Sorry bud,

Thanksgiving in Canada is the "SECOND" monday in October.

Their Memorial Day(Victoria Day) is also celebrated early, and they take off the July 4th holiday early too.

Those Canadians always want to be a little bit different(their football field is smaller, and they don't have any "miles" or "gallons", or "pounds" in Canada), but at least it gives me a chance to sneak accross the border when everything is closed in the states for american holidays but everything is open in Canada during our holidays. But it is always "colder" over there, the temperature can be in the 80's over here, but as soon as you cross that border, the temperature drops to the 20's(brrrrrr).

See the movie: "Canadian Bacon" with John Candy(himself a Canadian) for other differences between Canadians and americans.

http://www.shaniaforums.com/wink.gif Actually, Canadian football fields are bigger than U.S. football fields (20 yards wider, 10 yards longer, and the end zones are 25 yards long).

Thanks for the correction, I knew they were different but since I have never actually seen a football game(neither on person nor on tv) you shirley must know more about it than me.

But grammatically speaking: Canadian football fields would be bigger by "meters", and American fields would be smaller by "yards".

Garyphyllis, you are right, we do want to be different, and we are. I find the biggest difference, is that we are better lovers!

And again you are right, my "meter" is bigger than your "yard".

Hi, it's me again! Me, who takes offense to everything and always has to put my two cents in. I'm not sure how, by just crossing the border, the temperature can go down 60 degrees! I'm sorry but, that just doesn't happen! And I'd like to say one thing: In Buffalo, NY, they recently got like a metre of snow, but NORTH of the border, here in
KA-NA-DA, the little bit of snow we've had has melted as soon as it's hit the ground. So, please don't think that just by crossing an imaginary line that divides us from you guys, that the temperature drops, because it doesn't. Oh, and there are some parts of Ontario that are basically as low at California!!

Stephania5,

Buffalo got about 3 "feet" of snow, FEET! We NEVER get a meter of snow down here!

You know what really freaks americans out about Canada? I always take newbees to the grocery store over there, and buy them a BAG of milk.

No one that has never been to Canada, or to a grocery store in Canada, can possibly imagine milk sold in plastic bags! And what is really funny is when they try to put the bag of milk back into the refridgerator after they have opened it!

It took me 2 months to figure out to put those bags of milk in a pitcher!!

At least Canada is better than Europe, where room temperature milk is sold in little cartons on the dry goods shelf - not refriderated at all. They do some kind of super pasturizing invented in Sweden, where you do not have to keep it cold, but it doesnt taste that good.

Um, haven't you ever thought that people would take offense to some of the comments you guys are making. This is supposed to be a Shania forum, remember!?! Now, I do not blame all these people at all who want to leave the forums because of the way everyone has been acting lately! Shania makes up about 1% of our topics now! Can you IMAGINE if she came onto these forums? All our topics would make her SICK!
Now, about the whole American/Canadian thing. I know that I am miss Proud to Be Canadian girl, but never do I dis up Americans or anything like that. So I take great offense to everything that you have been saying about us! It is unneccessary and rude! I sure hope that you'll think twice next time you decide to dis up someone from Shania's home land.

That don'st happen in the UK.

Now I don't mind debate. But The intire US vs Canada thing is silly. On the other hand I'm frimly on the Canadaian side. Sorry Americans, I have family living in Canada, Shanias from there, and a few other reasons.

Stephania5,

This is all in fun, Canadians and americans have been kidding each other since 1812. Its funny, and no one really takes any offense. Why do you think that "Canadian" John Candy made the movie: Canadian Bacon? That movie makes fun of both americans and Canadians.

Im American, and proud to be one. But I do not take offence to any little jokes twords Americans. As long as there not intended to be cruel or hurtful. It's just that when someone does something so weird that we think is so simple in our culture. It's almost common nature just to kind of giggle.
And Gary ,the thing with the milk bag in the refridgerator......I probably would have done the exact same thing as the other newbies LOL. http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif And "Canadian Bacon", thats one funny movie. Its all in fun http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif

Hey all,

That's ultra-pasteurization, and it's readily available in Canada as well. The milk is heated to a higher temperature than normal during pastuerization which gives it an extra long shelf life - 6-12 months. However - once you open it, you're still supposed to refrigerate it, and it's life is reduced to the standard 2 weeks regular milk has due to all the bacteria in your fridge.

Note, I believe bagged milk is being phased out of Canada. The manufacturing cost of the bags vs. the jugs is quite a bit higher... Western Canadian dairies are already moving in that direction, it won't be long for the Eastern ones to follow...

Who knew working at Dairyworld Foods for a few months would ever come in handy? :-)

Patrick,

thanks for the info,,,,,

but if milk in bags is more expensive, then why do those Canadians do it? Just to be different again? Maybe just to make fools out of the american tourists? So they can watch us americans try to pour a glass of milk from out of the plastic bag and have it spill all over? IS MILK IN PLASTIC BAGS THE REAL REASON SHANIA LEFT CANADA?

When I travel, milk is the one food that I try to keep constant, so I look for it where ever I go. I still remember how suprized I was the first time I went to Europe and I could not find ANY cooler with milk in it at the corner grocery store. Not speaking Italian, and not conceiving that milk would be on the shelf, I thought the Italian proprietor was telling me that he had condensed milk, evaporated milk, or powdered milk, or something like that, and I wanted regualtor milk to drink out of the carton.

What next will I find in milk?

Well if Matt notices the latest developments in this topic he will transfer it to the open forum and rename it the milk forum. Gary, you have a certain talent of deviating subjects I really enjoy, so keep up the good work.

Ok, let’s play along... I buy milk in plastic bags around here in Romania. There is also pasteurized milk in carton bags, but it’s more rare and about 3-4 times more expensive, most of it from import. Apparently the technology is more costly. Interestingly the last time I drank it I threw up. So pasteurized milk is not on top of my preferences.

As long as milk still comes from cows I'm happy. One question though. If white milk comes from white cows and chocolate milk comes from brown cows, what comes from spotted cows? Is that how they get swirl ice cream? http://www.shaniaforums.com/wink.gif Personally I prefer chocolate. Maybe because Brown cows are cuter. http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif Do you think dark chocolate comes from dark brown cows and milk chocolate comes from light brown cows and white chocolate from white cows? http://www.shaniaforums.com/wink.gif Why aren't they all milk chocolate if they're all made with milk? http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif Just curious, cause as you know all us Canadians live in igloos, and we can't keep cows here because the milk freezes before we can get it out. If you want to see true mad cow disease you should meet a cow with a frozen udder, talk about tempramental. LOL http://www.shaniaforums.com/wink.gif

Oh yah, Shania site! Did you know that Shania and Mutt get thier milk from the farmer down the road?

Since u brought up the subject of cow's i thought i'd throw in my 2 cents.

Did u know that Shania uses a moisturizer that was originally invented to keep cow udders from getting chapped. I hear she swears by the stuff. http://www.shaniaforums.com/smile.gif
