Hi, why don't we all meet at the Matagami Hotel where Shania got her start.

Holy mahatmaghandi! Where's that?
Do they serve wild game mad cow meat?

Seriously, I think you may have what could be a fine suggestion.

I have one of the better biographical books on Shania, but it's one drawback is that there's no index to look up stuff when people mention these things.

Hmn, I've been looking at my printout of Timmins map downloaded from one of my bookmarked links, to see the locations of lodging of forum members who've described their plans to attend.

Looks like Matt is at the center of the action at main, full service hotel (Senator) in the center of town on Mountjoy at Algonquin.

Monica, Manu, Carol and Jasmine are at the Bon Air at 355 Algonquin Blvd E. I take this to mean it's in the 3rd block east from towncenter at Mountjoy and Algonquin. Maybe most of them feel more comfortable staying on the side of town closest toward Europe.

Sam and Steph are (last I knew) staying at the Comfort Inn, 939 Algonquin Blvd E. They're both from 'the east'ern side of Ontario also.

I'm only looking at the last 10 days of posts, so there's probably more. I remember seeing posts from Slope, Wild One, Razorback, saying they were attending. Don't remember for sure about Winemaker. My modem is a little too slow to go back and review all. Oh, and now Michael has just signed on. So we're up to a dozen, at least.

I talked with Paulette again at Super 8 at 730 Algonquin Blvd E. and updated on rates and availability. One person (non smoking) is the same as for 2 persons $88/night, and $10 for each additional person. And they do have rooms left, but are filling up. These rates are local currency, I believe, which is significantly below US dollar currency, but there is also Canadian tax, which is 16% (whew!)

Then I called Travelodge. That is at 1136 Riverside Dr. which is on the west side of Timmins, about a mile from towncenter. (This is only fitting since I'm coming from the west and we don't want the town to get overbalanced on one side and tip into the huge open gold mine pit.) I'm guessing this is in a typical "strip" of motels and restaurants in a newer area on edge of town, as is true for so many US towns of this size now. Isabell said they still have non smoking rooms available. Choice of 1 and 2 beds, at $90 and $100 respectively. It is described somewhere as one of the nicest places to stay in Timmins. Has cable with movies, and significant added amenities as listed in our link above this forum for "Accomodations." She asked me to place reservations while I was thinking about various lodging options. I asked for some information about the locations of attractions in Timmins first. She connected me to a person on duty named Rick.

Voila! Rick is the member on our forum named "SuperTimmins." What a cool guy. He's got a wonderful, gentle but rugged, French-Canadian accent. He knows the town and attractions like the back of his hand. And he's very supportive in giving descriptions of places we're interested in, including eateries, tours, the location of the Shania Center, aesthetic, cultural and recreational attractions.

Hey Monica, Manu, Matt: just above is a good piece of the puzzle for us making desired connections to Timmins activities and events next summer. Another potential piece that just came in, Michael M sent me an email address that may connect to Shania. Maybe he can elaborate on that.

Notwithstanding my subconscious fears of the town tipping into the gold mine pit, the following information and kind clarifications from Rick helped me decide to make reservations wit' ch'all on the sunrise side of town.

As SuperTimmins mentioned in this forum, Travelodge and Super8 are jointly owned, so it does not matter to them which of the two places I (or others) choose to stay at. My separate maps of Ontario, Timmins, and the Goldmine/Shania Center do not tell me where the Opening is located in relation to motel sites. Rick gave me two solutions to that. He is sending me an email with a detailed map of the whole town of Timmins, unlike mine which has only major streets named. Second, he said that the Shania Center and Opening (and Gold Mine tour) is very close to the Super8. People can walk to the Opening and Center from the motel. This will save having to drive and find parking space at the Opening. Rick also works at the Super8, and he may become manager there eventually, possibly even by the time we get there. Won't it be great if the manager of the motel nearest the Opening is also a forum member here?
Apparently, there is a Hollinger Park right behind the Super8. And the Shania Center may be right next to or close to the park. Casey's Bar and Grill is right beside Super8, almost on the same lot. That might be a suitable watering hole for forum members to wet their whistle. Gilley Lake is also behind the Super8, and there's walking trails, lit up and goes for miles. Like a conservation park with animals and all kinds of birds. Also nearby Super8 are other eateries like Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonalds, Harvey's. A big grocery store is on the nearest corner.

For kids, there's a water park at Hollinger Park, and mini golf course. Also mining tours at several places, including Kidd Creek Zinc mine, and lumbering tours. The Timmins museum is in (Salt/South?) Porcupine, about 5 minutes drive away. Good place for those interested in history of Timmins (like me, as author of 300 page history book).

