LOS ANGELES(AP) - A gunman who apparently believed his neighbors were demons shot to death a 67-year-old man and critically injured his son before surrendering, police said.
The man was arrested Monday evening after a three-hour standoff at a North Hollywood home.
Hector Bisente was shot several times in the torso and was pronounced dead at a hospital, Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman David Campbell said Tuesday.
George Bisente, believed to be in his 40s, was listed in critical to serious condition, Adelaida De La Cerda, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said Tuesday.
The identity of the gunman was not immediately released by police.
A gunman in a house across the street fired about 15 rounds at Bisentes as they stood in their driveway shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, police Lt. Horace Frank said.
"He believed his neighbors were demonic. That's why he went on the rampage," Detective Oris Pace said.
Neighbors who heard gunshots and saw the two men on the ground called police. Officers reached the victims and put them into ambulances while the gunman apparently crouched on the second floor of his house, Frank said.
Police sealed off the area, evacuating about 10 people from nearby homes and eight students and staff members from a nearby kindergarten.
Special weapons team officers, dogs and helicopters were used to search the area. Officers eventually were able to contact the alleged gunman and talk him into surrendering.
