MANTUA TWP. -- J. Mason Tomlin School Principal Robert J. Preziosi kept his end of the bargain Monday.
It was back in April when students voted on a performance their principal would have to do if they read a certain number of books
At the conclusion of an end-of-the-year academic and athletic awards assembly at the school Monday, Preziosi stepped out before a packed multipurpose room wearing a dark blue dress, a dark-colored wig and black hat. With a microphone in his hands, Preziosi wailed the Shania Twain hit "Man! I feel like a woman."
It was a reward of sorts decided on by students for being a part of a school district and town literacy promotion project. Combined students in three schools in town read 17,500 books this year, according to Sharon Perpetuino, sixth-grade teacher and a township committeewoman.
Perpetuino, who joined committee members in town earlier this spring by sleeping on the roof of The Home Depot for a night for all the reading, said the town and the school hope to continue working together to get not only children, but everyone, to read more.
Last year, to help mark the municipality's 150 birthday, local officials held a year-long read-a-thon. Each March the National Educational Association kicks off "Read Across America"; the township committee and the school district wanted to work together to promote literacy and officials said they will be back together next year.
Preziosi performed the skit twice during two separate assemblies held Monday before students, teachers and parents. Originally, he was to sing the song from the roof of the school, but inclement weather Friday postponed the performance to Monday and cloudy skies forced the show indoors, school officials said.
