why OLDER women don't like shania twain??

ive noticed, ,,,,

that MOST (not all, but most) , females over the age of shania twain, i.e., over the age of 34, dont really like shania twain.

they either dont like her, dont care for her, or never heard of her.

older women seem to be the only demographic group in the world that does not like shania twain. every other group in the world seems to like her.

all the young girls like shania(and they all sing along when her songs are played), all the young guys like shania, all the old guys
like shania twain.

just take a look at this forum, there are almost no older women that are fans.

look at the audiences at her concerts, there are very few older women, unless dragged there by their husbands.

im told that almost no older women buy her cd's and tapes at the chain music stores,
unless it is for a gift for their sons, daughters, or grandchildren .

and this is true, not only in canada and america, but throughout the world. shania has fans in asia, africa, europe, and everywhere, but not the older women in those places.

so why is it that "OLDER" females dont care for shania twain, or dont like her?

im sure there are some exceptions, but among the hundreds of older women that i know, only a handful like her, and even among those, they dont like her that much.

i have a couple of ideas why this is so myself, but i want to hear what other people think.

I think this is a common attitude in all older women. Maybe they have another things to think on like their kids husband, work, chores and stuff...

I have seen another common attitude of this group of women, and some of they just dislike young women because of how they look like..I mean, because they are beautiful, young and everything...Some of them envy young women...

Could it be that most of the women you are referring to are disgusted by the way their husbands/boyfriends drool all over themselves every time they see her? i would like to respectfully disagree with you about elvis. but im glad you brought him up, that is who i was thinking of when i posted this item.

i dont know how old you are, but i went thru the entire elvis craze. elvis never had a problem with the guys not liking him, in fact that is what made him so popular with the teenagers in the beginning. the guys did not mind seeing him, or listening to him. the young guys thought elvis was cool too.

but it took elvis many years to be a super-star. the older people, both male and female, did not like elvis. also, buddy holly consistently outsold elvis in records, and elvis' movies were poorly attended.

elvis' big problem was that the older people did not like him in the first half of his carrer, and there is where i saw the parallel with shania.

it wasnt until colonel parker got elvis to appear at las vegas that the older people started to like elvis, and made him a super-star among all sexes and ages.

once it became "cool" for the older group to say they saw elvis at las vegas, elvis was forever a super-star among all ages and sexes.

i was wondering if mutt can think of something that can convert older women over to be shania fans, the way colonel parker got older men and women to like elvis.

or being too concerned with other things to be concerned with shania, but men are buzy too, and older women still find time to watch and keep up with everything rosie odonnell is doing every day. so being buzy with other things doesnt explain it either.

if they have time to be strong fans of rosie odonnell, then they have the time to listen to shania.

ok, "36" is splitting hairs, at 36 you are still about her age, and you can still identify with shania. but you will see a huge dropoff in the next older age group of women.

im sure mutt,with his marketing research, knows that the affluent and heavy spending older women demographic group would be nice to convert into shania fans.

and yes, there are a few,
ok, many,
older women that like shania.
but MOST of them do not.
shania is least popular with older women than any other demographic group.

I just wonder what the demographic for older women purchasing music forthemselves actually is. It couldn't be very high anyway. It probably falls right inline sales wise with Shania's sales. I know quite a few "Older Women" that don't seem to have a problem with her at all.
As far as never hearing about her, a majority in that demographic may listen to the radio infrequently, not at all, or to oldies type stations. I believe those to be fairly common amongst older women, for what ever reason. Of ourse I didn't say all women. There are bound to be the few that will just not like her, regardless of demographic. Nobody is liked 100%.
Also about not knowing who she is, I guess you can say that she has been on enough T.V. shows, Magazines,aswell as tabloid covers to know who she is. However there are the few that still wouldn't know. I know a few older women that didn't really know who she was and when I told them the names of a few of her songs, they really liked them and also started noticing her on the covers of magazines and T.V.

Hi! I´m rather "older" woman at the age of 37, come from Europe and love Shania, trying to get all her videos, CDs and things like that. I don´t think older women don´t like Shania because she is beautiful, I think the reason is that they really have much to do, they simply are too busy to go to ANY concert or to follow news in music world, no matter if the singer is young/ old/ man/ woman.

Well I think one main reason 'older' women don't like Shania is that maybe they don't relate to her songs, especially on 'Come On Over'. When Shania and Mutt went from 'Woman In Me' to 'Come On Over', they opted for commercial appeal over content. 'Woman In Me' was a Grammy winner for a good reason: Shania presented herself as an introspective woman with a fun side. 'Come On Over' won the teenagers with mindless fluff (Man! I Feel Like a Woman) but didn't take music to a new level like WIM did.

