Mila kilo zorion

beste urte berri bat,
duzulako hasten.
Baietz asmatu zenbat,
dituzun betetzen, zergatik ez ditugu
txaloka kontatzen? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ...

We wish you a thousand happy birthdays
because you're turning another year now,
I bet we can guess what age you're turning
we don't we count them clapping? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Yup. you're right! GUAPITO means handsome. We also use that word to describe some body who is good looking here in our country (some word in our language were borrowed from the Spanish language :D )

example: "Napakaguapo ni Raul!" or "Guapito si Raul!"---!"Raul is so handsome!" :D

So Guapito can be used for a woman as well?

To be fair, in English we sometimes use the word "handsome" when referring to a woman. But I think generally it is not used, particularly because it usually is regarded as "fainter" praise of her looks than say, "beautiful" or "gorgeous".

Guapito is not generally used to refer to a woman(he,he you might get evil looks from a pretty woman if you address her with this term) :D. The word "MAGANDA" is better suited to praise the looks of a beautiful woman.:D

Chocolate - Cioccolata

Thank you - Grazie
Please - Perfavore

Danish!:D

Don't remember if I have already posted those:uhh:

Chocolate - chokolade
Good night - god nat
Good morning - god morgen
Good day - god dag
Good evening - god aften
Yes, No - ja, nej
Thank you - tak
Please - Eeehh, don't think we have a word as such for please:uhh: So I will try to explain... There are 2 senses of please in Danish:

1.
"Please pass me the chocolate" = "Ræk(pass) mig(me) venligst(please) chokoladen(the chocolate)" but no one really says that.
We would say: "Vil du være venlig at række mig chokoladen?" = "Would(vil) you(du) please(være venlig) pass(at række) me(mig) the chocolate(chokoladen)?"

2.
"2 pieces of chocolate, please" = 2 stykker(pieces) chokolade(chocolate), tak(please) "
Here please actually means thank you.

But no one is ever that friendly to use please in Denmark.

You're welcome - velbekomme, or det var så lidt. Again it depends on the context.

Could give you a long grammatical and semantical explanation but I think you are already confused:p Isn't Danish just a lovely language?

Good night - Góða nótt
Good morning - we dont have that phrase in the language
Good day - Góðan daginn, góðan dag
Good evening - góða kvöldið, gott kvöld
Yes, No - já, nei
Thank you - Takk, þakka þér
Please - That word simply does not exist in our language. The dictionary explains is at such" A polite word". The please in icelandic is pretty much the same way as Annette discribed for Danish. And since I really enjoy lechture people on grammar I'm gonna do an example like Annette did did ;) NOTE: the Icelandic people are one of the most illmannered nations in the world.
Please pass me the chocolate" = "Gjörðu svo vel(please)að(at) rétta(hand) mér (me) súkkulaðið(the chocolate)" thats mildly polite
More polite would be:
Viltu(Do you want to(yes thats right we have a 1 word for those 4 english words) vera(be) svo(so) væn/n(kind) að(to) rétta(hand) mér (me) súkkulaðið(the chocolate)
But we would never say this unsless we were at a dinner with royalty, we would just say:
Réttu(hand) mér(me) súkkulaðið(the chocolate) With out a please
2 súkkulaðistykki (2 pieces chocolate), takk(please)
You're welcome - Again another word that doesnt really exist ekkert að þakka(nothing to thank for(like if you are given a gift and you have thanked the giver)). Verði þér að góðu(may it be good for you(like after thanking for a dinner somebody has given you, after you have thanked them))

oh i feel so good now after this lesson, which I think was educating about Icelandic manners

Heh, let's face it... we are just not very polite in our countries. Actually in Danish when asking for someone to hand you something, you'd just say "giv mig chokoladen" as in "give me the chocolate". More of a command than asking.

Hehe yeah, its the same thing here. We hardly ever ask for anything like that. Infact my French teacher who's from France, was talking about it the other day, that Icelandic people arent polite when they go to resurants. We say like "I am going to have a chocolate cake" to the waitor when he hask what we want, instead of saying "Can I please have some chocolate cake?". He is so shocked over this rudeness

This is an interesting thread!

Oh, i forgot, we also use guapa to refer to pretty women (but not always,he,he):)
"Guapa" is the official term of Beautiful in "Visayan" but when we say "Maganda" that is a "Tagalog" term of Beautiful. But since the official language of the Philippines is Tagalog, so "Maganda" is always being used.

Same in our language-- words ending in "O" are for males and in "A" for females (but there are few exceptions). :D :)
