I'd love to go but I cant either!!! :(:(
My wife and I are going. John and his wife are going. I am not aware of any other forums person going except Tom who like me inhabits other boards besides this one anyway. What I have noticed is that at the six Up! concerts I attended, and upcoming at Derek and Kelly Sittler's barbecue, most of the people I have gotten together with or am likely to meet come from the much maligned fan club board. I suspect this board will be underrepresented again at this year's fan con.

I'd love to go, I want to soo badly. My school starts the day of the convention, which I definitely would miss... but then I also have a skating competition near Colorado Springs on the 7th. Grrrr. I am hoping the day will get change, that happens sometimes. *crosses fingers*
Well I have just been to a pre convention warm up Shania party so I know of at least 6 people who are going to this years convention from the Toronto Area who do not know about this poll.
Kelly and myself gave it a HUGE plug live on Air on Kick FM New Country Radio 95.3 and we all got a cool goody bag from the Station too for all the delegates attending who were at Dereks excellent Barbicue and Shania Video party tonight.
Just 2 weeks to go and this is a special one folks, you are going to kick yourself if you dont phone the STC NOW and tell them you are going.
IS IT AUGUST YET? I SAID IS IT AUGUST YET??
I know people have said they will go, but polls are easier to see who is going w/o goin' thru all the TFC threads ;).....

I just did, but the problem is Derek and Kelly for example mostly only post on the official Fan Club site, I have just got them registered on the Board and Forum sites.
Some who are attending only post on the Shania Board site, many in fact as on the first year only they attended. They never or very rarely post on the Forums due to all the lousy adverts and popups and download rubbish that clogs this Country and Western based commercial site.
I stand by my estimate of between 30 to 100 and my best guess right now is about 45 registered so far. I have 2 more to register as soon as I get to Timmins in a days time or so.
Once Ren gives details of the 'final package' I expect there will be a last second rush and too late will be the cry.... Register now, just 2 week to go to the BEST SHANIA TWAIN FAN CONVENTION IN THE WORLD EVER - UNTIL NEXT YEAR THAT IS!

...and I am really sad to hear that, since first of all: I have nothing against Country & Western... music is music - and that's that. Secondly, those many advertisers we have aren't lousy, in fact: those sponsors of ours carry very high values and goals indeed:

Earth Share, a nationwide network of America's leading non-profit environmental and conservation organizations, works to promote environmental education and charitable giving through workplace giving campaigns. Earth Share is an opportunity for environmentally conscious employees and workplaces to support hundreds of environmental groups at once through a charitable giving drive.

Our member organizations work in your neighborhood, your state, across the country and around the world to help protect and preserve our air, water, land, and wildlife.
Since Earth Share's founding in 1988, thousands of employees across the nation have generously pledged their financial support for the important work of Earth Share's member organizations. Americans for the Arts is the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America. With more than 40 years of service, we are dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts.
With offices in Washington and New York, and more than 5,000 organizational and individual members and stakeholders across the country, we are focused on three primary goals:
1. foster an environment in which the arts can thrive and contribute to the creation of more livable communities
2. generate more public- and private-sector resources for the arts and arts education
3. build individual appreciation of the value of the arts
To achieve our goals, we partner with local, state, and national arts organizations; government agencies; business leaders; individual philanthropists; educators; and funders throughout the country. We provide extensive arts industry research and information and professional development opportunities for community arts leaders via specialized programs and services, including a content-rich website and an annual national convention.
Local arts agencies throughout the U.S. comprise our core constituency. A variety of unique stakeholder groups with particular interests like public art, united arts fundraising, rural and small communities, state arts agencies, and emerging arts leaders are also supported. Through national visibility and local outreach, we strive to motivate and mobilize opinion leaders and decision makers who can make the arts thrive in America.
Americans for the Arts produces annual events that heighten national visibility for the arts, including Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy, the National Arts Awards, and the Public Leadership in the Arts Awards (in cooperation with the U.S. Conference of Mayors). Local arts organizations in communities throughout the country benefit from special national projects such as the Animating Democracy Initiative, the YouthARTS Resource Initiative, and the National Arts Education Public Advertising Campaign with the Ad Council.
Americans for the Arts was created in 1996 as a result of the merger between the National Assembly of Local Arts Agencies (NALAA) and the American Council for the Arts (ACA)—one of the small number of successful unions of two national nonprofit groups. Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch has led our organization since the merger, growing Americans for the Arts' annual budget from $2.7 million in 1996 to $12 million in 2004.