Speaking of history books, (uh oh, there he goes again, on another tangent with his stray synapses) my co-author, 97 year old aunt and godmother, for whom I'm responsible; is a walking history book. And she's got a good sense of humor and is more entertaining than I am.

However, if she continues to go in the hospital with breathing complications every few months, I may have to cancel my trip plans for Timmins. I'd invite y'all to send her an email in care of her residence to keep her cheered up, but although she is now a rarely challenged authority on the 1870's to 1920's (almost no one else is alive from that time), she's uneasy about some future technologies, like computers and the Internet.

As of now, I'm registered at Super8, for June 29 thru July 1. I can call to change dates etc., and can cancel up to 4pm of the day before arrival. If other members want to make reservations there, you can do it direct yourself, or if you want to have rooms nearby other Shania.net forum members, you can contact me or maybe Rick.

Hmn, I wonder why my postings are so long. Same thing happens when I go eat. The other people are done in 5 minutes, and I'm still chewing away for 20. Londo, do you have small teeth too? http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif You civilized rascal!

We've probably all had questions, and will have more, about things in Timmins related to this trip. I encourage you to focus a bit on them or jot them down and start asking away. Rick is a great resource. We could showcase his talents here. It might help him become chief honcho, which in turn cold help us when we get there. If there's one thing I've paid a dear price to learn in my many years, it's that knowing a lot, often is not worth as much as could be expected. It's "who you know," and how you interact with them, that can make the difference between having a life of lip smacking success, versus a life of quiet desperation, which is encountered by so many, so often.

Hi Rob, im going to try to put answers to all your questions in this forum. Here we go,
Mattagami Hotel is not a place for the family to gather around with the wife and kids, why? its a strip bar. The corner of Mountjoy St. and Algonquin Blvd. is the center of Timmins, and this is where the Senator Hotel is located. This hotel only as underground parking and limited. Its not walking distance to the Shania Centre. The Shania Centre is located in the south-east section of the city near the Hollinger Park in which this is where Shania played the July/99 concert for her hometown. The Shania Centre is surounded by the Hollinger Park a golf course and the Gold Mine Tour. The entrance to the Shania Centre will be between the park and the golf course. The park itself as a kids water park but no water slides, grandstand for bands, baseball diamond, beach volly ball pits and lots of kids stuff to play with like swings and slides. In front of the park is McDonalds, KFC, Harveys, Swiss Chalet, Burger King and Tim Horton's coffee shop. Beside the Burger King is a large grocery store. Across the street from the grocery store is the Super 8 Motel. Beside Super 8 is Casey's Bar & Grill. A great watering hole. Behind the grocery store and Burger King is Gillis Lake conservation park. This park as a lighted walking trail that goes around the lake and connects to other walking trails around the city. If you love birds, this is the park for you. The Travelodge Hotel is in the west end of the city but near our biggest shopping mall, the Timmins Square. The Timmins Museum is located in South Porcupine about 7 minutes by car. I do know that Domtar and Tembec wood plants give out summer tours of there plants. Also you could visit the big Super pit at the Dome minesite. There is also Cedar Meadows Wildlife Tour in which you could see every animal possible including...yes Rob..MOOSE.
There is two beer stores, one on Park St. and one on Algonquin Blvd.W. The liquor store is on Waterloo Rd. in the Hollinger Court beside Wendy's Restaurant. For the one that like movies...we have a movie house with six theaters. The downtown area consist of about 60 different speciality shops and the famous Amigo's Dance Club which holds over 800 people. The downtown also as the famous Maple Leaf Country Bar. And this bar is where Shania really started to sing when she was young, another Canadian singer also started there...Stompin Tom Connors. Timmins as over 40 different bars and pubs. No shortage of places to drink. At one time in the 70's Timmins had over 60 bars & Hotels. There was stories that some guys tried to have one beer in every bar in one night, they didn't make it. Lots of great stories and history in Timmins. I remember watching Shania sing rock & roll at JP's Bar when she was part of the group Longshot. She gave out quite the show and still does. Took enough space in this forum but hopefully this is enough info for all the Shania Fans that want to visit the City With A Heart Of Gold.
Also Rob, I will send you that Timmins map soon. So long for now.

Wild One,

Did you get an answer on the truck parking question?

I notice over on the Shania Twain US Fan Club website at www.shania-twain.org, (http://www.shania-twain.org,) they have someone who knows about a campsite about 4 miles south of town where he's going to park his long motorcoach. Someone on their Timmins Trip forum also has, or was getting the info on campsites and RV parks etc in the Timmins area.
