Is IB really so bad?

I just came from the corrsonline MB and I am a little aggrivated. There was a topic posted by someone who isn't pleased with the direction that the Corrs have taken musically. They think that IB isn't up to snuff & that the Corrs are selling out just to hit it big here (which seems to be the worst thing that could happen in their opine). There were a few pot shots taken at Mutt and even Shania which really burned me up. I am so tired of going there and reading about how the Corrs are sell outs and that it's all the fault of evil Americans like myself. It's truly unfair to both the band and their American fans. I think that IB is an excellent album. In fact I think that all their albums are excellent, but for different reasons. It's stupid for people to think that every album should be like FNF or TOC. The Corrs like change and experimentation which is the recipe for success & longevity. So what if they worked with Mutt Lange? The music is still excellent! I understand that everyone is entitled to their opine, but some of these people take it to the extreme. David, the site's creator said that he thought that the Corrs have degraded themselves by making an album like IB. That is something that I couldn't fathom. Songs like "Hurt Before" & "Give Me A Reason" are degrading? What gives? I'm sorry for venting everybody, but I had to do it somewhere lol. Please, someone tell me that I am not alone in feeling what I feel. IB is a great album and I think that it will help the Corrs receive the acclaim that they richly deserve http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif

I agree with you. With every album comes a slightly different sound. now in this case it was a rather different sound, but it still had a great irish touch to it. I know what you mean though, look at shania when she went more pop, people got mad at her. The people who think the corrs are degrading are just weird. They are just people who want the same thing, and are sick of change. Now maybe this new sound isn't for you, and that is okay. But come on, why are you giving them so much grief. I love IB, I love Unplugged, I love IB special EDITION, I love TOC, I love FNF. Not because they all sound the same, its just that they are the only group that knows how to sing anymore, and can sing GOOD music. So heather, your NOT alone. I agree with you entirely

Yeah, I agree too! I like all of their albums. They are all very good.
I go to that messageboard often, altough Im not a member. Just because I like this, and Shanias forum much better. People are nicer here!

I don't think that IB is a bad album, it is really great! And I wouldn't say that they degraded themselves with making such an album. But: it IS different! I don't say they shouldn't change at all. I just think that they shouldn't have released "Breathless" and "Irresistible" as the first two singles. I will probably get hate letters for this, but those are exactly the two songs on this album that attract the "wrong" fans... And I don't mean young fans, it's wonderful that so many young people know them now, but they have been compared with the Vengaboys and that's not right.
I think that wouldn't have happened if they released GMAR or NMC first.
But maybe I'm wrong and just trying too hard to find an answer to some things.

(actually there ARE songs on TOC and FnF which could also be on IB so it can't be bad!!!)

But, I understand that people like FNF and TOC, but they can't expect the Corrs to continue to make albums identical to these. I went last night and read some of the threads on the Corrs message board. I thought about this before, but yesterday it seemed so obvious. If they would have some forum awards, the only award that would be really contested would be “the fan with the biggest ego”. Some of those people have a real problem in controlling themselves or should I say, how to look more out of control. That is probably because of the very rules imposed by their moderators. If you don’t set some rules you end up doing what some of them do. So actually this is a compliment for our moderators. Keep up the good work. I would start a more detailed commentary, but out of respect for Manu and other people who go there on regular basis I will stop now.

Corrs=Vengaboys? That’s a first one, but I must say I somehow understand how some people might have come to that conclusion. Anyway I agree with Manu on the singles release subject. If let’s say that Breathless was a positive first single choice, I don’t think Irresistible was a good second pic. As an example, as far as know it didn’t do very well on the European charts. I don’t know about America though.
As for the Vengaboys, I think they summoned the spirits of all the greatest poets in world history, put them together in a 5 minute computer class and then started writing the lyrics for their latest single (I don’t know how to spell the title, it’s the one about computers). I was so moved by those lyrics when I heard them, I thought you have to be a perfect genius to write something like this:

The doctor checked my harddrive
A virus in my archive
My disk was not protected
And now I am infected.

in america the corrs don't do well on the national charts at all. They do goo like on the adult TOP 40, which is a small chart but that's it. Give Me A Reason is the best song on the album, besides hurt before, so i think that should have been released not Breathless. I understand what you mean though Manu, breathless has lyrics that sound like Britney, and Christina. And compared to the other songs they have released, those really don't match up. These are the singles i think they should have released.