Welcome to Girls Go Tech. This Web site is owned and operated by Girl Scouts of the USA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in New York City, New York.
Girls in Science, Technology and Math
Even if you don't realize it, math, science and technology play an important part in your life. It is all around you! During your lifetime you will have to depend more and more on your understanding of these subjects, but you'll be surprised how much fun you can have, and are already having, with math, science, and technology.
Math is all around you
Many people think of math as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. That's ONE type of mathematics – arithmetic. But math is so much more than that. It's the algebra that NASA uses to plot a rocket's path to Mars. It's the trigonometry surveyors use to plan the location of a new road. It's the geometry calculations that help you make that free throw while playing basketball with your friends.
Technology is all around you
Technology is already a major force in the lives of today's girls. Just think how most girls are connected through PCs, cell phones or pagers, not to mention VCRs, MP3 players, DVDs and countless other devices with embedded chips. And that doesn't include all the daily appliances, machines, vehicles and instruments that also use technology. How many items can you come up with?
Science is all around you
Most of the information that your brain receives comes through your eyes. Sometimes, instead of waiting for all the signals from the billions of nerve cells to come in, your brain takes shortcuts. If images are unusual or unfamiliar, the brain can get confused. Images that "fool" the brain are called optical illusions.

I really hope you guys have ALOT of fun :D

Fact John. Those with SLOW dial up connections can't help that. The infrastructure of old world countries can not be updated in the click of a finger.
Adverts INTRUSIVE adverts may be the Norm in some countries but in the UK they are regarded as the hight of BAD TASTE. As for the C & W connection, it is commercial just like the official Music Today ""Fan Club" and my outspoken comments on the official ST Fan club site are a matter of record.
This is not a personal attack at the moderators who in my opinion run the best Shania moderated site in the WORLD here on the Forums.
This is an attack on the owners of the overall site who of course host more than two dozen similar Fan Forums all at this same IP address. That SITE sucks and please some Shania knight in white armour with the cash, time and resources, take the Shania Forums away from C & W Weekly or whoever and run it as a non profit resource advert free for Shania Fans, just like the Board site at http://www.shania-twain.org
My PC has slowed down to a stop with the Flash ad on this site more than once and I have been forced to reset it as the dial up connection can not cope with the bandwidth demands of that advert.
I come here to read and chat about Shania not get downloads and Flash movies RAMMED in my face with popups by the dozen every time a page is changed. Sorry if that upsets you John but that is the way I see it from my perspective.

Oooh you are going to have so much Fun in Timmins John, you will never want to leave - this is of course just the warm up for the 2005 Fan Convention, so don't worry all the folk who can not manage this year, we will keep some seats for you in 2005 and of course keep you posted on this year on the net.
I'd love to say the same but one year I'll for sure be there :)
I'd love to say I'll be in your Colorado one year for sure, but actually it will be next month, AND at least one year beyond, assuming I survive the 14r's this time. ;)
Regarding the poll:
I can go. And I'd like to go. But I've decided not to go, for reasons other than the options given in this poll. Meanwhile, there's still a small chance I'll change my mind.
I've attended the previous convention and most other events for ST fans in Timmins. I've also been to Timmins long before Shania Twain existed, and during times there were no ST related events, including a couple months ago. There are a lot of benefits for me to attend again this time, and those will be hard to give up.

