NEW YORK, Jul 21, 2003 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
You can quote them in an instant. You know them by name. Something they said or did not only changed your life, but affected American life as a whole. Who are they? They are VH1's '200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons.'They are the folks that have significantly inspired and impacted American society and VH1 is celebrating them in an all-star special event.

Too large to be a '100 Greatest'special, for the first-time ever, VH1 will expand its reach and will recognize 200 of America's most outstanding and outrageous personalities with 'VH1's 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons,' premiering on Monday, July 21st and airing through Friday, July 25th from 9:00-11:00 p.m. (ET/PT) each night. Each one hour episode is illustrated by Robert Risko, and will take a fun and lighthearted look at the individuals and moments that now live immortally in American pop culture.

Along with VH1, PEOPLE magazine has published a book celebrating the '200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons.'This special collector's edition, is on newsstands now. Filled with beautiful photos and intimate reporting, PEOPLE brings you the divas, the visionaries, the sex symbols and more. From Marilyn and Michael to Elvis and Eminem, you can find them all in PEOPLE's keepsake, available through Labor Day.

What makes an 'Icon?'It's not enough to just be famous or have won a couple of awards. You have to pass one or more of the following criteria:

* Do they pass the one-name test?
* Can you dress up as them for Halloween?
* Did they blaze a trail in pop culture?
* Did they create a signature character in pop culture?
* Can you quote them (or their character) in 10 seconds or less? (Do they have a catch phrase?)
* Did society imitate their sense of fashion? Hairstyle?
* Did 'SNL'create a sketch satirizing them?
* Did someone write a song about them?
* Was or is there merchandising/paraphernalia that bears their image?
* Can they be connected to Kevin Bacon?

It is interesting to note there are four country music stars on the list:

88. Johnny Cash
98. Shania Twain
150. Garth Brooks
189. Dolly Parton

What is the one common charactistic of all four?

They all enjoyed tremendous crossover success with their music.

I think Elvis should be number one. . . .there are so many Elvis impersonators! IMO, Elvis is the biggest legend ever! I went through 'Graceland' a few weeks ago and it was awesome!

I don't agree with J Lo. being that high on the list either. Sure, she can be on the list. . . but number 15?

The list is insane in its ranking system.

Shania above Dolly?? Freud?? E.T.?? Not just Shania above them, but the rest of the list as well! I mean who had a bigger psychological influence than Freud the past 100 years?? Nobody!
Who does not love E.T.??

J-lo above all the other 195 other people??

Jay Leno and Letterman so far apart on the list?? Letterman is just as big as Leno..

JFK jr. higher than Woody Allen, Babe Ruth, and Cindy Crawford??

And John-John is above his father who was one of the most admired presidents of all time because???? He looked good in spandex??

Then they include J-lo on the list but they forget to add Selena?? The person who made it possible for J-lo to actually have her one single decent acting role?? Go to any latin community and Selena is still the name they mention, not big butt.

This list is just laughable

Well what did you expect? They created a list based on some debatable reasons, and more than this, they did it based on a temporary trend, at one moment in time, not over a longer span of many years. Since when someone is judged as being a cultural icon if his influence comes and goes faster than a season? They just wanted a new reason to create a new list to boost sales, and they did that. A serious study on this particular subject should take months if not years to complete, and even then it would be debatable.

That being said, IMO if a serious list should be made, Shania should be much lower in there. Can't say if she should be in the top 200, I don't know that since I don't know your society first hand. But it's interesting she's up there, this means to me her relative influence, or however should be called based on this top, is still recognized, which is interesting.

How come you said nothing about the absence of Fredy Mercury and/or Queen from that top? Aren't they that influent over there?

What did I expect? I expected this. My rant is based on amusement and the love of writing, not on the notion that my expectations and desires were not fulfilled. I think you confuse the level of my "outrage" as actual caring and questioning in a serious manner. An icon list is what it is. I don't have many qualms with who they included, give or take a few (dozen) but my annoyance lies in the numerical placement of said list.

I know that many people feel that Shania is = to world salvation, but I tend to think that people like Freud and such had a much bigger influence on society at large than she has...and an icon is somebody who wields much power, imaginary or real. And a lot of the people above her wield much more power and have influenced society much more than her. I think that she is too neutral to even stir up society to the level of thinking of her as an icon. Also, I would only place her in icon status (if I had to) in the country demain, because I think she really changed the system. But not in the pop world where she has not contributed that much.

I just don't think of Shania, or J-lo and some others as icons. Sorry, I just don't seem that in that way. I think that are popular and very influential, but not legendary, at least not in the way that will be remembered in 20 years from now.

I am sorry that I did not mention Mr. Mercury or Queen lol I did not know that I should include all the ones that I feel were left off the list. They (he) were/are huge in the states. So yes, I agree that the top should include him in the very least.

There are many others that I could mention, but I don't think that their mission was to delve too far back in history...which is idiotic because time has (should not) anything to do with if a person is seen as an icon.

Mozart, Anne Franks, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln...think of the sayings that we have that can be contributed to the last two that we still use...not the forget the monetary aspect of Washington..what screams cultural icon more than having your face plastered on money? You are the culture

And if we go by the standard definition: an object of uncritical devotion

Then the likes of Saddam, Hitler, Stalin, etc should be included. They had masses of people who were uncritically devoted to them. They were/are cultural icons.

So yes, I could go on, but entertainment is entertainment...which means that it will be watered down for the masses to gobble up. So in their world a girl singing about having someone hitting her one moe time has more of an influence than the father of psychoanalytic theory; which encompasses all that we do.

I rant therfore I am.

The moment I saw the title of the thread I thought this whole thing is a joke, not to be taken seriously. However, considering the selection criteria, I am (still) pleasantly surprised that Shania is so high up there. Given they constructed the top to give the public what the want to read. I told you about Queen since I know you are a fan of them, that’s all. But based on those criteria, it’s stupid they didn’t make their top, not to mention if the top was a serious one.

The big problem, if you try and make a study about this issue, is taking into consideration the personalities that have/had an influence in a more unconscious level. You don’t have to be aware of someone’s influence, and think about it every step of the way, at mass level. The personalities in the past such as Hitler, have had an active influence back then when they lived, so the society and culture of today is a direct resultant of both the influence they had in the past with the results showing today, as well as the perception of those personalities in our days. You learn about Hitler in school, when your entire system of thinking is formed, so the influence is huge, but are you fully aware of that influence every step of the way? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a cultural influence.

One guy who I think should make a top like this today is Usama bin Laden(I remember the Time magazine debate when they wanted to make him personality of the year). About the non-critical devotion principle, frankly I don’t think it should apply. Influences can be positive and negative, a person’s actions trigger reactions. So if those reactions are triggered at mass level, you can say that person is a cultural influence. It’s pretty hard for me to distinguish between the idea of cultural influence and the influence upon society itself, it’s hard to draw the line as they go hand in hand.

In short, if someone wants to make a serious study about this issue, under more elaborate criteria, it would be interesting to read it.

I rant therfore I am.

You should use that as a signature.:D

I was surprised, but pleased that Shania was so high on the list. However, after thinking about it for a while she did create the best selling record by any female artist. That in its self does give her the right to be on the list. Everyone may not be able to quote her, but they can quote her songs. ;)