3. Give It All Up
4. Hurt Before
5. Breathless

Sorry, I still have something else to add. It isn't just the fact that some of the people on that board dislike IB, it's their attitude concerning American fans. The way they carry on, you would think that Americans held the Corrs up in their studio and forced them to record IB at gunpoint! Yeah, we evil Americans are responsible for their latest musical evolution. It's our fault that there are no blasted tin whistles or an Erin Shore Part 2 on IB. Don't get me wrong, I am an Irish-American Girl and I love the music, but these people need to get over it. IB has been a big hit on other countries. So if we "Yanks" are evil and tasteless then so are the Brits and all the other Europeans "dumb" enough to appreciate IB. Whew! I agree with you on GMAR and Hurt Before. But Rain and Give it all up are my least favorite songs on this album. I don't know why but I often seem to have a hard time liking songs that Sharon wrote. The great exceptions are of corrs Radio UNPLUGGED VERSION (important!!!) and So Young. Those two are great. But in general I prefer Andrea's and Caroline's lyrics. Andrea's are often mysterious and kind of Stevie Nicks-like, and I love this! I mean, Hurt Before has some of the most powerful lyrics I've ever read! My top 6 for single-releases off IB are:

1. GMAR
2. NMC (don't know if they'll release it though because of the meaning of the song)
3. SFS
4. Hurt Before
5. ATLITW
6. Breathless

You have a good point here, it wasn't the Americans who got IB to No. 1! But in most European countries it was very successfull. IB was No. 1 for 8 or 9 weeks here in Switzerland. Wow, we are the dumb ones, not the Americans... *lol* But the fact is that there were more European than American fans before IB, that's not against you Americans, I know most of you didn't even have a chance to get to know them, but there were millions of fans here and of course all of them also bought IB, if they like it or not!

Those people on the COL board who blame the Americans are simply stupid because as you said, The Corrs made this album, not the Americans. And it is a great album. And if people don't like it, well no one said it has to be their favorite album just because it's the latest one. There are three others to choose from and there's one for everyone.

Yeah i know what you mean Heather, us americans are not really looked upon highly in the Overall fan base. But i can say i've bought all their cd's. And i tell everyone possible about them. I think ive been responsible for 15-20 people buying IB. Just because the corrs decide to release something more american'y doesn't mean that we should be blamed for it. I like both types of music the do, it doesn't matter to me. But i must confess, the lyrics to Breathless were what drew me to the corrs. I KNOW that means i'm the wrong kind of fan, but seriously when i first heard their cd, i was a little disappointed, cause i was expecting an album full of stuff like Breathless, Irrestable. But then, i really listened to it, and i simply fell in love with them. Maybe i fell in love with them for the wrong reason, but i really don't think it matters. At least im a fan. Since then, like i said earlier ive bought all their cd's. I wasn't the least bit dissapointed with any release. The corrs' american tactics worked on me, giving me a little of what i was used too, that me starting to like all of it. I will always be a corrs fan, no matter if they do a song like breathless again, or not. (don't send me hate mail for this, please!!)

I saw breathless (the vid) for the first time on VH1, before that they had them talking for a couple of seconds about why the like music, or something like that, i felt so sorry for them being in that desert i mean, They looked like they were about to die. But, i really didn't get what she was trying to do, i mean, andrea was saying " leave me breathless" to this 60 year old motorcycle driver. I still liked it though! The corrs have a real talent when it comes to videos'. I haven't seen Irrestable yet, but ill be looking for it.

I haven't seen "Irresistible" either. I can't wait until they finally start carrying it on VH1. I was so excited when MTV showed the Corrs TOC special.
