View Full Version : My Fan Convention 2 Photos
Moderators, please move this thread to the Picture Board if you prefer to see it there.
I took 344 photos of the convention but of course a lot are just repeats or flubs. A lot of others are kinda boring so I will just load the more interesting ones. Today I will load just three as teasers. We are home today but out of town again tomorrow. I will have to post the remaining photos next week.
This is a pic of JD Blair. We met on the golf course and had a one on one chat for five minutes. Very nice man with an old fashioned kind of graciousness. This is the best pic of got of him. Obviously, I didn't take the pic myself since I am in it. Here are two versions, one with me in it and one with me cropped off.

I didn't actually get to talk with Cory although I could have easily enough. Here is a pic of Cory coming out of Shania's bus. A bunch of us saw him going in so we were smart enough to realize he would be coming out of the back door in a couple of minutes. As he came out he saw this array of cameras pointed at him so he hammed it up. LOL!! Here he is girls:

This next pic was taken after the banquet. Cory and JD led a karaoke of I'm Outta Here with some fans on stage with them singing, dancing and clapping the drum parts while other fans looked on. Man! What a great time!

Excellent photos Roger, thanks so much for sharing!!!
Paul:)
I like the one of us on the stage. That was a really special moment for me.
Ren
Yes did we ever have fun with that stage, we rocked the night away playing air guitar, keyboard, violin, drums - strutting and signing autographs for those left on the floor and throwing our baseball hats to the crowd.
We even stole there Sharpie's at every chance, just like the real thing. It was like a giant play pen for adults and children alike, and the really great thing is we all get to come back next year and do it all over again.
Mimeing and Singing to "Outta here" with JD and Cory, Suzi Q and Tony with a giant Shania on the twin video screens, dancing with the staff of the STC on HER stage in Shania's home town..
Life just does not get much better than that.
Nice start to your photos, Roger.
Lot of familiar faces there in the group photo. I even recognize several backs of people's heads.

Hope you don't mind if I practice up on people's names in this picture puzzle. Sure were a lot of you getting in early. From left in back row, I see John and Jaana, ? Eric German, Ken Berel, Benjamin, LindaB, Timmins4Ever (Chris), Tom in back, Jack Smith in front, Chris Backa, Grace, and Richard Sessions. In front row kneeling or sitting, from left, we have Roger, Betsy, Irene Cross, Debbie Smith, Bonnie, ?Ted and ?Andrea.
This was at the registration. Richard was so engrossed in whatever he was doing he didn't even notice Franchie hanging on him! LOL!!

That is my favorite shot in this batch. This is a very unique, rare and personal picture. Richard is rarely serious, almost constantly smiling, laughing or cheering. And Frenchy is often the more serene one. I love it. Oh, and Richard's face is often in the shadows also, when he's wearing that hat. Great capture there. This is not only a side of Richard you'll rarely see, it's just got something special to it.

Ouch! Hey, you must have gotten a hair cut or something. Maybe you were too far from the flash? Maybe it was those glasses you were wearing on your head. Yep, now that I look again, it does look like you. Sorry about that. It isn't as though I don't know you. I've ID'd you correctly even from behind on multiple prior posts. That part of your face was just too small for me to see in that photo.
Alanb!!! Hey, great. That's one more I'll know soon. He and I confab quite abit on and off line, but I didn't know what he looked like before. I might have trouble telling him apart from Ted, though.
I'm glad I got Bonnie and LindB right. I've had a heck of a time with them and one of the Theresas and a Heather, I think it was.
Thanks for correcting my info Ren. Every little bit helps.
Awesome pics, thanks for sharing Roger. I have to save up money and bring the kiddies over, they would love it.
You're going to bring the kiddies over from NZ? Wow, that would be even farther than Tom Waller came, I think. Maybe you can do the reverse of the person with a Texas accent, who asked for a ticket to Oakland (California), then got on the plane and took a snooze, only to wake up and disembark in Auckland, NZ.

