Is anyone else besides me making the trek to Timmins alone?

That's what's holding me back from going, the idea of travelling alone for 10 hours is quite a scary thought. How are you getting there?

Just be careful. Leave early in the morning so you would dodge midnight driving.

I'll be flying for sure. I couldn't stand driving for that long. Plus it'd be a bit quicker too. Probably 4-5 hours including layovers.
I'm flying from London, England. Journey's gonna be about 12 hours long.....
Anyone else flying from the UK ?

I'm suprised at how many people from Europe are coming, which is not to say that I wouldn't travel abroad for Shania, because I would. It's just that I can take flying for so long then I tend to get a little antsy. Well, I wish everyone traveling abroad for the Convention a safe journey! :)

Just plug in your Shania CD, crank it up, and the hours will fly by. Just keep remindind yourself that you'll soon be with a bunch of great Shania fans.

Thank you. Like Grace (who I had the pleasure of hanging out with before and after London's Hyde Park Concert July 12th last year) I am travelling from the UK. I am 1 hours drive from Aberdeen where I catch the train to Glasgow, Glasgow to Toronto Pearson, then by Air to Timmins. Total journey time from the Rural North East of Scotland. 13 hours plus delays at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Toronto. Normally takes me about 21 hours on average.
Worth every second, I think this year is going to be even better than last, and that was just so, so special. Once you get to Timmins you are going to be every bit as high as if you have just been to a Shania Concert!! The tour round the Centre is oh so special for those who have never been.
Shania will be really moved when she see's it next year for the very first time. Looking forward to meeting those CRAZY Finns this year ;) and I am so pleased you are all taking the plunge and like me travelling alone.

I love driving that long just as I don't get speeding tickets...lol. I wish I was going cause I know I would only stop for gas and bathroom breaks that's it. I enjoy driving that long.

That's a great idea and makes me feel even better about having invested in a portable CD player that actually lasts for more than one song without dying.

Great idea Ren !
I'm still waiting for those snazzy Mini iPods to arrive so that I can download all Shania songs plus remixes onto it :D
I hope I make it in August for that Game of Golf Ren + Will owes me a fishing trip! ;)

Looking forward to meeting those CRAZY Finns this year ;)
höh..? ...it's the way we are - and we don't consider ourselves crazy at all..! :funny:
 ...110% committed perhaps..? :dunno: heh, maybe "crazy" IS the word that describes us the best..! :p
...looking forward to meeting a Scotsman too..! :)
...last week I got to meet a prof. Bauer from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand... he flew 26 hrs to Finland, stayed for a day & then flew back..! (...maybe one could call *him* a "nutty" professor..!) :funny:

Everyone be very careful and have fun. :).

If Fans from Europe can make there way across the Atlantic, I am sure a one days drive north could happen. You will not regret it after, and you will know why Shania is so special when you meet the people who shaped her life all those years ago.
It is like a Shania Concert, you get a huge Buzz, but this one lasts for Weeks after not days and leaves you wanting to come back every year to Timmins. As individuals Shania's fans are very special, put a bunch of us together in her home town and MAN we are AWESOME!
Are you ready Timmins? I said ARE YOU READY TIMMMINS! :)
PS: on the Safety issue, you will be in good company the whole time during the schedualed convention events, but should you choose to arrive early or leave late (recommended) the Downtown Core of Timmins is well lit and safe, the downtown police station being in the heart of the City. Taverns are open until two AM, the streets are pretty quite then except on a Sat night when there are a lot of mostly young people going home after a night out.
Most of the major accomodations are within 20 min walk of the downtown core, the Days Inn being the most central. The cheapest accomodation is Bed and Breakfast or Taverns. Tavern or Inn hotels are normally rented by the Week from $70 to $80 Canadian per WEEK, for that price however you will not be on suite. Tavern accomodation such as the Timmins Hotel, Victory Tavern or the Windsor is the most central of all, but perhaps more suited to the seasoned traveller who is used to one star accomodation.
For bed and breakfast details go to the City of Timmins Web site and email from there. As a general rule the people of Timmins are open, warm and freindly. Head for Timmins Web and introduce yourself to George or Teri and they will be very helpful to new arrivals. Especially those who are travelling on there own to Timmins for the very first time.
Watch out for George's Coffee though, it has known side effects for those who are not used to it!!!! Broadband Internet access is $5.00 Canadian an hour. Soft drinks and snacks are available and Timmins Web is open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Saturday inclusive, and they did open up on the Sunday last year for the Convention if enough deligates express a wish to stay the extra day with them.
When posting here or on the Boards from Timmins Web - LOG OUT first when you get to the site or you will be logged in as the last user if you don't look out. Don't say I have not warned you!
That is a typical example of why Timmins is such a nice place, George giving up his only day off for us.

heh, I guess you're right with the craziness... :D
 - but did you REALLY have to ask me THAT question..?
:p
...according to equations by Paul Schlyter (http://www.stjarnhimlen.se/comp/riset.html):
actually Tom, at 57.02 deg Lat North you've got:
sunrise: 04:23 and sunset: 22:14
making it 17 hrs 51 min of sunshine..! :D
heh, I'm at: 62.57 deg Lat North
hmm... let's see: today the sun came up at 03:33 and goes down at 23:32
...so it's 19 hrs 59 min of sunshine for us today..! :D
...in just a few days, on the 21st - the summer solstice - we'll have 20 hrs 3 min
...and then back to darkness we go...
the winter solstice on the 21st December:
the sun will rise at 11:07 and goes down at 16:01
that gives us: 4 hrs 54 min of sunshine
...and just think about those poor Lapps above the Arctic Circle..!

That's what's holding me back from going, the idea of travelling alone for 10 hours is quite a scary thought. How are you getting there?
I noticed your location is Toronto. I have great news for you!!! It is only a 7 or 8 hour drive from Toronto to Timmins. I have done it many times by myself and there is an easy way to break it up so it doesn't seem so long.
#1 Get a large coffee on your way out of Toronto
#2 Pop a Shania CD in the player and put your foot on the gas pedal
#3 When you arrive in Barrie, make a mental note that you have 6 hours left and that it really didn't take that long to get there..........change the CD
#4 About 1.5 hours later as you pass by Huntsville, wonder if Shania is at her summer home there or not!
#5 When you hit North Bay, stop for lunch and note that there is only 4 hours left, and the first hours passed quickly!!!
#5 1 hour later you are passing through Temagami and you notice the surroundings are becoming more rugged and less groomed.........you are entering the "Great White North"
#6 1 hour later you are in New Liskeard and only have 2 hours to go.....grab a coffee at Tim Hortons, and change the CD......you can't believe how close you are.
#7 Voila..........Timmins.........The Shania Twain Centre Fan Convention........new friends............new memories..........and plans to attend for years to come.
I hope to see you in August!
Tracy :D
#7 Voila..... Timmins - Nice one Tracy, can't wait to read about your Nashville trip! Glad you made it home OK, any more trips this UP! tour?
