As some of you know I have just retured to home from my exchange period in Spain. As I had a great time and really enjoyed it I was just wondering what do you all think of it?

If you had the chance would you study in another country for a semester, a year or longer? If not, why?

Let me hear some opinions and it doesn't matter whether you are in school or not:p

Well about 2 years I can get to univerisity, and I would LOVE to study abroad too!!! I think it's a great oppurtunity to combinate study with traveling and get to know a lot from other culturs/nature/countries etc. I would love to go to Canada, but I don't know if I can make it, but otherwise i'd love an another country in Europe except France, Germany and Belgium!

Welcome back annette :D

I wanna go to an African english-speaking country...cuz I simply love Africa...the very top of the top for me would be Kenya, but I guess it's going to be South Africa...since it's the only African country I could find in the "study abroad company"'s catalog...

Yep, that's what I thought too. I met a lot of interesting people from all over the world...and got really surprised that none of them knew anything at all about Denmark:funny::p

I can only recommend going if you get the chance. I went to improve my Spanish...don't know how much it improved, but I learned a lot of other stuff..about myself and my goals career wise.

It can be hard to be away from home for such a long time, but when I look back now time just flew away:up:

Well, if you go to university and they have an exchange program and partner universities in the countries you want to go to it's not that expensive. The program I went with is called Erasmus and I didn't have to pay tuition fees, they were payed through that program.

Get a job, save up money and go!:p

I think it's great, especially if you're doing languages. There's no better way to learn than to be in a country. I don't know if I could do a year, I think I'd miss my family too much.

You're right...being in the country where the language you are learning is the best way...unless you like me spoke more English than Spanish:uhh::p But still you learn something just by hearning and reading the language everywhere:up:

Well, a year is a long time...but you can go home on holiday... The people from the UK that was in Alicante had to do a year abroad. My Scottish friend is studying French and Spanish, so she had to take 1 semester in France and 1 in Spain. For her it was compulsory. I had the choise to write 2 reports in English and Spanish or go abroad.

Glad you had a great time! :D I still have 2 more years of high school to do, and then I plan to study in Australia (if I have saved enough money by then) It's always been a dream of mine to go to Australia :) I'm thinking of going for an entire year.

Well it's a great opportunity, and I've been for over 5 years studying in another country, but as all my life I've been moving into 3 countries, then I know enough about those cultures, and languages. But I'm fine where I am now, and I must admit I love here where I am, but I'm usually travelling, then I know enough of this world, but I still need to know much more. Thanks!

I don't think you can ever know enough about the world and cultures. It's things that never stop changing. You can go to one place and come back like 5 years later and it's completly changed.

I plan to spend just over a month next summer in Siena, Italy taking an art history course for my university. It will cost more for this one course than an entire year of school in which I would take five courses , but I think it's very much worth it.

I'm European, and even though I live in Toronto, I've always imagined myself studying and working in Europe at some point. Especially after I went with my high school on trips to Italy and France. So I'm really looking forward to next summer. I just have to figure out a way to pay for it! :funny:

That's cool:D I love Italy...going on vacation there in 2 weeks:up:

Just think of all the new experiences you will get...new country, new culture, new people, new way of teaching...new of all..you'll learn a lot of new stuff:p I know...I should go to bed:uhh:

And if I remmeber correctly you study Italian too...so you'll get to practise that too:p

If you want to do it..you'll find a way to pay for it..that's my theory:]

I would also recommend a study period abroad if one really wants to know the different cultures out there. It gives a better understanding of the diversity and is a great learning period.
Knowing different cultures makes us richer and more open

how come didn't I notice this thread before.... :hmmm: maybe because I was too busy studying abroad. That's right... I am abroad studying and I have got to say that it is great. As Annette said pointed out earlier, you might have a goal or reason for going to a particualr country, but you don't necceraly succeed in that. Annette said she spoke more English than Spanish. Similar thing is happening to me, I think.

I chose to go to Denmark to get better at Danish. But I speak more English than Danish here, shame on me :hide:. That's not soley my problem, I am having problem with the Danes. So many of them don't want to talk Danish to you and only English and the rest doesn't want to talk to foreigners full stop. That is very annoying to me. How am I supposed to practise the skills that I already have and improve them and gain more skill, if so very few of my fellow students are willing to talk to me. But then again, I am learning so much more and more important things than Danish. In the bigger picture, the learning the language part is very trivial. The important thing is that you(or me) learn so much about yourself and about who you really are. That's what I see. My knowledge about myself is increasing and feel sort of more connected to my roots, because when you are in a new country with new people, you have to remember where you come from.

I really recomend studying abroad and I think everybody should do it some point in their life. Even though it might be expensive to you, what you come with out of it is priceless. I have only been here for a month and I am already feeling like that.

Annette

You probably didn't see it before because it's an old thread :p

If you go to another country to learn the language you really have to insist on speaking that language even when people speak to you in English. That is what I have learned from being abroad in Spain and this summer in Italy. However, it's one thing I'm really bad at because it's just so much easier to talk in a language you feel you can express yourself better in.
But keep on insisting...that's the best you can do. And watch a lot of Danish Tv. The news is good to watch when you want to learn another language because you already kinda know what's going on in the world if you read the news online in your own language.

I'll speak Danish with you:D I think it's so cool that someone is learning my language:D

UllaCountryGal
09-15-2006, 5:33pm
oh yeah... I didn't pay attention to the dato.. lol

yeah, you have to insist. but it just so hard cause I cannot carry up a normal conversation verbally in Danish, I can do it in written word though.
Yeah I don't have so good access to Tv here, infact i have not watched Tv since I came here. But I did something that I think was very cleaver. I went into Fredericia this week and got a library card( I don't have that yellow-card still, havent even applyed) and borrowed and audiobook. I of course chose a childrens book because it is in a more simple language. I picked "Anne bliver lærer" from the serie of books about Anne of Green Gable

Annette
09-15-2006, 5:41pm
I know the problem...I'm much better at reading and writing some languages than I am speaking them except English which is like my second language:p

Yeah...that was very clever:up: A good way to learn when you can't watch tv.
I still think that you will still learn a lot of Danish even though you don't speak it a lot because you are here and everything around you is in Danish. I know I learned a lot of Spanish when I was in Spain even though I spoke more English:p
And the same with Italian this year...I picked up words here and there and some grammar.

UllaCountryGal
09-15-2006, 5:55pm
yeah that's right. I have learnt a lot in dansih for this short time i have been here even though I have been hanging out with the other foreigners and speeking english to my 2 hallway-mates. I for example remember my first meal here there were my hallway-mates(I call it my flat-mates) they sat by a table with me, and they spoke together in Danish and I didn't understand a word of what they were saying. But tonight I was listening to them talking and I understood what they where saying. Eline was saying that as a kid her mother told her that she'd get squered eyes if she'd watch Tv for too long, and that she actually believed that her eyes would turn squere so she'd always run to the mirror to look after she had been watching the TV.

Annette
09-15-2006, 6:16pm
Cool!!:D:D You already learnt some  How long are you going to be here?

:funny: My mom used to tell me that too:p
