All Woman!
Shania Twain is most definitely back! Here she chats to Margherita about motherhood, her latest single and teaching the contestants on BBC’s ‘Fame Academy’.
You've recently become a new mum, is it hard juggling family life and the career?
It's more tiring, that's for sure. I control my own schedule and I don't fill it up as much as I used to so that I have the time for my son. But it's still hard to be a working mother no matter what you do or how much control you have.
The video to your new single is outrageous!
It was pretty fun putting it together. I'm not really crazy about doing videos, but I do love the creative part of it - putting it together, being a part of creating the look and all of those sorts of things. I enjoy the production part of it. This one was particularly interesting because of the animation involved.
And what about that skin-tight black outfit!
One of my demands is that everything has to be comfortable. I don't care how great it looks, if it's not comfortable I can't stay in it for ten hours doing a video. So it was very comfortable and not as tight as it looked!
The new album 'Up' is released in the UK in three weeks time, why did you pick the single 'Gonna Get You Good' first?
There's so much TV promotion that surrounds a first single from an album. I find TV a very sterile environment compared to concert touring, and I really wanted to have a song that had the kick and the punch to get me into the spirit of feeling like I'm in concert. You need a certain type of song to be able to do that, and this one has that. That was a big part of it. I also wanted something that people would be familiar with as far as I'm concerned - being able to say 'That sounds like Shania'.
How is it having a baby in your life?
Because I waited a little bit longer to have a child, I can honestly say I'm not sure I would ever have reached the point of wholeness or depth within myself without having a child. If I'd had a child at 22, I wouldn't have known if I ever would have got there. I'm already in my mid-thirties.
How old do you feel?
I don't really feel anything. I don't feel any differently than I did when I was 25. Maybe I'll be 25 forever, I don't know! I feel good and I feel energetic. Age is sort of irrelevant now.
Who do you call first when you get some good news?
My sister Ceri in Canada.
Which film do you watch over and over again?
A Jim Carey movie and 'Life Is Beautiful'. I think it's something you have to watch every year.
What's your favourite landmark in London?
This sounds so commercial of me, but I have to say Harrods! It's the food hall - it's incredible, they have beautiful, beautiful things! The first thing that comes to mind are the pastries.
What's your weakness?
I don't have any weaknesses!
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Be honest. Honesty is the best policy.
Which is the one record in your collection that is more embarrassing than any other?
Probably something by the Bay City Rollers.
You've recently taught at the BBC 'Fame Academy', what have you been saying to the kids?
I always stress the songwriting and original creativity. Something about you needs to stay you and original no matter what you learn from anyone or any school. I had a really great time with them. They all seemed very sincere in wanting to learn. I didn't get the feeling that their ambitions were entirely based on being famous, I think they were genuinely interested in learning and becoming good at what they do. That was refreshing.
Did it remind you of you starting out?
It did, although this crew are a lot older than I was when I was starting. They're not kids. When I started I was a kid and I was coming from a very different place. When I was their age I was already way in to my career so it's hard to me to relate to where they're at in a sense. I would have dreamt to have done what they're doing, and going there gave me that feeling.
