View Full Version : Fan Convention - More Surprises!

Keep in mind that if we knew Shania was coming to the convention, we would release that information and wouldn't keep it a surprise.

Now with that being said.... if you thought a visit by JD Blair and Cory Churko was big news, you haven't seen anything yet. Be prepared. We have other HUGE, BIG and MASSIVE surprises up our sleeves and I'm glad to say that Tower, RJ and Rich have no clue about what's in store this time. It even shook me up when I found out this afternoon.

If you haven't registered yet, visit the STC site. Less than a month to go!

You will NOT want to miss this event.

Maybe Tracy will let me drop some hints between now and the convention, but let me just assure you that you will be blown away!

No it's not Mutt.

But I really won't be playing a guessing game with all of you. I don't want to slip up and say something I shouldn't. At some point, if we can release the information, we will do so online. Otherwise, those at the convention will be reporting on it from Timmins in a few weeks.

...... Sign up folks!!!! Some of the band is already committed to attend.....ya never know, they may still convince her at the last minute to visit the fans who love her best......but even if that doesn't happen, it's difficult to not feel like you're on a front row seat at a concert when you attend this convention. Hope to see you all there. :) [/B]

That post pretty well sums it all up Richard! Shania has told the STC that she will not attend, but she knows we don't need her there to have a great time, and being a free agent who misses Timmins may well turn up anyway.

It would be better that way, as an official opening of the Shania Twain Centre is bound to put local facilities under severe strain as proved by the homecoming concert back in 1999.

I think I speak for us all when I say that the high you get during the Fan Convention is equal to that at any Shania Concert but lasts for a whole year until the next convention.! Oh dear time to start reading the Robin Eggar Bio again!

A nice live Video link with Shania and Mutt or a special pre-view of a new video or a face from her past, or a visit by some of her family or Emerson Drive or a taped message to us all, or eek! my brain is in overload...

The Staff of the STC and Tourist Department and the Town Hall come to think of it last year lined up so many great events, it is hard to see how they can better themself this year, but I just know they will. Cory you have to hang around longer Sir and really get to know the locals who make Timmins such a special place to stay.

From Ren's first Post this seems to be an event that they did not ever dream they could pull off and all the the above would fit that bill. But when I last spoke to Tracy she was not sure that JD or Cory would even manage to attend, so you never know. I can promise though those who can not manage will be kept up to date with a blow by blow account via the Web.

With less than 4 weeks to go it is time you got your skates on and gave the Shania Twain Centre a call and booked your seat for the trip of your lifetime! Call (001) 750 360 8509 Today. Timmins is -5 Hours GMT

Well, this is a very busy weekend for me. We are out of town for a big family celebration. So I haven't had a lot of time to scan reports of the final concert or get into the mood of it all. But if the massive surprise is just that the Up! tour stage will be going to the STC, I am a little baffled. First of all, it is huge! Where the heck are they going to put it? Second, I have seen it up close five times and I believe once you have spent five minutes looking at it, perhaps walking on it, the novelty is over. Then what? Sorry, the stage in itself will not blow me away. What is more likely to blow me away are the fellow fans and Shania's band members and the spirit, the electricity, and the sheer joy that the interaction among us generates. The stage, like Shania's used outfits, is just a prop.

heh - don't tell me what the surprise is - or elseways Ontario will witness some extreme Finnish speeding on their roads between Toronto and Timmins..!!! :D

Two Finns flying into Canada in August for 2 weeks... we've been looking forward to this for over a year - we would've loved to attend the Fan Convention last year, but our schedule wouldn't allow us... so, we were setting our sights on 2004... we've been looking for an excuse to visit Canada for... ummm... 8 years now - as we've got some relatives over there... and the re-scheduling of Shania's tour's European leg made it impossible for us to go to other concerts besides the one in Helsinki... so, Timmins became our summer holiday target for this year..!

hmm... the speculation on who's the surprise guest(s) at the Fan Convention isn't/wasn't the driving force behind our decision to make the trip... though it will be nice meeting JD and Cory again... we love visiting places we've never been to before, and if there's a possibility to travel there by car - that's the option we usually take... we travel at our own schedule, without a hurry, look around & discover ourselves the amazing richness the countryside has to offer... I've yet to come across any town or city in the world that doesn't hold something special on it's own - it's mostly when you get to chat with the locals living there, you begin to see the character of the town, it's own special magic that you won't come across anywhere else on earth...

