(Album Cover: Up by Shania Twain)
Up
Shania Twain
Mercury
Rating 1 (out of five)
This is a perfect record for people who don't like music.
Up is a "product" brilliantly designed to sell to the widest demographic possible: men like Shania Twain because she looks great; women like her because she is non-threatening, but still exudes a definite female confidence and sense of humour. And children adore Twain because her lyrics are simple enough that a four-year-old could recite them verbatim, and fully understand every word, after three or four listens.
It should be duly noted that this isn't the first time that this has been attempted in the music industry. It's attempted every day -- but it's never been pulled off to this extent. The two-disc set for Up includes a "pop" version and a "country" version (just add fiddle) of the same 19 songs, while a third CD with a "Latin-Asian" feel is also available. That's right: men, women, children, country fans, pop fans and world music fans from the four corners of the earth, just as she suggests on the album's first single in both the pop and country formats, Shania's "Gonna Getcha Good."
The "product" is pulled together sonically by husband, record producer, co-writer and noted turd-polisher Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
To mention specific songs or specific lyrics would suggest tuneworthiness for generic bits of multi-formatted and interchangeable dreck -- and, again, Up has absolutely nothing to do with music.
But if Shania Twain is everything that's wrong with music in 2002, try and explain that to the 34 million people (yes, 34 million) who bought Come On Over and made Shania Twain the single biggest female artist of all time.
For fans who have never been to a record store, Up is available at all Safeway, Zellers and Wal-Mart locations.

Has any critic actually loved the album. I have read that some like certain songs, but has any published critic anctually said they love the album?

Yes, there have been alot of good reviews. For every negative review, there's been a positive one to balance things out. USA TODAY gave UP! a nice review (3 out of 4 stars) on the front page of their entertainment section, and had alot of great things to say about Shania.

If they can say that Shania's music isn't music, then we can say that this review isn't a review.
And we should probably tell their editors this, too.

USA Today, Billboard, and two or three national papers all gave it very good reviews. For the most part, it's no different then COO, or for that matter The Woman in me. No one can understand Shania, so they don't know how to review her music.

The whole basis of the article ius how much **** they can throw at the album. All they're doing is saying they think it sucks, but their suchidiots that they can't string a few senetnces together to even try to say way. Twats like this should NOT be allowed to write anything that the general public has a chance in hell of reading (yeah, yeah I know freedom of the press....)
That is the stupidest review I have read yet! Heck, I doubt they even listened to the album!!!!!!!! They didn't mention any song names, or anything. That is pathetic. They wrote that review before the album was made.
