GOING UNDER

Local News - A massive sinkhole near downtown Timmins caused devastation and chaos Monday morning.

As many as 12 cars, trucks and other pieces of equipment, including a 40-foot trailer, were swallowed in the sinkhole at the corner of Railway Street and Knox Avenue. As if all this wasn’t enough, the nearby area was hit by a flash flood.

Fortunately, no one was killed, or injured.

But hundreds of people were stunned by the spectacle on property used by Raymond’s Garage.

Tony Raymond, owner of Raymond’s, said all hell broke loose at about 8 a.m.

“I saw it happening and I just yelled to everybody to get out,” Raymond said.

Officials report the sinkhole took place above an old underground working of the Moneta mine, which ceased operation in the 1940s.

A similar cave in took place on the same property in 1963.

Water is believed to have eroded the sand, creating large open pockets beneath the surface. The surface gave way and a sinkhole developed.

With the collapse, the pressure caused the water in the shaft to erupt like a geyser.

“The pressure lifted a cement shaft cap causing tidal waves which submerged the streets with 1˝ feet of water,” said Fire Chief Lester Cudmore.

Flooding extended from the corner of Railway and Knox southward to Moneta Avenue.

Police and fire crews were on site as well as Ministry of Northern Development and Mines personnel.

“In 1963 when this property first experienced problems with sink holes, three buses were lost,” Cudmore said. “In my understanding they are still there.”

However, the incident was not unexpected said Francis Yungwirth, CEO of Moneta Mines.

“It sort of comes with the territory, it’s not 100 per cent surprising when you have underground mines and empty spaces,” Yungwirth said.

The vehicles that collapsed into the hole were all owned by Raymond’s. None of the vehicles belong to customers, said Mike Raymond, brother of the owner of the business.

“There are more than 10 pieces of equipment at the bottom of the sink hole right now including a 40-foot trailer, two wreckers, two trucks and two half-tons,” Cudmore said at the scene Monday afternoon.

All the vehicles were removed from the hole by 7 p.m.

Hundreds of spectators gathered through the day to watch developments. Police barricaded the area. Construction workers erected six-foot fences to secure the property to protect the public from injury.

“The property has been deemed as mine workings and unsafe for the public and business,” Cudmore said.

The owner is taking things in stride.

“Right now I am closed for business as I have been evicted but I will be getting back into business,” Raymond said.

However, Raymond said he does not have another place to relocate to and does not know what he will do.

In January of this year Raymond said Moneta mines conducted a regular inspection of his area.

In light of the delicate area, “an inspection is done in the spring and fall sometimes it’s done with Rob Ferguson (a sink hole expert) from Ministry of Northern Development and Mines,” Yungwirth said.

Yeah, but the real question is, would you play it where it was, or take the penalty? :p

Rule 23 in golf covers moveable and immoveable obstructions. Being that this one is immoveable, I would say that you take a drop, not nearer the green. No penalty. Just play on.

To answer the question by Just a Fan... the city is full of mine workings. Most areas east of the STC have completely been mined. Just imagine a large block of swiss cheese with the holes running through it. That`s what it looks like underground.

Most of the workings don`t affect daily life, but every once in a while, you get an even such as this that really reminds us how mining can affect our day to day life.

That creates a rather vivid picture in my mind. I can imagine that one would get rather nervous for a while after this sort of event, knowing that there are a lot more tunnels under there!

wow is the stc under threat from anything like this or was the site fully surveyed before construction??

(i work for the planning service here in northern ireland so this is an interesting phenomenon for me... not too many mine shafts round here!)

glad to hear no-one was injured..

The STC is very safe. The entire area was surveyed and overlayed with the mining plans to ensure no cave-ins would happen. Do not fear.

An entire Canadian town may be in danger of being gobbled up by the earth.

As many as 12 cars, trucks and other vehicles, including a 40-foot trailer, disappeared into a huge sinkhole near the downtown of Timmins, Ont., reports the Timmins Daily Press.

The hole opened up about 8 a.m. Monday morning, Tony Raymond, owner of Raymond's Garage (search), told the newspaper.

"I saw it happening and I just yelled to everybody to get out," Raymond said.

Raymond's Garage is on land lying over an old mine that ceased operation in the 1940s, the paper said. As the ground collapsed, the resulting pressure caused water in the mineshaft below to spurt upwards.

"The pressure lifted a cement shaft cap, causing tidal waves which submerged the streets with 1˝ feet of water," said Fire Chief Lester Cudmore.

"There are more than 10 pieces of equipment at the bottom of the sinkhole right now," he added, "including a 40-foot trailer, two wreckers, two trucks and two half-tons."

All the vehicles, which were owned by Raymond's Garage, were pulled out by 7 p.m. Monday.

An earlier cave-in took place in 1963, during which three buses plunged into the ground.

"In my understanding they are still there," said Fire Chief Lester Cudmore.

No one was hurt, but both Raymond's Garage and an overhead-door business next door have been evicted from their current locations because of safety concerns.

Timmins, a city of about 45,000 about 100 miles north of Lake Huron, is best-known for being the hometown of country singer Shania Twain (search).

I guess that was a hole in one then Ren?

I don't know much about golf and until a few weeks ago had never played, but this is a true story folk, so enjoy.

HMS Endurance was with us at the most southerly point of my travels at LAT 77.38 deg we were way south of Sanity and challenged them to a game of Golf on the Fast Ice.

TOM: Hi Wendy (PTO HMS Endurance and very pretty!) I am not very good at this but I will give it a go. (I wack the brightly orange coloured golf ball and it goes off in the wrong direction. It hits a Lepoard Seal on the head... Ooops...

The Lepoard Seal EATS my Golf ball.

WENDY: That's a lie then, you will have to move the Seal and play from that big hollow on the Sea ICE.

TOM: No, Wendy that is a drop, the Seal has eaten the Golf Ball.

WENDY: Seals don't eat Golf Balls.

TOM: Well this one does.

Wendy walks up to the giant 3 metre long flesh eating Lepoard Seal and prods it with her driver trying to get it to move.

The Lepoard Seal, still hurting from my golf ball hitting it on its head, snarles at Wendy and trys to eat her driver, snapping its shaft in two.

WENDY: (retreating quickly away from the following seal) I guess that is a drop then.

TOM: Do you want to borrow my driver for your next shot?

Well, if you can make it to the fan con this year, Tom, you could make the golf tournament interesting if there are any bears around!
