Charty Chart Chat: Shania Gets Me Down

Oh Shania Twain, how I so want to like you! Just when I thought I could defend your integrity you go and pull another stunt like you did last Sunday to sell more albums. Back in November when the pride of Timmins, ON (or is that Lausanne, CH?) performed during the Canadian football championship, a.k.a. The Grey Cup, many folks complained that Ms. Twain was lip-syncing to her new hit, "I'm Gonna Getcha Good." So much so that when it came to the American football championship, a.k.a. The Super Bowl (sorry, Charlie they ain't no world championships), there was a hope to hear Shania would actually sing, just to spite her critics. I mean, c’mon, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani managed to raise her squeaky voice on both "I'm Just A Girl" and her duet with Sting on "Message In A Bottle."

Unfortunately for Shania there were a couple of clues to the canned Twain on "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" and "Up!", such as when she started to clap with her mic in hand, there was no added noise nor was the crowd's screaming at all audible, as it was during No Doubt's performance. All in all, along with that revealing cleavage and navel-exposing outfit, Ms. Twain has solidified her place as the world's most expensive lap-dancer (kudos to Steve Earle for that accurate, though sexist, observation). Best performance honours go to Sting for his stellar chops (and brilliant musical support by the No Doubt lads) on "Message In A Bottle," while a double yeeeecchh goes out to the appearance of a tired and untalented Jon Bon Jovi for his role in crowd dispersal after the game.

Oh great, now not only is my favourite female artist getting dissed but my favourite male artist! how can they find fault with BonJovi for crying out loud, they are great live. Give it time and these little comments about shania will ease up, they are getting tiresome already and they've only been going on for 4 days. Shania rules!!!

Now, let's bring some civility back to the proceedings of Charty Chart Chat and herald a new #1 during a time of much competition. This week, Moncton's finest, Elevator, climb into the number one position with their latest album, Darkness-Light. Historically Elevator (and their previous monikers, Elevator Through and Elevator To Hell) have been successful on Canadian campus charts. Their previous release, A Taste Of Complete Perspective, topped the charts at #1 in October 13, 2000 while Vague Premonition made it to #2 in May 21, 1999.

As for the rest of the Top 10, the mysterious Montreal sonic collective, Godspeed You Black! Emperor move into the #2 position with their album, Yanqui U.X.O. Last week's #1, The Sadies' Stories Often Told, falls to #3 followed by Sigur Ros' ( ) album at #4 and Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around, moving up to #5. Mr. Cash jumps over Hot Hot Heat's Make Up The Breakdown which remains at #6. Ex-Kids In The Hall member, Bruce McCulloch's Drunk Baby Project moves up four places to #11 and Badly Drawn Boy's Have You Fed The Fish? drops to #8 with The Donnas' Spend The Night at #9 and Cuff The Duke's Life Stories For Minimum Wage at #10.

The honours for highest debut of the week belong to Crooked Fingers' Red Devil Dawn at #22, while Winnipeg's Hummers sounding the warning bells only seven years after the fact with their independent release, Save The Jets, which arrives at #32. Calla's Televise debuts at #35, Flux A.D. 's Transatlanticthoughts enters at #39, Penny's The Clockforth Movement is at #44 and finally, Top 10 electronic mainstay, FC/Kahuna's Machine Says Yes arrives at #50.

They made fun of her on a late night talk show. The host was talking about her, and the sound people kept putting gaps in his words, like it was lip synching. And on my local sports radio show, they said they were going to lip synch the broadcast, in honor of the Super Bowl halftime show. One of the DJs said "No one will know." The other said, "Oh, yes they will!"