Yep, I did take your original meaning as you intended, thanks.
Last trip, we did hikes up Mt Crested Butte, Schofield Pass, West Maroon Pass, Middle Brush Creek to Cumberland Basin, and several other places in the Elk Mtn Range, as warm ups. Then we summited Mt Princeton in the Sawatch Range, near Buena Vista, via the more difficult route of Grouse Creek Canyon.
This time I'll again be in the Elk mtns, but from the Aspen side for views of the Maroon Bells, and hikes up other places including possible summit of Castle Peak. Then probably also again from the Gunnison/Crested Butte side for West Maroon Pass, Pearl Pass, etc. Mt Evans will be a drive up, after acclimatizing elsewhere.
After studying up on Castle Peak, I've learned they recommend a rope on the approach from the south, due to exposure. They recommend an ice axe and crampons on the approaches from the north because the snowfields/ice glaciers that never completely melt.
No wonder we didn't make it to the top last trip there in 2000. I'm just a hiker and scrambler, not prepped for rope climbs, or snow climbs. But since I'm solo this time, guess I'll get an ice axe and crampons for the supposedly easier route to the top. A rope isn't going to help me much going alone.
Reading climb reports from last several years sounds a bit scary. A few experienced climbers in their prime of life, found it easy. But most encountered various difficulties. I had to look up what "exposure" and "post-holing" meant, since both are encountered on this climb.
Exposure = State of openness with relation to the distance of a fall. (When they say "openness," they mean like when you must use a ridge with a cliff on one side, or when you must use a narrow trail up the side of a cliff, where a slip or mis-step means a fall over the "open" side to death or major injuries.) Exposure is not something I'm seeking. I don't have a death wish.
Postholing = Hiking through deep snow that is not frozen solidly enough to supprt your weight and allws your leg to drive through the crust as if you've stepped into a hole, doing really nasty things to your knees. (Postholing is usually only a problem in the warmer part of the day when the sun and temperature softens the snow/ice. At night and in the morning, the snow/ice is usually harder and easier to walk on. But it tends to get steeper nearer the top and slipping becomes a problem.)
They are all asking for you Bob, every one you met in Timmins is wanting to see you again. I know how to make you feel guilty! Seriously though they are all asking for you and wish you the best in your climbing soon.
Thanks for the info Tom. It's nice to know I'm appreciated. I do like to synthesize new things of value when I meet people in Timmins. But there are limits to my time and energy. And it's wise to avoid spreading myself too thin.
Do you have any suggestions on how I can most gently break the news to Tracy? I hate to cause her any discouragement, when she needs all her energy and optimism for the large tasks of preparing for the convention soon.

You're going to make her cry Bob. That`s not very nice.
Like I said in the email I sent you, best to be prepared for any event on your trip. There will be other fan conventions and you will get back to Timmins. Besides, I think Tracy has a job waiting for you in the exhibits area.

woah .....that's tough work!.. Thanks for the description. Me and my family have hiked in past years and haven't done it in a long time since we had a problem on the mountain one year which was scary. I'd like to try mountain climbing sometime...but it's a scary skill to do. I hope you do really well and have alot of fun and conquer that mountain with a 'I'm gonna take that mountain' attitude like Reba :p. We've been to numerous mountao areas I don't remember them all but it was fun :)

We almost got killed in a storm on our way back down from the summit, due to trying to go up too fast and losing the trail and summiting too late. The problem of encountering storms during the early afternoon, is not infrequent according to the logs and picture stories online over the past several years. But that's during the "monsoon" season, which lightens up about the first of September. I'd be interested to hear what made your climb scary, by email, if you or your family need privacy.

