Aiken Promotions are delighted to confirm the PRETENDERS, GIRLS ALOUD and DENISE O HAGAN will support SHANIA TWAIN when she plays Nowlan Park Kilkenny on Saturday 5 July 2003.
Shania Twain’s latest album ‘Come On Over’ has sold over 34 million copies worldwide and achieved platinum status in 32 countries. ‘Come On Over’ is the biggest selling album ever by a female artist and the 6th biggest selling album of all time.
Shania Twain has won numerous awards over the years. In 1999 alone she won a Grammy Award for best Female Vocal Country Performance for “Man, I Feel Like A Woman!”, a Grammy Award for Best Country Song “Come on Over” and Entertainer of the Year Country Music Award. In 2000 Shania won Best Songwriter, Best Country Female Artist, People’s Choice Award for Favourite Female Music Artist and the Entertainer of the Year Award.
Shania Twain has taken some time out in the past year to concentrate on her new album. “We used musical influences from all over the world. We used Indian musicians recorded directly in Mumbai, India, some of the American musicians were recorded in the Caribbean, a 40 piece orchestra recorded in Ireland, other musicians in Italy and we literally hopped from city to city song-writing including Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Provence and The Grenadine Islands”.
The Pretenders make a most welcome return with their new studio album ‘Loose Screw’. From the opening chords of ‘Lie To Me’, the album unravels an impressive musical portrait of a band in their prime. ‘Loose Screw’ features all the hallmarks of what we’ve grown to love about this band since their 1980 self-titled debut charmed the world. The album features 12 new songs mostly written by Chrissie Hynde and long time guitarist Adam Seymour. It also features an addictive cover of ‘Walk Like A Panther’; a 1998 UK hit by DJ collective All Seeing Eye and co-written by Jarvis Cocker.
Last September The Pretenders supported the Rolling Stones in the US. “Those shows were beyond our wildest expectations of what a tour could be like,” Chrissie enthuses. “Mick Jagger became my hero and of course I’ve always worshipped at the alter of Keith Richards.” The band has just returned from an acclaimed two-month American tour. ‘Loose Screw’ is their 8th studio album and their first since the 1999 release ‘Viva El Amour’. Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders are delighted to be coming to Kilkenny on 5th July.
In the space of just three months Girls Aloud Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts have raised the stakes in the chart scene. They’ve dared to suggest that songs needn’t be dull, that singers should never be dumb, and that tilting one’s microphone stand at a 45-degree angle is the sexiest dance move of them all. ‘Sound Of The Underground’ was a state-of-the-art pop classic by the definitive modern pop group, and what’s more, it was no one-off. For Girls Aloud, 2003 has already been a blast. After storming to Christmas Number One, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ was the best-selling single in the UK for a month, and was still in the Top 20 three months later. It is also in the Top 10 in the Netherlands, playlisted on all France’s major radio networks, and in the Top 10 Belgian airplay charts.
Second single ‘No Good Advice’ is a response to critics and meddling do-gooders, and is guaranteed to turn the Girls’ story several notches louder. With some of the most forthright pop lyrics of recent times, the song is another collaboration with producer and songwriter Brian Higgins. By the end of the year with a couple more singles under their belts the girls will also be taking to the road on their own headlining tour. But that’s all to come. Right now, the girls are buzzing with the excitement of ‘No Good Advice’, and can’t wait to get out there and stand tall as a band in their own right. “It feels just like we’ve had the stabilisers taken off,” Nadine smiles. “And it feels great.”
On July 5th 2003 Denise Hagan’s wish will come true when she performs on the same stage as Shania Twain. Twenty seven year old singer/songwriter Denise Hagan has been invited by Aiken Promotions to support American superstar Shania Twain and with the controlled confidence of knowing that her time has come – she is ready to rock’n’roll. Denise and her gleaming sunburst guitar are set to take the stage with some feel-good rhythms and tasty new melodies fresh from her new forthcoming album ‘The Tangerine Moon’. Denise was playing guitar in her home county of Armagh when her friends were still playing with their first doll. Her family life was immersed in music, with music teacher Mum a swinging sixties chick and her Dad a showband man rocking and rolling around the kitchen to the delight of their four children. Her early musical interests lay mainly in the work of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Eddie Reader.
During her formative years her interest went stateside, admiring the playing of Shawn Colvin, the melodies of Mary Chapin Carpenter and the vivid lyrics of Nancy Griffith. However, it was a rendition of ‘The Streets of London” by Ralph McTell that finally inspired her to start writing and committing her own ideas to tape. This resulted in the dreamy ballad ‘The Tangerine Moon’ (a song that is to front her new album a mere 10 years later). And so began an outlet for her creativity as she observed the events of everyday life and wrote songs that she describes as ‘heart’ music. Her aim is to connect with her audience – as the songs unfold they resonate with the listener and open up a perspective we can all share. The poignancy of her lyrics make you feel as though you have met a true kindred spirit.
Tickets for Shania Twain and special guests Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders, Girls Aloud and Denise Hagan’s spectacular live concert at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny are on sale now and available from Ticketmaster and usual outlets. Tickets are priced at E59.50 & E65 euro.