On late Friday morning we had a choice of the Gold Mine Tour, the Milson Forestry Tour or the Cedar Meadows Wildlife Tour. Since we had been down the mine twice before and had done the forestry tour last year, we opted for the wildlife tour.
Here is Will in the middle with our guides. Sorry I don't remember their names or positions.

The Guide on the left is Richard Lafleur, one of the owners of Cedar Meadows. He co-owns the resort with a number of his brothers.
I do not know the guide on the right, but it is quite possible a Lafleur relative as they usually hire staff from within their own LARGE family.
Ren
Thanks for the excellent pictures, and the brief descriptions.
Yes, I like the vests too, and had one for some of my photo trips. It was so cool that I gave it to my nephew, eventually. Then for myself, used my sewing maching to modifiy a wet rib belly pack, for specialized camera equipment holding during hikes and climbs.
I thought the guides were John and Jaana, in an earler picture of the same trio, probably posted by another member. This corrects my info about that.
The elk thought he was a person, hey? I've seen a bit of that in close family pets. But I also think there's more going on there than that. There's a tendency for humans to anthropomorphize.
Ah, so that's Earl I've been seeing in various pics and wondering who he was. He was sitting with a strawberry blonde in the first group photo I saw posted by Alanb (on another mb), that I brightened up some to help ID attendees.
Intrigued by the picture of the pit in the center of the stage. Might be Susie Q there. Don't recognize the other person, tho the top and back of the head is somewhat similar to a person from Ottawa.

It is hard to photograph the interior of a bus in any case because everything is so compact. Having 70 people troup through it adds to the challenge.

Roger
I think I might know what you mean (anthropomorphize), but could you explain this so I'd know if I was right or not? :p
Here's what the book says: "transitive senses : to attribute human form or personality to
intransitive senses : to attribute human form or personality to things not human"
Now if someone can remind me what transitive and intransitive mean, we'll all be in the clear.
In my experience, there is a tendency for humans to see the whole world as if it revolves about and for humans to a greater extent than is real. And they project human qualities into things, especially those they like, such as pets or likeable animals. Sometimes they even project human qualities into things they don't like, such as vending machines and computers when they don't work. This kinds of subjectivity can be creative, interesting and fun. But it's not always reliable.
Here I am with an old Shania buddy on the left (Bryce) and a new Shania buddy on the right (Ted):

Elise posts at the fan club board under the name wwwdotshania. She and her family were in Timmins during the convention but not registered as conventioneers. She wanted to meet fellow fans and vice versa. The Central Tavern is open to everyone so she met some of us there.
Elise bears an uncanny resemblance to Shania. She has caused a stir in public places more than once because of it. Two band members actually mistook her for Shania on one occcasion. Here she is with her husband, Jay.

One of the disadvantages of being a lot older than most of the other conventioneers is that we poop out early. Also we knew we had to be up early the next day. So we left an hour or two before most people. So to Bryce and others who got up and sang after we left I apologize for not being there to capture the moment. Hmmm, maybe you figure you are the lucky ones!
Roger
Thanks for the karaoke pics Roger
Awesome pictures Steve, thank you. Throughout I was asking "Are you having fun yet" and as you can see, Yes we were, allways.
We took over the Zoo and the Mac and the Stage and pretty well anything else we got to play on or with!!!! The convention this year has made a BIG favourable impression on the Locals in Timmins and this will grow each year as an unstopable force for good. Next year even more locals are promising to join in the fun and games and actually register for the whole 4 day event.
This is Ivory. I will have more to say about this remarkable teenager later. You sure know how to tickle our curiosity  :p

Heh, and you guys think *that's* a good pic of Cory coming out of the bus..? ;)
(...*a lot* MORE pics to come - I've got about 400 of them & 3 hours of video...)

Great Pics Roger!
Okay now, the Trivia Contest. Here is our trusty quizmaster, Ren. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture. I think my flash didn't go off. But this pose was so priceless I brought this photo back from the dead with the magic of Photoshop.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fancontrivia01.jpg
Tracy was Ren's co-quizmistress (hmm, that doesn't sound quite right!) Anyway congratulations both of you for all your questions. Few would have guessed if you hadn't told us that you had lost all your original questions in two computer crashes. Mind you, that question about how to spell Hautanen was pushing it a bit. (Did I spell it right?)