The bold and determined approach can work for young persons. Those of us no longer in the prime of life must take a different approach, that of sustainable pace, and modifying the goal according to the circumstances as we encounter them. We have to train carefully, know our physical limits and be able to read well not only the mountain and the weather, but our own condition. That's one reason I'm going solo this year, instead of climbing with my nephews who are recent college grads. Once I sort out my own comfortable rate of climb, I'll be able to guide my brother next year, then climb for years into the future, with relatives and friends my age.
You're going to make her cry Bob.
Ouch! I was doing my best to avoid that. But I suppose it's nice of you to tell me how much we will miss each other. We might have avoided this, if I had not come up there a couple months ago with Tom. But that was a very enjoyable, educational and productive trip, which I wouldn't want to undo.
Tracy is terrified of heights and wouldn't cross the Mackinac bridge on her way home from Nashville due to my description of that bridge. Do you suppose it would help distract her from crying if I described Castle Peak in as much detail? Let's see now, it's a bit over 14,200 feet at the summit. Airplanes pressurize their cabins at 10,000 feet and above, due to thinning oxygen. The trailhead begins at about 8,000 feet, and it's about 3,000 feet from there up to the tree line...,
Like I said in the email I sent you, best to be prepared for any event on your trip. There will be other fan conventions and you will get back to Timmins. Besides, I think Tracy has a job waiting for you in the exhibits area.
Just so long as it doesn't involve my being shot, treated by a taxidermist, then hoisted as an exhibit.
There is so much other material from the Up! tour, from Shania, her management, and from fans, to organize and put to good use. That would be fun to work on, so long as I'm not depriving someone of work who needs it more than I.
Bob if you are SURE you are not attending, you had best phone Tracy and break the news to her directly. She is just back from her holidays and will devote a lot of time and energy during that phone call to talk you back around to attending ;)
They have done an unbelievable amount of new work on displays at the centre using the new material Shania and Mutt have sent them in the past few weeks, over 170 new items are displayed and the centre is just looking stunning. 3 coach loads arrived yesterday at the Centre so they are having to deal with them as well as the run up to the convention. I can't tell you about the big secret, 'cause they are not telling me ANYTHING other than it is BIG and that is it... Timmins is looking good in the sunshine and clear blue skys of the past few days. Bugs are not as bad as I have seen in past years. Trees are doing really well except for one marked EJA which has been eaten by something.
My one is the tallest of the lot and all show loads of green growth at the tips.
Just a week to go on Thursday and the numbers are looking good for a record attendence this year. For those who have not decided, if at all possible try make it to Timmins for August 5th to the 9th this year, you will never regret it, give the centre a phone. Details on http://www.shaniatwaincentre.com

Hmm.. were you the tallest of those who planted the trees? :p
That might be the reason :p

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I'll give her a call and let her know. That might be easiest, since she might be too busy to read all the mb's these days. Let's see now, which of these will hurt less, calling for a dental appointment in town, calling for a car maintenance appointment 45 miles away, or calling Tracy. Hmn, I better do the hardest ones first, so I don't run out of oomph.
What a Gentleman you are Sir! Yes they are just so busy right now, so I am trying to stay out of there way and a last second rush of registrations too. I have signed up 2 locals and I have a third one who I hope to see today lined up. Looks like they are going to need two coaches to bus us around the various events this year :D

Well, I tried. They're very busy and Tracy was in meetings etc & not available yesterday. So I found a better time to call today. When I did, they were still quite busy, so I just left a message with Shirley. There was a lot of noise in the background. I wonder if she heard me correctly. Reminds me of the attempted phone calls to the ST party at the Globe in the Falklands a few months ago.

Tracy thanks you for the message Bob. Yes they are real busy, being the hight of the tourist season the centre is showing round a lot of people in addition to the last second rush for Fan Convention registrations.
I have registered a 3rd local Shania fan from Timmins yesterday. Tracy has a full time job when I am in the centre keeping my nose out of places she does not want me to go looking in. Something amazing is hidden away someplace I suspect. More changes to the displays which will look stunning when you all visit in August. I am not sure who is the more excited about the 2004 Convention, the Centre staff or myself! JUST A WEEK TODAY TO GO!!!
WX continues hot and sunny so summer is here in Timmins at last. Going to a Vegas night at the 147 Club tonight with loads of prizes, should be fun.