I KNOW this trip is going to be just as special as every trip we've ever took before, possibly even more so, for as a bonus we'll be able to meet other fans as well... and get to exchange thoughts and memories about some great concerts we've seen, places we've been and possibly to fantasize on things yet to come...

...on various boards I've even seen some serious ridicule been thrown towards those who are going to attend the Fan Convention... comments like: "get a life"... heh, we've actually got lives, we work our butts off & when we take some time off - we'll go and travel, see concerts, meet interesting people & have a great time..!

Looking forward to seeing You all in Timmins..!

Roger,

This convention will be a tough one to top. This is THE year to attend in my opinion.

I was talking to a couple of fans from the Field area today and I think I`ve convinced them to come up for the convention. It would be nice. The 13 year old girl among them is a rising music star in the North Bay area and has won many local singing competitions. Maybe she's our next northern star. :)

Ren is correct, the stage is not the only thing we have in store for everyone. Roger is right, it is huge and perhaps it will not be exciting for you to see Roger, but without that stage, the performances you saw would have been far less personal and interactive. The fans would have been a great distance from Shania. She had this made specifically for her, to bring her closer to the fans. There is a small dressing area underneath it, etc, etc, so I think the attraction for fans is the opportunity to see how one area can be used to bring a complete show to the fans. Yes, it is infact just a piece of equipment, but a very important piece that will make an interesting exhibit for those interested in the technical side of concerts, and learning more about the thought that Shania puts into every performance.
Ren has enjoyed teasing you with his hints and he will definately be able to deliver, or he wouldn't be able to drop hints. Not everyone will appreciate what we are able to offer as new exhibits, but then again, if everyone were exactly the same, sharing all of the same interests this world would be an awefully boring place.

I hope everyone enjoys the new exhibits Shania is sending our way, we already appreciate them, and they aren't even here yet!!

Tracy, I do appreciate the value of that stage to the tour. As far as I am concerned, one of the greatest strengths of the Up! tour was Shania's ability to get as close as she did to the fans. That central stage was a stroke of genius and made it all possible.

Thinking about how this could be made as interesting as possible for convention delegates if in fact you can get it set up somewhere by then, one thing that has always intrigued me is how Shania and the band members could leap into the pit. Where and how did they land? On a big air cushion? Did someone catch them? If it is the former, I would imagine lots of people would like to give it a try.

It is the people who say things like "Oh I would go to the Shania Fan Convention if Shania was there" that get me going. You have hit the nail on the head John with that post. Try visit Huntsville and the Deerhurst revue if you can, it will be well worth it. The Revue is only $38 Canadian Each, Chump change when you look at the exchange rate!

YOU will love the People of Timmins and the Shania Twain Centre and like me get hooked so you come back again and again. It is the people who go to the fan convention that have a life, and don't waste it parked in front of a Video game or TV! The convention is such a cool way to do all sorts of Non Shania stuff too and being Finnish you are going to be treated like Royalty by the Local Media!!! Just thought I would warn you!.

I see Olgap is attending as well. That's at least 3 new people I'd like to meet. I've asked tiger23 (Travis) if he's ever considered it. Awaiting a reply. Timmins has so many people with hearts of gold, but they attract even more. I didn't know warm hearts were magnetic from that far away.

Meanwhile, I talked with Bill Boychuk the town historian earlier today. After discussing other matters, he tells me if I want to get some excercise, I can do some more work in his gardens. Last time I only got the ground worked up for one half of one section before we went inside to talk.

On the other hand, he also told me he's seen a bear and a moose in his yard in recent days while working out there. And the flies and skeeters are bad right now. They'll probably lighten up by early August and repellent is available. But what do you do when you encounter the following?