Our fifth group:

Our sixth group of contestants was made up of the winners from the five groups:

Finally, our winner: FV. I'm not sure what they gave her for winning here but I know she will be immortalized on a plaque that hangs in the STC. Her name will be added to Lyn's on the plaque. She was the winner of the first trivia contest last year.
Again sorry for the quality of this pic. I had turned my camera off not realizing they would give FV something right away. By the time I got the camera working again she was already headed back to her seat. My settings were all wrong so here is another pic brought back from the dead by Photoshop. But hey! this pic could have been much worse, eh Marika? ;) :funny:

Don't hold your breath Roger, Jussi still hasn't finished his Helsinki concert review :funny: :funny: :funny:
But maybe if I'll stop teasing him he'll surprise us with a taste to come.... like a Cory by the bus pic? For example... you know.. :p
:p
...this kind of reminds me of *THAT* most often asked question during the weekend: "...when is Shania coming to Timmins..?"
answer: "...when she gets here..." :p
...I've still been reading lots of the posts, the web went down on us yesterday, so I haven't had the opportunity to see all that has been written already... don't want to go posting the exact pics and explanations as others have... also, an apology of me making so many silly faces to the cameras: that's me - sorry..! :p
btw, has anyone posted about the hilarious debate between Ren and Will during the Trivia contest, on the question about the tour bus..? ;) :biglaugh:
...a demand for Cory pics..? heh, I should've guessed... :p
...he went explaining with details how one's lips must be apart and have that "faraway eyes"-look to get that "sex god" appearance... :funny:
...man, was I laughing taping this bit... you could hear the girls sighing around him..! :D
...oops..! - I've got a meeting in 5 minutes, so I'll email a few pics to Marika & she can post them here... after she regains consciousness...
John - ;)

Okay now, the Trivia Contest. Here is our trusty quizmaster, Ren. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture. I think my flash didn't go off. But this pose was so priceless I brought this photo back from the dead with the magic of Photoshop.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fancontrivia01.jpgIt's an awesome pic!!!
Tracy was Ren's co-quizmistress (hmm, that doesn't sound quite right!) :funny: :funny: :funny:
Anyway congratulations both of you for all your questions. Few would have guessed if you hadn't told us that you had lost all your original questions in two computer crashes. Mind you, that question about how to spell Hautanen was pushing it a bit. (Did I spell it right?) Must have not been easy coming up with questions just like that!
 Haa!! There was one question I would have known the answer to :funny:
Oh man, Timmins Press keep on misspelling that name over and over!
My settings were all wrong so here is another pic brought back from the dead by Photoshop. But hey! this pic could have been much worse, eh Marika? ;) :funny:

Great stuff John, for those with broadband all my photo's are being hosted meantime free of charge by George and Teri of Timmins Web at:
http://www.timminsweb.ca/shania
There is no captions as yet but I am sure you can work out what is going on from similar photo's on this thread. Each page loads all the images as full sized so be patient for those will a slow connection. You will be rewarded as all the photo's posted are high quality, public domain and the titles pretty well explain each shot.
I did not post photo's of the McIntyre on the Sat night as I was having way way too much fun dancing and singing on Shania's UP! tour stage to bother with a camera.
You can however see the Cedar Medows resort and Uncle Bucks trout farm, Cory JD and the Native drummers, stage, tour bus, Zoo and so on. Enjoy!
...just wait for the video...

We are waiting, we are waiting!! That's all we do, actually! :uhh: :p

The question we argued about was where Shania's bus originated from.
I had heard Lake Placid and he had heard something else.
It all went downhill from there when I discovered that Will was my long-lost brother...

If I remember correctly, I think towards the end of the debate, it went something like this :
Ren: Well, my daddy is bigger than your daddy.....
Will : Well, my daddy IS YOUR DADDY !!!
Then they cry out and run to give each other a big hug on the stage !! It was soooooo funny !!