That's a great relief. Thanks for relaying the news about Tracy's receipt of my message, Tom.
That's a funny line about Tracy's full time job keeping your nose out of places she doesn't want you looking at the STC. She wouldn't have that problem with me at all. With my low energy, I could easily just go into a quiet corner and sleep for long periods. More likely, though, I'd be out and about the community, visiting old friends, and building new possibilities with potential benefit for all involved.
Tho I have no desire to see it before anyone else, I am intrigued about Ren being blindfolded and taken to see the stage-in-the-round. I suppose it is a valuable item at about a quarter million dollars to build. But without it's center section, without all the sound, light, computer and communication gear that goes with it, and the support equipment that was connected to it at concerts, it's like a car without an engine, it doesn't work and doesn't run. But unlike a car, into which a skilled back yard mechanic can replace the engine, the stage has some things which are irreplaceable in order for it to work as designed.
One of those things are the songs written by Shania and Mutt, then edited thru ProTools etc and engineered/programmed into the gear for the stage.
Another of those things is Shania performing those songs on stage in front of a sizeable audience.
And a 3rd thing is the band entertaining all around, when Shania can't be on all sides at the same time.
So I doubt anyone in Timmins would expect to recoup big bucks if they tried to swipe the stage.
But I could see that security from vandals at least might be a consideration. Don't want to lose even small parts of the stage just because of a few immature nincompoops.
But if that were the only concern, they wouldn't have blindfolded Ren. Something else is going on.
Meanwhile, the stage will work in a different way, as an item of interest for up close and personal inspection by Shania fans, and as personal memento for Shania's family in the years to come.
What all else might be in the works, remains to be seen. The storage of the stage by the STC was included as a small part of some other suggestions I made when I was there in May. I wonder if they are doing some of my other suggestions. If so, big doings could be afoot, at some point, even if not necessarily all beginning with this convention. With the things already planned and the special presence of two key band members, the event is already as much as any realistic person could hope it to be.
...but if there is a 2005 Convention I'LL BE THERE!! I dont care, I'll swim the Atlantic if i have to!!
So, best of luck to everyone going this year....but keep an extra seat or two reserved for me in '05!!
See you in 2005 then! ONLY ONE WEEK TO GO!!!! Are you excited yet?

Well I know nothing and that is not from a lack of curiosity Bob. They are saying NOTHING to me this year and that is just so un usual. The Centre is also a lot more busy than I can ever remember and I suspect an attendence record could be set if August follows July.
Tracy is now agreeing with my original prediction from last year that between 50 and 100 will attend this years event. Just one week for late registrations, go to http://www.shaniatwaincentre.com and give them a phone.
They will not even show me this years T Shirt before the event! I will start wearing my one this weekend to get the locals going! I will have 2 registration forms in my Sporran so I can pounce and grab them right away.
Well, some of the Timmins residents have direct connections, as you know Tom. So while the out-of-towners are sometimes out of the loop, if a basis for special interest develops, it is known to some. And that is shared, even if within somewhat carefully protected circles. But let's not go speculating and contribute to unfounded and unfulfillable rumors. It's a terrific event they have planned. And the already known events are going to fill attendee's desires to overflowing. And you know how well the results endure, are built on and grow even long after the convention is over. That's a benefit even ST concerts don't achieve. I don't remember hearing about withdrawal after a convention. It's just the opposite. People stay invigorated. New friends and positive relationships can do that for you.
It's just that I was intrigued about some aspects of the stage. You know how the human mind works. When it doesn't have all the facts, it naturally tries to connect the dots, to make sense out of things, or to find meaning in the parts that are known. In my experience, most of the time, our guesses turn out wrong.

Hello Bob,
I received your message of well wishes yesterday. I really hoped you could attend, but I understand. I was going to call you and attempt one last time to convince you but I know your mind is made up. Perhaps you could change it in these last few days. I will remain positive!!
Take Care,
Tracy
Hi Tracy,
Thanks for taking time out of your extremely busy schedule at this time of year, to post your personal message above.
Yes, I'm almost always free to adapt my decision, when additional information shows that to be appropriate. So I can change my plans. But based on what I know at present, I'm headed in the right direction, to prepare properly for the mountain climbing. I did strain a muscle a week ago and that's set me back a bit.
I will do my best to take care. And I hope you will too. You may not have decisions coming up soon like I do, about how to avoid falling off a mountain. But you have key decisions on behalf of many people, not just one. And the accumulative effect of yours, has more important impact. I wish you all the best, and am glad you will remain positive.
Bob
Timmins4ever (Chris) has nailed my feet to the floor of Timmins Web to keep me away from the Shania Twain Centre. Something is Afoot ;) or is my foot nailed to the floor or what? Tracy is safe from the TW factor today.... But tommorow???? Will I gain access to the secret of the 2004 Convention?
I can be very good at this sort of thing... Will Tracy be able to stop me? Tune in same time tommorow for the latest factoids!!!
Tom, I am enjoying speculating about what the surprise is. Don't you dare spoil the surprise with any inside knowledge! It is not fair to Tracy and the others.

