his behaviour was ok. But I had already disliked him for so long and for so many things that I´m afraid I have not been able to change my opinion of him. But remember, this is only my opinions. I may have some facts wrong and base my dislike on some untrue things, but I call them as I see them. It is ok, if you have a different opinion :)

Thanks for that great reply! You know what you're are talking about!:up:

As you reminded me of some of his mysterious victories and other things, I realized that I lost my faith in him. I think this started as Mika was going bad (not his fault, actually) last year.

And yep, he has much more luck than normal. Maybe the F1-God is a Schumacher fan? ;)

On the other hand, who cares? I'm not that great f1 fan, it just got me because my dad and brother are *big* fans. I like some drivers because they look good and and are smart/funny. That's it.

Well despite the fact that Ferrari employ team orders in order to allow Michael to win, I dont think anyone can deny he deserves this title. The Ferrari is far superior to the other cars on the grid this year, even the 2000 car when it ran in the first few races of the season was still beating the new 2001 cars of the other teams. I dont think anything could have stopped Michael gaining his 5th world title this year. The other teams just need to make better cars :)

I agree that since the battles with Hakkinen, Michael has been a completely different driver. Different in the fact that he is less impulsive now under pressure, 1997 being the last time he deliberately tried to take someone out to win the championship. I dont have a problem with the guy, he took Ferrari who hadnt been championship contenders for a very long time and turned them into winners. Yes the team is built around him but that is because without Schumacher and the people he brought with him from Benetton, Ferrari would probably still be in the same position as they were in the early 1990's.

It's sad to see Jordan doing so badly this year too, after 1999 and 2000 with Mugen Honda's I think everyone expected them to win more races in 2001 when they gained works Honda engines, but I think Honda have seriously dropped the ball since their return to Formula 1. They're not the same company as they were when they partnered Mclaren but hopefully that will change as it would be good to see Honda winning in F1 again, even if (as seems likely) they do drop Jordan at the end of the year.. Hopefully Jordan are looking for an exclusive deal with another manufacturer for 2004, for 2003 if they are dropped by Honda it seems likely they will be using Ford badged Cosworth's..

On a similar train of thought, Button is likely to end up at BAR next year after Renault decided to drop him in favour of another Briatore-managed driver.. Dave Richard's did nothing but praise the guy on ITV's pre-race show on Sunday. I for one hope his joining BAR will coincide with BAR and Honda getting their act together so that they give him a good car which is capable of winning races.

Yes I'm a big F1 fan in case you hadnt noticed.. lol :funny:

Oh yes, this year there was no competition for him. Sad really. In my opinion it is just plain boring to see him take a 40 sec lead and run his race... That´s why this race was so exciting! He got stuck behind Montoya at the beginning and then got the penalty. Hehe, our commentator JJ Lehto said that they should give him a penalty at every race to keep thing exciting :p.
That kept 2 or 3 drivers together as a bunch right till the end!

I believe the year he got his 3rd title after a battle with Mika, he sort of relaxed. The pressure was off and hence he could pretty easily cruise to 2 more Championships. The fact that other teams have built bad cars has certainly helped ;).

I don´t like that there are only 3 teams competing for a victory. It was great to see for example Panis win in Prost (Ligier) a few years back in Monaco.
I would like all teams to be more competitive. I would like Renault, Jordan, BAR and Jaguar do better. Oh and Sauber had a great year last year! (I guess it was even more great because Kimi drove there last year, lol). It was great to watch them succeed, like it was great to see Jordan do well yearlier years. And Stewart team had so much potential, Where did Jaguar manage to throw it? :uhh:

I am hoping McLaren have now got their act together so we could see more tight races.
At least 3 teams going for victory rather than just 2...

There are many talented drivers in Formula One that never get their chance. Jarno Trulli is fast, but he has never had a car cabable of winning. they sorta just break under him. Jenson showed so much promise, but has now faded away. Hope he comes back. I these all these young guns (also Nick Heidfeld) have suffered at the current trend of top teams to hang on to their drivers for several years.

Oh and I bet there are many many potential champions that never even get the chance to drive in F1. And then there are drivers like Takuma Sato and Alex Yoong.. I don´t know wheather to laugh or cry! :funny:

The motor side of F1. Well, car companies should invent on a long term project and not drop off after a few years. Some board members may decide somewhere that nooope, we put so much money on this and have not succeeded, let´s get out. What it would take is several years of hanging on there and learning. And finding gifted engineers, the unsung heroes of Formula One.
I think Mercedes suffered a big blow when their chief designer lost his life in that plane crash.

It is all about finding the right men to right places (Newey: Williams and McLaren; Schumi, Brawn, Todt etc. for Ferrari....)

And the obscene amount of money they spend on those headquarters and trucks and buses   . But maybe that is a big part of the "glamour" of F1....

Oh, I am quite big a fan myself too ;)

I agree, F1 is more interesting when every once in a while you have a team win who you really did not expect to. Stewart in 1999 and Jordan in 1999/2000 for example. Where Jaguar went wrong when they bought Stewart is that they took a small close-knit team that worked well together and expanded the workforce by a hell of a lot, creating what was ultimately a completely different team. I can see why Stewart/Jaguar looked like a good option to Irvine when he joined them after nearly winning the championship for Ferrari, if they had stayed the same team he could have even won races with them..

As for Jenson, I dont think he's really gotten any worse. The 2000 Williams was a great car, especially when you consider it was BMW's first year in F1. When he joined Benetton in 2001 the car there wasnt great and was built with a different style of driver in mind, one which was more comfortable with just throwing the car around on the track whereas Jenson for the most part is a fairly smooth driver and needs a car which will respond to that. Hopefully the 2003 BAR will be such a car since they officially announced he was joining them today.

I would be very surprised if Sato was still in the Jordan next year, although if he isnt that brings about the question of who they would take instead. Panis looks set to leave BAR as Villeneuve has a water-tight contract for 2003, there's also been continuous talk of McNish leaving Toyota in favour of possibly Frentzen or Wurz. Personally I think McNish and Jordan could be a good combination. Benson and Hedges like it when Jordan have a British driver and were disappointed when Justin Wilson was not hired. If Jordan took on McNish, B&H might be tempted to up their sponsorship money again. Personally I would like to see
McNish in F1 for next year as he fought for so many years to get there and when he finally made it he just gets everyone talking about how he wont be there next year. I think he's put in some quite respectible performances for his first year in F1 so hopefully he will have a drive next year.

Talking about driving styles: The new Ferrari seems to suit Rubens very well! He has been like a new man this season. I hope now that he will have all the Ferrari support, he will do well for the remaining of the season. But I won´t be happy if I see Michael pulling to the side to give him victories.. I mean that it would be fair considering all the times he let Michael past, but it just wouldn´t be the same, you know!

I believe Sato was in Jordan because of Honda, and now that they will lose the engines, I hope they throw Sato out too. He just does not impress me much. ;)

Well, I don´t know much about McNish. He has not showed anything that I would consider brilliant, but for a rookie, sure, he has driven quite well.

And poor Fisichella, always at the wrong team at the wrong time!
Oh, I wonder if Keke is able to find Panis a seat in some team...
Heidfeld might stay with Sauber, not any openings in the big 3 teams...

Well, another race this weekend! Hope it will be as exciting as last week´s race was! I doubt it will but I am hoping it will be.
And it will be interesting to see the new Hockenheim circuit too!
