Last night I got a call from David Hartt, the Keyboard player from Longshot, Eilleen Twain auditioned for this Timmins band when she was just 16 and he showed me all the early photo's and then we went on a tour of the surviving hotels and Tavern's they played in, including Jake's in South Porcupine and what is left of the orgininal JP Escapade Lounge, as well as the Pamour Hotel, where they played but once there very last gig together.
He remembers that gig like it was yesterday, "Because of the tensions between us all we knew it was all over and for that reason we played better together than ever before" "We rocked the joint - it was just so crowded it was a memorable performance" "When Eilleen did the solo's EVERYONE listened".
I got all the memories of the fun and not so fun times they shared back then and listened to the only surviving Demo tape Longshot did with just the 3 songs on it, The first was written by David and he duets with Eillleen, the harmony so perfect it really grabbed me as quality. The second two songs were both ballards written by a 16 year old Shania who sings both solo and they are hunting and very special - so good I listened to all 3 twice.
Typical of the people of Timmins, David enjoyed sharing and spent the whole evening with me. I spent most of the time listening to an amazing part of his life he would never forget or regret.
The last song on the demo was called I'm Invisible. Well Eilleen may of thought so back then, but look at her now. Shania if you read this I hope it brings back the memories of your early years as a professional singer in Timmins and I really hope one day you will record those early songs again or perhaps give David Hartt a call and talk with him about the old days. I will pass his number onto Tracy Eilleen so you can contact her if you wish.
He is Married now and works as a Technician in the Nuclear Power Industry some 9 hours drive from Timmins. Other members of the Convention are going to get the same treatment though David can not attend the whole event I am so happy he took time to re live the old days with me over a beer or two.
