Working with Shania is an Up-lifting experience say band members Cory Churko and JD Blair.
The two, who were in Timmins for the second annual Shania Twain Worldwide Fan Convention over the weekend, took a spare moment to tell The Daily Press about their famous employer.
“She’s a great person to work for,” said Churko, a fiddler and guitarist. “We just show up, get on stage and play. It’s a lot of fun.”
Churko, who is originally from Moose Jaw, Sask., said life on the road with Shania is "the best."
“I’ve been a member of her band since December of ‘97,” he said. “We all spend a lot of time together when we’re on the road, but she’s been devoting a lot more of her time to doing the parent thing since Eja arrived.”
The child turns three soon.
Churko also said Shania, whose real name is Eileen, is a bit of joker.
“Close to the last show of the Up! tour, she told us we would be shooting a DVD in New Orleans and we needed all new clothes,” he said. “The wardrobe girl bought us each these tight combination wrestling/bicycling outfits,” Churko said. “The outfit I was issued was fluorescent green with white and black shot all through it. Alarm bells went off in my head when I saw it because I’ve got chicken legs. It had little shoulder straps that barely covered my nipples and the rest, except for the shorts, was bare.”
The group was told they had to go to an arena for a pre-shoot meeting.
When the eight-member band was led into the darkened arena all they could do was wonder what was going on.
“When the lights were suddenly flipped on, we saw balloons and tables of food everywhere,” Churko said. “Musicians had been hired and Eileen was there.”
A technician had posted a message to the band on the arena’s electronic message board, Churko said.
“It had everybody’s name on it,” he said. “When it stopped moving, the words ‘thank you, you guys are the best! love Eileen’ flashed across the board.”
