From Billboard...

Jones' set performed consistently enough to take advantage of larger drops of albums by other artists, most notably Shania Twain. Her "Up!" (Mercury Nashville) rung in 2003 with a massive 68% blow to sales of 83,000 copies, which sends "Up!" down 2-8 on the chart.

Her 7 week total now stands at.....2,992,485

Here is the whole article:

Featuring hits by Eminem and 50 Cent, the Shady/Interscope soundtrack to "8 Mile" is on top of The Billboard 200 for a second week in a row, and fifth overall. The album survived a 62% drop to sales of 119,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, to narrowly lead over Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" (Blue Note/Columbia), up this week 7-2 despite taking a 46% sales hit to 188,000 copies.

With the New Year's Day holiday falling midweek and a lack of major new releases, sales were predictably down compared to the previous week.

Teen pop artist Avril Lavigne continues to show tenacity as "Let Go" (Arista) weathered a 57% dip to sales of 113,000 copies to hold at No. 3 on The Billboard 200. The Dixie Chicks also maintain their position, holding at No. 4 on sales of 97,000 copies of "Home" (Monument/Columbia), a 63% drop from the previous week's total. Expect healthy performances next week from the Dixie Chicks, Jones, and Lavigne, as the three received a combined 14 Grammy nominations to dominate the media's entertainment coverage.

Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" (RCA) endured a 54% sales hit to 95,000 copies, and the album jumps 8-5 on The Billboard 200. Jennifer Lopez's "This Is Me ... Then" (Epic) suffered a 59% slide to 94,800 copies, and the set falls one slot to No. 6, while Justin Timberlake's "Justified" (Jive) is also down one to No. 7 on a 61% dip to sales of 86,000 copies.

For a second week, Aaliyah's "I Care 4 U" (Blackground/Universal) rounds out the top-10 of The Billboard 200 with sales of 80,000 units. The set is once again the top seller in urban markets, and tops Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for a third-straight week.

Shania's Up song is being played regularly on country radio, but she needs to get the video out ASAP.

She also needs to get a pop song out ASAP, along with an eye-catching new video for the VH1 crowd.

If she does these things soon, and once her AMA, Tonight Show, and SuperBowl performances air, she'll get back UP the charts.

Oh yeah, no doubt about it. She is the most resiliant artist out there. The energizer bunny so to speak. The 68% blow comment from billboard is typical. When she is doing good, it is praise, praise, praise, but when she starts to slip the slightest, it is bad, bad, bad. The comment was a bit unnerving but like I said very typical of the music industry. Oh well. With new songs out, new vidoes coming, Jay Leno, AMA's, and the superbowl, along with a host of magazine articles and covers, she'll be back on top soon, and they will be back praising her again, just like they should, she'll get em' good!

Am I missing something or what?

Shania drops 68 percent
The Dixie Chicks drop 63 percent
Eminem drops 62 percent
Juistin Timberlake drops 61 percent
Jennifer Lopez drops 59 percent
Avril Lavigne drops 57 percent
Christina Aguilera drops 54 percent

Shania has the biggest drop, from a percentage point of view, but her dip certainly wasn't a major abberation with the other leaders to make Billboard write like Up! is about to be thrown in the discount bin at the local music store.

Call me the eternal optimist, but 83k in one week still figures out to be 4.316 million in one year.

Also, if you switch Emminen's and Shania's loss percentages around (from the totals from last week) you'd get:

1) Norah Jones 118k
2) Shania 103k
3) Emminen 100k

HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE: A few months into the sales of Come On Over, the media slant was that it was bombing in comparison to The Woman in Me. Mercury Record even felt the need to hold a press conference with charts to prove otherwise and history certainly validated that.

what is it takes so long for Shania to release the next single? shania is pretty careful these days. on COO, "don't be stupid" was released in December of 1997 along with the video. that's what shania supposed to be. hopefully she's not a chicken or anything.

Nah, she's not chicken. :) But it is a bit odd that nobody seems to know what the next single will be, even though we all assume it will be released within the next few weeks.

I know sub-100k totals for a week is not what Shania and her people have in mind, but I also think that that might be less dangerous in her mindset than being overexposed.

With the momentum from all her upcoming magazine appearances, the AMA performance and the Super Bowl, it wouldn't surprise me if we don't see any new video until the last week of January.

As Shania proved in COO, she really is a marathoner more than a sprinter.

Oh, definitely. UP! is in it for the long haul, just like COO was.

I guess I'm just impatient. I want to see some new videos and hear some new singles on my radio right now! :p

So she's #2 on the Country Chart behind the Dixie Chicks?!

That stinks!!! I wanted her to set a new record or something.

That is a big fall, but she is still in the top 10, making it easier for a quick rise to number 1 again :D A new single, new video and T.V. appearences will soon rectify the situation.

If we would get a new single soon in Germany, IGGG will drop fast out of the cahrts. And it does well now. Its on 4 in the RadioCharts (last week 3)

But its neccessary to have a new single in the US or UK.
Wasn't Come on Over 50 weeks at number one in a row at the Billboard COuntry charts??

Hi All! I am confused about all of the talk of a new single here in the U.S. Are you saying that Shania should release her third single now and not wait for "UP" (the single) to go any higher on the Charts? I know "UP" is moving slowly on the country charts but it has only been on the charts for 8 weeks and we had Holiday music for a couple weeks! I think it should start to move better now it is at #24 this week and it was at #24 last week. If I were Shania I would wait a few more weeks to see how it does!:)
