A warm welcome to all Shania Twain fans

The Daily Press
Editorial - Friday, August 06, 2004 @ 07:00

You can see them everywhere now. They’re in our restaurants, in our hotels and walking the streets. They’re the ones wearing the Shania Twain shirts, buttons and hats.

The second annual Shania Twain Fan Convention has officially kicked off in Timmins and the visitors have once again poured in to pay tribute to their favourite musician and meet each other on common ground.

The convention is a special get-together for these diehards who come from all over the world to take part.

Many know each other from online message boards and other fan-related communications, but distance keeps them from regular face-to-face meetings.

Let’s welome them warmly and make sure their stay here is an enjoyable one.

From their different backgrounds and cultures, the one common denomitator they share is a respect for Shania Twain’s rise to fame from her humble beginnings in Timmins and their respect and curiousity about our golden little city.

As hosts, we could ask for no better company.

Sharing a love of Shania

They travelled thousands of kilometres to be in Timmins this weekend to share their love of Shania.

And to kick the Second Annual Worldwide Shania Twain Fan Convention off, the more than 60 delegates hosted a meet-and-greet at the Shania Twain Centre.

“It’s quite a thrill for me to finally be here and meet other fans who I’ve been talking to on the Internet for the last year,” said Olga Pekalska, an educational assistant from Ottawa who says she’s been listening to Twain for 10 years now. “The first concert I ever attended, on Sept. 27 last year, was a Shania Twain concert.

“As soon as I got home that night I got online and joined the official fan club and the North American fan club. I’ve been on the Internet ever since.”

Fans came from the United States, Finland, England, Scotland and throughout Canada to attend this year’s event, said Tracy Hautenan, customer service manager at the Shania Twain Centre.

“We have 17 returning delegates from last year’s 35,” she said. “We had special name tags made up for those who attended the inaugural fan convention so they could wear them and be recognized in years to come.”

Richard Sessions, an import specialist from Goshen, Ind., was one of the originals. He made a special presentation to the Shania Twain Centre at the event’s official opening.

“I donated the Shania Twain Fan Convention T-shirt I won in last year’s auction after it was signed by all the original delegates back to the centre,” he said.