One day, Bill was working on his vehicle out on the cement slab beyond the garage. Changing spark plugs and the like. To do this, he was leaning in over the fender from one side, with his head under the hood. Things were going along about as usual. But it's really quiet out there where he lives out of town, by the "bush" with all the trees and near a lake. Well suddenly he heard kind of a light sound, like something rubbing against something. He didn't pay much attention at first. Then he heard it again and suddenly there wasn't as much light coming in under the hood. He looked up and there was a big bear with his paws up on the other fender. Big, husky bear. Their eyes met. Neither moved. Each was as surprised as the other.

The bear was looking for food. Paul tells me that the blue berries are a bumper crop this year. I told him that's good, should mean the bears will have lots to eat and won't have to come into town and beat up on the garbage cans like last year.

Well, these two characters stared at each other, under the open hood, from opposite sides, neither making a sound, and neither making a move. Bill said sudden or misunderstood movement can make a bear excited and trigger an attack. So he just looked at the bear, not backing away, and not showing fear, but also not in a hostile or aggressive way. After what Bill said seemed like about 5 minutes, the bear got down and immediately ran off into the woods (bush).

Also talked with Paul Zudel again to see how he's doing.

It's hard to stay away. I'm making progress on getting closer toward the physical condition I need to be in for solo mtn summiting. A week off for a trip to party and indulge at the convention, will set my conditioning back about a month, at my age. Could get killed on the mtn as a result. It won't be an easy decision. But you've done your part as well as anyone could.

Bob, tell me what I can do to help you decide to go. As you know, I have been squelching my natural inclination to pressure you because I thought that would be counterproductive. (And it's killing me!)

Hi Roger,

You've been doing exactly what is best for your chosen goal. I prefer you not try to add inducements. I appreciate that you've respected that. You've done all I could ask. As time goes by, however, I do like to understand things. So if there's info I missed, or a different perspective, your contributions in that regard have always been helpful, even if on rare occasions from different perspective than mine. By the way, it just popped into my head what the other surprise could be. But I want to be supportive of the STC's goals, so I won't disclose.

I know what the other surprise is!!!! Do you want me to tell you if you are right? I know you have to keep training for your mountain expedition, I respect that, but I wouldn't be "ME" if I didn't encourage you to attend!

Anyway, you can always email me your surprise idea if you don't want to post it. I'll watch to see if I get a PM from you on this site.

If I haven't thanked you before Roger, I'll thank you now. I know how hard you have tried to recruit new people to attend the convention and it is much appreciated.

See you soon.

Well Bob I want you to attend and Roger I spent an age in May trying to talk him around. I worry about you going off into the mountains alone when you could be helping Bill with his Garden.

I don't know what I would do facing a Brown Bear from that close, I suspect the shock factor would make me freeze, so hopefully the Bear would get fed up and go away, but I just don't know. I have yet to see a Moose or Bear close up in Timmins.

Still Flying to Toronto on 19th July, but staying there a few days, meeting some fellow fans and delegates to this years Fan Convention, then doing the 1st half of the Polar Bear Express Bob, so I will say hi from you to the Singer if she is still working the entertainment car, you remember - the Strawberry Blonde who got us both singing along so well that amazing trip to Moonsonee last year.

I know what I would like for this added event for the convention and have made little secret about what I think it is, but I guess the logistics and timing is such that may not happen, but no harm in dreaming about it, as I have.

We all have so much fun at the convention the official events are but a catalyst for the reaction as we all spark off each other anyway. Are you ready Timmins? I said are your ready Timmins....?

Is it August Yet? :D

Hey guys!
Wish I could go! Not been a shania fan long but from reading all your comments I just wish I had the 'Kaching' so I could attend. It sounds like a blast! Also, not having anyone to go with is a major bummer! :scowl:
Keep us informed of how things go and I'll just have to keep reading and imagine! :D

Julie the Kaching factor is a probem, but going on your own IS NOT I have travelled to Timmins on my own the past 4 times or more. Try it yourself!

