TEACHER Kevin Gilvary was horrified when he discovered an inch-long bug was living in his back — and had been for THREE MONTHS.
It got there when the 47-year-old was on holiday in Peru and was bitten through his shirt by an insect as he walked alongside the River Amazon.
The bug was carrying a tiny South American botfly larva which immediately burrowed beneath Kevin’s skin.
But he did not have a clue it was there . . . and thought the growing sore on his back was a mosquito bite becoming infected.
He went to the doctor after complaining of stabbing pains and was given antibiotics. But the pain was being caused by the larva, nearly as big as a pound coin, moving around.

Kevin found the cause of the problem by chance while changing a dressing . . . and saw the monster’s head peeking from his wound.
Kevin said: “I was looking at the bite in the mirror when I saw this yellow head — wiggling. I called my partner Christine and with one squeeze the larva popped out.”
Tropical disease expert Dr Matthew Dryden, of Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital, said: “The larva is deposited on a mosquito and detaches when it feels the warm skin.
“It burrows into the skin.”
Kevin, of Titchfield, Hants, added: “I always felt something was inside as I felt these sudden pains — it was like being stabbed by a sharp point.”
