View Full Version : Nashville Tennessean: Shania "Extraordinarily Cheesy"

Claudia

From Brad Schmitt's column in the Nashville Tennessean:

Shania, Shania, Shania, Shania ... I just dunno

OK, let's talk about the Super Bowl.

Oh, forget the game. I'm talking performances.

Prerecorded or not, the Dixie Chicks delivered a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire looked simple and elegant. Most of you loved Sting and No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani. (Me, too!)

I had the biggest feedback about the lip-synching Shania Twain, her star-spangled bosom and her space-age dominatrix outfit, which most of you thought was, well, weird. And is Shania getting to be a little over the top?

Tennessean music writer Peter Cooper: ''I thought she was extraordinarily cheesy. I mean, at least refrigerate that cheese.''

Please e-mail me your thoughts about Shania's performance at brad@tennessean.com and include your full name and town.

Blah, blah, blah.

Nashville + Shania = bash, bash, bash.

Yawn:snore:

yeap, they praise the Chicks and try to bring down Shania.
Today the DC can't do wrong, they can be No.1 on Hot AC charts with a reused pop-hit, remixed and no one will say they sell-outs.

If Shania was "Extraordinarily Cheesy," it almost makes me wish I was a mouse.

IanUK: Here is another equation similar to the one you posted:

Shania's and Mutt's critics + anti-Shania brigade = Zero effect on Shania's commercial and personal appeal

I think people look for things they can pick with her at. I might not be intentional but I think its there. find something anything to say she sucks.

So....is anyone going to e-mail Brad? Now's your chance to tell someone in Nashville what you think. I did once, and he printed my e-mail, so he does read them.

Shania was the one to get all the people looking for something she did wrong.:smirk: Yes all eyes where on shania, but it was for stuff to blast her with and complain about.

Hmm...

Now this is important:

what KIND of cheese are they talking about?

:D

I think I'm going to ask what Brad's favorite cheese is! ;)

I sent him an email. I had to write it quicky and therefore was not able to say as much as I wanted, but it gets the main points across.

Here is what I said:

"I absolutely loved Shania's Superbowl performance! She sounded great (yes, I knew she was lip synching), was very entertaining, and looked fantastic. Viewers could tell Shania was enjoying herself and having a lot of fun, which in turn allows the viewers to have fun.

Over the top? What was so over the top? This is the Superbowl so obviously things are going to be exciting, fun, and glitzy. At the Superbowl, Shania had the responsibility of entertaining 1,000,000,000+ people - most of which weren't really fans. I believe she did that.

Music writer Peter Cooper said she was cheesy? What was cheesy? There was nothing cheesy about it. She was great. Of course, she's Shania (the pop-country singer who is despised by most in Nashville) so he probably disliked her performance before he saw it.

What was the big deal about Shania lip synching? Yes, she has lip synched two times in a small amount of time (Superbowl and Grey Cup), but other than those, Shania rarely lip synchs and doesn't like to. But, to do so at the Superbowl is understandable. It's a huge event and there's too much room for something to go wrong; there are just too many things that are out of her control. Common practice is for most halftime entertainers to lip synch or at least sing on top of a pre-recorded track.

The Chicks lip synch to a pre-recorded version of the National Anthem and the "country" critics have nothing but marvelous things to say about them (naturally!). Of course, they could rap with P-Diddy and they would find something to compliment them on. But, Shania lip synchs and is ripped to pieces for it. Perhaps one day some of these writers can be objective and not let their personal feelings influence their articles. It would be nice to read articles in which the author's biasm isn't painfully apparent.

Anyway, in closing, let me give my opinion of Shania's Superbowl performance: SUPERB!"

LOL. They praise the Chicks yet bash Shania?

I love it when Nashville so blatantly exposes their hypocrisy for all the world to see. :)

set this one loose before leaving work:

Good Afternoon from Finland,

We had the priviledge of viewing the Super Bowl live here in Finland
- and I know for a fact (because American Football isn't that big a
deal here) that there were many tuning in just to see the half-time
show - and especially: one Shania Twain.

Yes, even up here amidst sub-zero temperatures, snow & ice, we Finns
are able to appreciate the warmth of a Shania Twain performance.

What I wonder the most is how whatever Shania's going to do next,
the US media is ready to start a mud-slinging campaign! This is
naturally started by those hard-core country fans, who just will
not forgive her being the most internationally successful female
country artist ever...

She never got the true country aficionados' blessings, therefore:

"Peter Cooper: ''I thought she was extraordinarily cheesy.
I mean, at least refrigerate that cheese.''"

Cheesy. Cheesy?!?

"I had the biggest feedback about the lip-synching Shania Twain, her
star-spangled bosom and her space-age dominatrix outfit, which most
of you thought was, well, weird. And is Shania getting to be a little
over the top?"

A little bit over the top?!?

Lip-synching is common in such events - Shania wasn't the first to
ensure a 100% energetic flawless performance, giving the spectators
their money's worth! And her outfit: Shania Twain has sold tens of
millions of albums, that gives her the right to be called a Diva,
(and Divas tend to be glamorous, I believe) and if an outfit is
designed to bring out how exceptional and beautiful it's bearer is,
why dismissively call it weird?

It's not like it was the strangest fashion statement ever...

If Shania Twain would have done a moderate performance, singing and
all, no glitter - no "space-age dominatrix outfit"... I think we still
might be having this very same conversation, just using other terms.

If Shania Twain isn't what Americans want, we in Finland would have
her over here anyday - "her star-spangled bosom and her space-age
dominatrix outfit" and all! Maybe it's a Northern thing...

Best Wishes,

FinnFreak

I think its funny that noone mined it for MIFLAW, but put studs on it and she's super mc****ty. :smirk: I really liked the outfit much better than the one for the video of MIFLAW, wish I had a tape to record it though:cry: Now i'll never see it again.