You're welcome, Tracy. I am only sorry I wasn't able to recruit more people. Just for the record and so you know, every person I contacted wanted to go to the convention but so many of them had reasons for not going that are unassailable: illness in the family, other family difficulties, lack of money, lack of time, prior commitments. I think of some of the people who won't be there and they are a huge loss: someone who has given so much to the Shania fan community over the years and whom a lot of people would like to meet in person; another who like Tom and Richard is a life of the party type; another who would have brought a quiet artistic sense to the proceedings; another who has geat organizational skills.

Speaking of organizational skills, I want to acknowledge Derek and Kelly Sittler from the fan club board, fan con first timers, the ones with the Volkswagen Up! beetle. They are organizing a pre convention barbecue at their home in southern Ontario on July 20 for Tom and some others who are within driving distance.

On a positive note, a lot of the people who can't make it to the convention this year are hoping to go next year.

Oh Tom,

You provide so much enjoyable laughter!

Just so long as the bear doesn't get fed up on YOU!

I haven't seen your thread about the dream yet Tom. Saw the thread yesterday and was going to look at it, but got distracted with other threads and emails first. I'm already spending too much time on the mb's lately, to get my mtn climb preparations done adequately.

Yes, STC organized events are a catalyst for the reaction we spark off each other. I wonder if the sparks would be dimmed if there was too much bright light from other sources. Judging from fan reactions at concerts, that doesn't seem to be a problem. But there might be a consideration about active versus passive fan activities, that generate warmth, mutual progress, and networking that endures.

Roger, I am sure the turnout for 2005 will be a lot higher, as you have pointed out, many of Shania's greatest fans for all sorts of reasons can't be with us this year, but our reporting of events on the net, as near live as we can manage will be a great advert, do a search everyone for the Fan Convention 2003 thread across at http://www.shania-twain.org/mb and have a read. You will quickly sense the fun had by all.

Your publicity this year Roger on both the Forums and the official Fan Club are just tireless and lay the foundation for a steady growth year on year. I did a while back predict between 50 and 100 register for this year and I still stand by that. I know of two, possibly four more registrations which will happen once I get to Timmins.

And Bob "I wonder if the sparks would be dimmed if there was too much bright light from other sources. " Nah what other sources would that be Bob? You have seen what happens at the Concerts and you can't get a brighter light or should I say 'Lights' than that. Shania's fans still want to meet and greet and party on till dawn.

Only thing is the night out at the Zoo will be in grave danger if any other 'evening' event is added as the programme is pretty tight as it is. I doubt anyone will mind however, for I have a Dream... I have a dream that one day.....

Now if there is ANY doubt about your fitness to go mountain climbing Bob, you just call Tracy and she will find you some slag heaps to climb between convention events. Of course as they will be a lot smaller, she will expect you to run up them in your lunch break and still be fit for the Shania Trivia contest at Shania's old School! :)

Hey, I forgot about the slag heaps. I suppose there are hill slopes I could use to help condition the needed muscle groups.

Tracy once asked me when we were there in May, something to the effect of "How big of Timmins mountains do I need?" Well, for some strange reason, my mind went off on a different meaning of that and I got embarrassed and choked down a cough, then couldn't concentrate and forgot about it. Okay, forget about the mountains in Timmins, just find me a good, long hill. No slag though. That dang stuff is too slippery.

Yes, bright lights at concerts are a lot of fun. But that fun is not as sustainable as the fun that comes from events in which fans take a more active part, like the Centre Opening and the first fan convention. My observation about bright lights was for the benefit of those planning the events. I trust their judgement.

As for partying on til dawn, don't get the idea that I'm deserting you; but I wouldn't be available for that this trip if I decided to come. I'll need to be up early to go running most days.

Fine Bob but just about all the Slag heap or tailings have been landscaped so you would be running up hill on short grass, as you know a tailings heap is not good fertile land for even grass.

The Partying until dawn will keep your mental agility at a high state of alertness as long as you don't drink too much ! I will see you sometime Bob, August the 5th would be a good date for me :)