Hey Roger ! Love this pic of Kay :) :) :) One of the best !!! What was the song where all the ladies had to stand on the chairs ??
Btw, I think Susie Q IS a professional singer..... I can't remember who told me about it, I think it was Chris or Richard......

Thanks for having 'symptoms on us' and telling us the story, Ren and Grace. They say a good picture is worth a thousand words, and that's sometimes true. But a good story behind a picture, is worth a lot more than the picture alone.

Okay, banquet photos.
Here is John. He was so glad they finally found his lost luggage so he could wear this great jersey.

Here is a shot of everyone at table. Actually in an arena 70 people don't take up much space.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconbanquet03.jpg
I didn't take photos of each and every table because I already did that at the Mac and because I saw that Debbie Lemaire was already doing that here.
JD was a great guest. He circulated a long time to make sure he met with everyone there. When he finally sat down to his own meal, everyone else had pretty well finished. Here he is with Bryce.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconbanquet05.jpg

The karaoke finals were next. Here is Kim again.

And here is Colleen again.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconbanquet07.jpg
And here is Ivory who won the karaoke contest. I will have more to say about this special talent in a later post.

I think the highlight of the convention for many of us what was came next. Groups of fans karaokeing (is that a verb?) to Shania songs.

Someone, I think it was you Tom, hoped I had taken pictures of the dancing that followed the karaoke but I'm afraid I didn't. For me there is no greater pleasure than dancing to my favourite music so I laid my camera down for once and enjoyed myself.
I took just one photo of the dancing. Here are Ivory and her mom and dad dancing a slow dance as a threesome. Now it is difficult enough for most people to dance as a couple without stepping all over each other's toes. Here there were three dancing together but they danced in perfect harmony. They must all have a great sense of rhythm. I just thought they were such a cute family.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconbanquet16.jpg
Perhaps if Kay and I had stayed longer we could have taken more dancing pictures. I understand that most people stayed until about 2 in the morning. That is a bit late for oldsters like Kay and me so we missed whatever happened at the end. I hope that next year they can start the dancing a little earlier.

This post is devoted to Ivory Higdon.
When this girl, obviously still in her teens, took the microphone at the Central Tavern's karaoke, I thought to myself "Here is another young fan who is going to sing with much more enthusiasm than ability." Well, boy, was I wrong!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconkaraoke04.jpg
She was very professional. Her voice was great. She had a great sense of rhythm. She was so relaxed in front of an audience she had obviously been doing this for a long time.
I asked around to see if anyone knew who she was and no one did. I later discovered neither she nor anyone in her family had ever posted on any Shania messageboard. In fact, they didn't know any Shania sites. (They do now)
As fate would have it, Kay and I were paired up with Ivory and her mother Joanne for the golf tournament. So in two hours we got to know them. The Higdons live in Field. In my southern Ontario ignorance I had heard the name but had no idea where that is. I now know it is in northern Ontario roughly half way between North Bay and Sudbury. Ivory has been singing since she was a small girl. She sings at as many gigs as she can get and enters as many contests as she can. Does that remind you of someone whose life story we all know? Professionally she goes by just her first name - Ivory.
As those of you who participated in the golf tourney know, JD Blair roamed the course to meet all the fans. At each hole he and Tracy would allow each group a score of just three strokes for that hole, if one of us would sing a Shania song. Well, in our group it was a no brainer. Ivory would sing.
That experience of seeing Ivory singing incongruously in the bright sunshine on the putting green will remain with me forever. She sang as she did in the Zoo - totally unselfconsciously. Her unaccompanied voice was pure, in perfect pitch and full of feeling. She sang all verses so it went on for three or four minutes. Everyone including JD stood there just entranced. Here is Ivory singing:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/3.jpg
Here is JD watching and listening:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/2.jpg
When the karaoke finals began on banquet night, there was no doubt Ivory would be in them. She sang Up! I expected the perfect vocal rendition. I was surprised to see that she had her body language all worked out very precisely - just the right movement to illustrate each phrase - very professional. In short, she blew me away (and I don't blow away easily). So in the end Ivory won the karaoke against some very stiff competition.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/1.jpg
I have left the most remarkable fact about Ivory until the end - her age. Ivory is just 13 years old! She will start high school this fall. She is years too young to compete in Canadian Idol but if that show is still going when she is old enough to compete, those other candidates had better watch out!
What is it about these northern Ontario girls?!

