THOUSANDS of Corrs fans have signed up to take part in the Concern Fast which was launched by singing star Andrea Corr.

It takes place on November 28 and aims to raise at least £1,250,000 for people at risk of starvation in southern Africa.

Last year's fast netted a total of £850,000.

Corrs' fan websites are flagging up the charity event and anyone logging on can click straight onto the Concern website.

So far more than 50,000 referrals from the Corrs fan websites have been recorded from a range of countries including Brazil, Hong Kong, Philippines, Argentina and Sweden.

Concern said the response was overwhelming. This time last year only 80 people had registered online.

David Gough, head of Concern's operations in Northern Ireland, said: "This money is vital to saving lives and I would encourage anybody else out there to consider giving up something, holding a fundraising event or fasting for one day, as every penny helps."

The money will go directly to help prevent a humanitarian disaster in southern Africa.

A food shortage is creating one of the worst crises to threaten the continent since the 1984 famine in Ethiopia. An estimated 14 million people are at risk, with children among the most vulnerable.

In Northern Ireland, 140 schools, 275 companies and over 1,000 individuals have already signed up to carry out fundraising activities or go without food.
