OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Police on Wednesday found a man's body about 40 feet up a tree, a year after it was first spotted by a passer-by who decided not to report it.
The passer-by saw the body, partly hidden by leaves, about a year ago but didn't report it because he was wanted by police.
This week, however, he returned to the area and saw that the body was still there. Police Sgt. Paul Johnson told KIRO-TV that the man called the department Tuesday night.
Investigators don't know how the body got into the tree or how long it had been there.
"Right now we just don't know a whole lot," Thurston County Deputy Coroner Terry Harper told The Associated Press on Wednesday evening. "We just know it was a heck of a time getting him down."
One detective is a tree trimmer in his spare time, Harper said, and he used his equipment to cut away the branches and lower the body.
An autopsy was scheduled Thursday.