I have an answer, it may not be right though.
I think that the age generation - age around 30-40 doesn't like Shania because that was not the kinda music that they was born into. Like say people around 15-20 like rock and people 60-80 might like slow, classical or something. That must've listened to it in early parts of their life and so were grown into a different era. Different to Shania fans. If you don't know what I'm talking about - talk to someone who does!
If you get it, it's just an idea - I'm sure there'll be a lot of questions. All that is is my answer.

I think you're onto something. Most of the ladies I know in the 60-80 crowd still don't like Elvis either, or rock and roll, or even golden oldies unless they're from the 1940's or before.

Sorry, at your age of 53, I don't see you as an "older" woman yet. You sound like you have a young person's outlook and spirit. Many women your age that I know however, are busy clucking about their daughters being too this or too that (opposite of conservative), and worrying about the consequences, whilst forgetting that they did pretty much the same thing themselves within their cultural climate, at that age.

And I'm a dunce to try to answer at such a late hour, when my energy is gone, and I have too little reserve to inhibit my flawed thinking.

1. I suspect many older women who see and hear Shania are uncomfortable at comparing their male contemporaries' view of them to their male comtemporaries' view of Shania. They'd just as soon forget about her.

2. "Most" (not all) older women prefer less revealing physical imagery and sexuality, than they see in Shania's videos. I know a very nice person who was plenty enticing when she was under 40. Now's she's up a bit in years, she condemns almost the same things she used to do, which at the time, I thought were very tasteful, respectable and appropriate (and certainly very pleasing).

Your reference to "older women" as being 36 or more meant something different to me than to most others and perhaps even to you. My gut feeling took over and reinterpreted that to be most women with an "older" or more conservative mindset, not necessarily any specific age. But somehow, my mind does not think of a 36 yr old, or even a 40 yr old as an older woman. Guess reactions to a comparative term like "older" are relative to the self image (include age or mindset) of the perceiver.

I had several other items in mind to answer here too. But then I read where the thread lead to, and I kinda have to acknowledge where those ideas are going. And in the process, my own ideas got blurred. Maybe you're glad I didn't get even more windy.

And now that I see some of your proposed reasons for asking the question, maybe I was wrong about you're being a rat to ask.

I know PLENTY of "older" women who LOVE Shania and her music. Some belong to this forum.
Shania's music apeals to every generation, that's why she's so successful!
Not only young and old males listen to her CDs. But also women of all ages!

The last thing Shania's music is, is "mindless fluff"!
COO is a brlliant album that earned Shania 8 Grammy nominations, and 2 Grammys! Each song on COO has a meaning! It is not "fluff" when you decide to put a couple FUN songs that you can dance to on an album!
The reason why COO was more successful and appealed to a younger generation is because it was not your traditional country. Most teenagers choose to listen to pop, so that's why COO was successful with the younger crowds.

Alot of men are happy with their wive/girlfriends and some men just don't find Shania attractive. The men I know don't. I know lots of women who aren't jealous of Shania, myself for one. Why is it that just because they don't like her they're automatically jealous?

I think it's because women in their 30s and older aren't suppose to be doing what Shania's doing; that is, flaunting herself, wearing midriff shirts, posing in sexy photos.

Women in those age groups are suppose to be mature, calm, controlled, sophisticated; the business suit wearing type. That's what I imagine women in those age groups to be like. Kind of like an Oprah Winfrey audience.

Yes, I don't know you. But what does that have to do with anything? I was speaking GENERALLY. I don't expect literally every single woman in their 30s or older to be like an Oprah Winfrey audience member.

I have spoken to many 'older womam' on this subject...The response is varied, depending on the type of culture the person comes from.
I add, this is not the results of a national poll! But I would say it is fair to say that some womem that are instutionalised in their home/married life, find Shania an exception to the rule..would possibly love to be/look like her and even feel theatened by her....

I agree there a very few older women who don't know of or don't like her. But I would have to say this, my mother is 50 and she loves Shania's music. She knows all the words and thinks she a great personality! Maybe the other women who don't like her because they either have issues or don't know Shania's background of her life. I'll be listening to Shania's music for the rest of my life. I totally enjoy her music and respect her! So, gary just see how many "older" women respond. I can tell a few have already responded.
