KMBC's Lara Moritz reported that a man was thrown onto power lines following a car crash that rolled his vehicle 5 times. Miraculously, the man survived the crash with barely a scratch.
The 18-year-old victim, Joe Ray Thompson, was driving his Jeep near near Highway 40 and Woods Chapel Road. His vehicle was struck struck by another car. The Jeep rolled several times, and the removable top apparently flew off. Thompson was not wearing his seat belt.
Witnesses said Thompson was thrown 20 feet into the air and landed on the power lines, conscious the entire time.
"They said that the car rolled five times, and that I bounced off the other two power lines and landed on the neutral, and I was just hanging there," Thompson said.
Rescuers had to wait until a power crew could shut off the electricity to reach Thompson.
Thompson said that all who witnessed the crash were surprised he survived unscathed.
"My dad looked at me and told me that he loved me. He said that my face was just blue," Thompson said. "(My father) thought that I wasn't going to make it. He thought that I had a head injury and that I was going to die."
Justin Elan drove the other vehicle that was involved in the accident. He said that one of the things that caught his attention was a Bible that Thompson had in his jeep.
Thompson agreed that surviving the accident almost without a scratch was miraculous.
"God was definitely in control, and that's all I can say. There's no way that a coincidence would happen that I made it through five rolls (with) no head injury, not wearing my seatbelt, and flew onto power lines," Thompson said. "And I just happened to land on the neutral power line that had now power."
After being flown to Research Hospital via helicopter, Thompson was treated and released a few hours later.
Thompson told KMBC that after his ordeal, he's looking forward to skydiving this summer.
