View Full Version : Our Trees
Now that the snow has finally melted in Timmins, has anyone checked to see if the trees we planted last August at the convention are still alive?

Posted the same thing on the Boards Roger, no reply as yet, so if you can wait until the middle of May I will go round myself and check on them and post a photo here...
OK? Bet they all got squished or eaten or died of shock!!
I would imagine the survival rate is pretty low. Here is my "tree". LOL

Oh What a beauty Roger! My one was a mutant, too tall to stand up on it's own, by the time I had finished with my potapoo or what ever the heck you called the tool of tree torture we all were forced to learn to use.
But I will HUNT your sapling out and photograph it close up and personal first chance I get. Myself and Bob should be in Timmins from around the 19th of May or so, give me a few days to settle and I will be going to the STC and doing a full tree survey for us all.
The 1st Worldwide Fan convention trees must survive, even if a little bit of cheating may have to be done behind the scenes ;)

Hi Tom,
Yeah that Roger gets around pretty good with his digital camera. He had lots of practice with the SLRs before that.
So we'll have to add this little quest to our Timmins adventure next week. When you're here in a few days, I can take you to a nearby golf driving range and show you a few basic tips. But on the golf course in Timmins, at the hole nearest the STC, I'll let you cut loose with a full swing. The errant shot will bound right in there among the trees we planted last year, and we can check them out for annual growth rings.
I'm not sure what to expect from Roger's tree though. Looks like he was feeding it an aluminum strip. Maybe he's planning for termite-resistant siding on his house.

Ah the Aluminum Strip is so we can track the trees from Space. The Shania Twain Centre is pretty hi tech as you know. It also makes the Beavers think twice, just in case they are not sure what make of tree they have there.
The Aluminum strips of course were re cycled from the empty beer cans I left them after my last May Run weekend.
I have to return now as they have run out. ;)
Saw Tracy both nights in London. Asked her about the trees. She says it is too early yet to tell whose trees will survive. Their snow has only just gone. The key thing is to look for new growth in a few weeks.
Got some photos of Tracy and her display. I'll post these here and at the fan club for promotional purposes (Tracy approved).

Well, if my tree takes after me at all, there's no way it survived a Canadian winter.

I know what you mean, except in reverse. Too much heat and humidity has a similar effect on me.
Tom and I can check on your tree when we're there in a few days if you give us it's location. I planted mine nearest one end, to help remember how to find it. In fact, this would be a fun little task for me. I could go right down the rows, checking whose trees are still going strong, check them off on my clipboard, then post the results on the messageboard(s) for those who made the trip to the convention last year; including it's tree planting experiment under the expert, witty and patient guidance of Mark Juron from Millson Forestry.
I helped my dad plant a few thousand seedlings of exactly the same name of pine out in the wild pasture of our northern farm when I was a kid. The first few years, it didn't seem to have any result, because the grass and weeds were taller than the seedlings. In about the 5th year, we could see them; and it looked like there were quite a few gaps, with maybe 20-30% not surviving. For the next dozen years, we watched them go thru their early stages. By the time we sold the farm in 1970, they were approaching 15 feet tall. Now when I drive by, it's like the Black Forest. They're all grown together, no gaps, seem about 25-30 feet tall, the lower branches have all died because of lack of sun, and the cow herd goes under them for shade - in the summertime.

That's great Bob! If you are looking at the area where we planted the trees and facing roughly in the direction of the Centre, my tree is in the upper left corner as I recall.

Ah, that puts you right in front of me. I guess Roger isn't always right after all, sometimes he's left. :)
P.S. I sent an email to Millson to alert them to a possible tree inventory by the Giant Scot.

Actually, I am way to the left of a lot of people at the other board! :funny:
Roger
Drum roll please.....
I thank you...
EVERYONE's Trees are ALIVE AND WELL! Bob and I checked them out last night. All have strong green tips and show good shoots. Some were still impacted by the weight of the snow on the ground so we carefully lifted the saplings clear and sometime over the next week will take photos for you all to share.

Hmmm... ALL the trees survived? That sounds suspicious.... I can't imagine why, considering the source...

Well, I hate to admit it, but my vision isn't as good as it used to be. Roger, I couldn't find your tree near mine in our quick check before we had to get to the next stop in my brief trip up here. Most of the other 2003 convention goers' trees were there. I might not have been looking in the right place, however.
On the other hand, Tom's distance vision is so good he's known as the 'bald eagle.' And he might have been telling me he saw bgaill's Canadian Air Force pilot flying overhead.

That's okay Bob. I'll find it when I'm there in August.

Yes I saw your Tree, will take photo's later this week Beth. All have strong green tips and apart from lying down on the ground where the weight of Snow had pushed them they were just fine.
The Centre has the area fenced off to prevent the lawnmower getting in there and I understand from Tracy we are the ONLY group who will be alowed to plant trees in front of the Shania Twain Centre.
You have to come back every 5 years though to re-tag your tree though!
I hope you make the convention again this year as something VERY very special is being lined up for the 1st day. I am sworn to silence but please all try and come. You will not regret it I promise.

Thanks for checking up on our trees! And I hope that plane you saw with my pilot in it was in a nosedive.

I am sorry Roger, but this years opening and closing events at the Fan Convention 2004 will simply blow away the fans who attend, but due to the slight possibility that Tracy can not pull off the events due to something not planned for it is best that they remain off the net until nearer the Convention when they will be announced to the World.
I have a great announcement however which Tracy has allowed me to post and I will do so on a new thread here.
I am posting this from the Shania Twain Centre in the back store room surrounded by priceless Shania display items. It is a local holiday here but the centre is open as normal as Tracy is putting the finishing touches to display items for the start of the busy summer season.
Over 14000 fans from all over the world visit the STC every year and there are a party of french speaking people getting shown round the centre with a french speaking member of staff just now.
The weather is dull and overcast, but the first nice day we get I will take a photo, close up of one or two of 'our trees' to assure you that they are all alive and well.
I have been invited to help Tracy with the displays, but I have a touch of a local flu thing going the rounds here and not sure I would be very good as a helper.
More soon. Tom in Timmins for now
