Police say a Washington, D.C., man ate the evidence after trying to pay with a suspicious check at a Stafford County Wal-Mart.
Deputies ended up charging the man with assaulting two employees at the store on Garrisonville Road, but say their investigation into the check stalled when he chewed it up and swallowed it.
Deputy Timothy Martin was called to the North Stafford store about 5:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a fight.
When he arrived, he found store security officers holding a man in the customer service area, Stafford Sheriff's Capt. David Roderick said.
The security guard told police the man had tried to pay with a suspicious check, Roderick said. When the guard took the check and the man's driver's license back to the customer service area for further investigation, the man demanded his identification back and offered to pay cash.
The guard told him it was too late, he had already called the Sheriff's Office, Roderick said.
The man then tried to grab the driver's license, knocking the guard down, Roderick said. A scuffle ensued, he said, with the man fighting the security guard and elbowing a female employee.
During the fight, the man ate the check, Roderick said.
But the guard eventually subdued the man and held him until deputies arrived.
Khalid Naji-Allah, 29, of West Virginia Avenue in Northeast Washington, was charged with two counts of assault and battery and one count of carrying fraudulent identification, Roderick said.
The suspicious check remained under investigation yesterday.
"We don't know if it was stolen or altered or what," Roderick said.
