Local News - A downtown building gutted by fire over the weekend will face the wrecker's ball.

A representative for Moffatt Developments, owner of the building that accommodated The Good Samaritan Inn's Thrift Store, said the company plans to demolish the structure.

The blue steel building at 24 Birch St. S. was the scene of a major fire Saturday evening.

The building has been determined by the insurance adjuster to be a total write off and will have to be demolished, the representative said. The cost to rebuild it would be more than $300,000 and due to it's hazardous condition it is better to knock it down.

As for plans of reopening the thrift store, Rose Nadeau, president and founder of The Good Samaritan Inn, said everything is up in the air.

I am waiting for an opportunity to come along and relying on the news of what happened to get to people and hopefully someone will want to rent to us, Nadeau said.

In the meantime, I will be knocking on doors if I happen to see a suitable place.

As well, I am challenging real estate agents in town to talk to any clients who have an empty building that could be used for a good cause, instead of just deteriorating, Nadeau said.

The fire destroyed all the contents inside including furniture, kitchen utensils, clothing, dishes, etc.

Nadeau said she doesn't know the exact dollar value of the contents.

It's difficult to put an amount on second-hand items but, the store would generate around $1,500 a month in revenue.

Nadeau said the items were not insured.

However, she said The Good Samaritan Inn has a number of items in storage that could fill another store.

Nadeau said she is hoping for the kindness of the community and its most famous native, Shania Twain, to help the Good Samaritan Inn.

Since Timmins is Shania Twain's hometown, I hope she will find out about our loss and come to the rescue.

The fire on Birch Street South was the second major downtown fire in just over two months.

The historic Ostrosser Building was destroyed by fire on Feb. 4.

---------- End of Relay------------

The Maple Leaf Hotel could do with some temporary tenents just to keep it from being demolished as well.

*sigh* Any time some business or landmark in Timmins is in trouble someone says Shania should help. If Shania ever does help out financially, the list of beggars at her door will be even longer. As it is, she approved the construction of the Centre set up in her name at what was, I suspect, some embarrassment to herself. I think people should leave Shania alone.

I thought that post would get you all going :)

Come on now, Charity begins at Home after all.

Yes Shania is uncomfortable with a 'Shania Twain Centre' dedicated to her and has said so in public, but it makes us so happy she wisely gave the go ahead.

And yes, if she gave to that Charity she would have to give to all the rest, but guess what Guys.... I bet she gives anyway on the condition that it not be made public.

That would be so typical of the Eilleen Twain we all know and love. Don't worry about the Maple Leaf, I may help with the support of a local business person form a partnership to rescue that one, that is one of the reasons I am staying in Timmins for two weeks in May to look into the financial aspects of setting up home there.

Yup - Well said Roger.

I'm sure Shania will never forget her roots in Timmins, but she is in a no win situation - if she does nothing, then she will be called all kinds of names, and if she does help out, then as you say everyone in a spot of bother will bombard her with begging letters and expect her to help them too.

What Shania chooses to do in her private life, and what she does with her money is her own business. Leave the lassie alone! :smirk:

well, i dont like the way that they are sort of relying on Shania to "come to the rescue"!
just because Shania has enough money to swim in it doesnt mean that she has to keep giving it all away, Shania DID earn every penny after all! :)

although it is all Shania's decision of course, if she wants to help then fair enough but if she doesnt help then just get over it, its only a damn building!

I laughed my A*** of at that one, Hmmn let see

Shania's total fortune, gone sorting out the Potholes and Sinkholes

Mutt's fortune, gone reducing local taxes to a level locals can actually afford, bringing the railway back to Timmins, building a new multi lane Autoban from Toronto to Timmins, building the new Library and sorting out all the empty buildings in downtown Timmins.

Tom hyper in Shanialand (again - sorry) (second childhood and all that)

Well, I don't know. I think they should have tried a different way. They should have asked her in privat first before publishing it in a newspaper. I don't think that's the right way. It's sets way too much pressure on Shania!!!
Shania donates a lot of money to all different kinds of organisations. She gives her clothes and awards away to charity so I don't think anyone should blame her if she decides not to give any money here.

Just ask yourself would you go and give 300.000 dollar to your hometown to save a burn down building? I mean, honestly, if it was something really special and there was absolutely no other way - probably. But hey, it's just a building. There are other places where money is much more needed!