Once I sort out my own comfortable rate of climb, I'll be able to guide my brother next year, then climb for years into the future, with relatives and friends my age.
man, that's scary
here is a link to a post i made a while ago:
http://shaniaforums.com/showpost.php?p=532741&postcount=1032
describes the mountain thing a littlke, if you wanna know more, just ask in here. It's not much but it was really freaky.

Getting stuck up there at night when you didn't intend to and weren't prepared for it is a bit daunting. Mountain lions and black bears are less of a problem for a group of half dozen adults like I had. But in my upcoming solo hikes and climb, it becomes a definite issue to prepare several layers of defense.
In Denali Wilderness Park in Alaska, I did quite a lot of preparation for dealing with grizzleys, and with the good organization of park ranger system, my nephew and I succeeded during our 3 days and nights hiking and camping out on foot among all the animals. But I know less about black bears. Combine them with mtn lions, and I'll need more than just knowledge, I'll need equipment, and plan to have it.
Those indoor rock climbing walls are interesting. If I was younger, I'd try the ones they have here in Galyan's. I used to be skinny and strong and could do one armed pull-ups. But that was 40 years ago.

Hee hee....
Ren told me what it was a couple of weeks ago!
Something quite large...
<no dirty remarks please! ;-) >
I just didn't want to rub it in for too long, so I waited until now to say something.

Well I will be the last to know, Tracy has set a secret Weapon on me, a Guy called Chris, a Timmins local (Timmins4ever) who is keeping me away from the STC as best he can. Got a good plug in for the Fan Convention however yesterday when Joyce from the Timmins Daily Press did a long interview about Shania's fans and all that at the STC. Tracy got interviewed as well so the local build up to the Convention is starting to warm up.
My personal target for numbers this year has now been passed and still the registrations are arriving, mostly locals but some from far away calling by phone too.
I have been told a great place to pick up Timmins gossip is the Hair Saloon, so getting what little I have left cut today and I will have both ears to the ground, my chest out, back in and nose to the grindstone.
Tracy has been messing with my mind, "Big and Massive may not mean physical size" she said smiling at my perplexed look. So I rekon they have Doctor Who's Tardis and they are gonna put all 50 plus of us in it and transport us to Shania for a camp fire singsong where ever...
Less than a week to go, call the STC and register today for the 2004 Worldwide Shania Twain Fan Convention Aug 5th to the 9th held in her hometown of Timmins and see the wonderful Shania Twain Centre with a backstage pass, journey to the centre of the Earth on the Gold Mine Tour, see how Shania's Step Father grew his tree saplings and planted them in the bush, go fishing, golfing, singing, meet the Civic leaders of Timmins and those who new Shania back the Longshot days, see the Wonderful Shania Twain Suite in the Days Inn, see Eilleen's Music class and old School and win the Shania Trivia Contest.
Best of all, hang out with fellow Shania Fans and get to know the people of Timmins, the "City with a heart of Gold".
Total number of registered for the convention was OVER 68 I believe around 72 was the final tally, proves just how silly polls like this are when many who attended did not read this thread or are even members of this site.
Like music award polls treat them with a pinch of salt.

like I said before..this poll only refers to the members of THESE Forums ;) :). There's no way non-members and people that don't go on-line could vote if they don't know about it...
I'm hoping that next year this same poll will have much more of the top row and less in the 'no i can't' b/c they will :D

Oh Yes, the only thing that will be big and massive next year is the number of Forum members turning up for Fan Convention 2005! :D
I will be posting my pictures very soon on all the main sites.
