A PARKING attendant slapped a ticket on an ambulance as paramedics helped a wheelchair-bound pensioner in her flat.

The traffic warden issued the £60 fine on the emergency vehicle as it waited for its patient on double yellow lines during the rush- hour.

The medics had been sent to the sheltered housing complex to take the woman to her regular hospital appointment.

Bosses of Edinburgh's private parking attendants, dubbed the Enforcers, last night said the fine had been a mistake.

And Capital Parking Systems have pledged to improve training.

It comes a week after it was revealed a hearse was ticketed as it waited to take a coffin to a funeral.

Private parking attendants yesterday were accused of plumbing new depths.

An Automobile Association spokesman said: "Don't they ever learn?"

The Scottish Ambulance Service described the fine as "surprising".

A spokesman said: "Our staff do an essential job of caring for patients and ensuring they get to hospitals on time."

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said: "This ticket has quite clearly been issued wrongly."

Central Parking Systems apologised and said: "Our attendant took the view that this vehicle was not an emergency one and issued a ticket."