Tell me about it Roger, I am surrounded by them here in Timmins every place I go. Last night was singing night in the Club 147 and the Bar Manager, Tina just blew me away singing Patsy Cline's "Crazy".
The girls here are so awesome, sometimes I think I have died and gone to heaven! :)

Ouch? I take it as a given that almost none of us look as healthy or physically appealing at 58 or 60, as we did when we were 30. So I wouldn't feel hurt myself at such an observation. If you prefer I be more restrained in commenting about such matters, let me know and I'll try to accomodate.

No, no. Your perceptivity is one of your strong points, Bob. Don't try to curb it on my account. I admit I feel old in comparison with most Shania fans, especially on this board. That's my problem and shouldn't impinge on you.

Thanks for clarifying. Sorry I misunderstood.
I'm not sure I'd consider it a problem to feel old. We ARE old, relatively speaking. I guess I do consider the disadvantages at times, especially when frustrated that some of my best skills are now significantly decreased, for example the inability of my eyes to adjust the focus as needed. Presbyopia happens to every human being, starting in their late 40's and getting worse until it bottoms out and stays that way in a person's early 60's. For someone like me, who's primarily visual, instead of verbal or kinesthetic, it's a serious handicap.

Great pics. Thanks :D
Perhaps if Kay and I had stayed longer we could have taken more dancing pictures. I understand that most people stayed until about 2 in the morning. That is a bit late for oldsters like Kay and me so we missed whatever happened at the end. I hope that next year they can start the dancing a little earlier.
Roger
Well you know that is just what is going to happen this year so we get more time on the dance floor, well Ice hocky Rink, What ever...
Great thread Roger and thank you for bringing it back to life with the like across on the official Shania Twain Centre Message Forums site. It is hard to belive this year is going to beat last, but it will TRUST me on that one.
Okay, banquet photos.
...,
Here is a shot of everyone at table. Actually in an arena 70 people don't take up much space.

Roger

Who is the blond person next to Cory (Churko at right)?
That might be Kara, who works at the STC. I'd seen her before, but after she gave me a hug at the convention this year, I may remember better.

I just realized there are almost no photos of Kay and me together. So here is one in front of Derek's and Kelly's Up! bug.

I don't remember their names but they were a couple from Barrie, Ontario who came to fan con with their 2 kids.

Thank you for bringing us up to date about Ivory, Nancy. She looks more mature now. Angele looks as if she is going to be quite beautiful in a few short years. I wonder if Ivory has tried out for Canadian Idol yet?

How nice of you to say that! Well, we weren't bad looking 41 years ago when we were married but time has a way of ravaging that. But we are still the same people inside!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/Finn5/RogerTimmins/fanconbus13.jpg
Yes, that is a rather nice picture. Kay especially looks young there. However both of your faces are in shadows somewhat.
A pro photographer told me a flash takes care of that, but most people don't think to use it outside in the bright sun. I think there's probably also a limit to the distance a flash works, unless you have one of those adjustable flashes.
By the slope of his shoulders and height, I think that might be Charlie at right. I don't recognize the other people in the background. I wasn't there that year. However the posture of the young woman facing the other way with blue top and light tan slacks, seems to fit the pics I've seen of Bianca from Netherlands.

Ahah! Here's another puzzle to identify someone only by their hairline. That looks like Jack Watson blocked mostly out of view and talking with Richard.

Ya that is Bianca. I can tell by her backpack.

Secret? Hmm, how about extreme patience on my part? (Better not tell Kay that!)
Yeah, those socks. Actually, I have a lot of flag socks. I like to wear them abroad. When I do, other Canadians come up to me and say: "Hey, are you from Canada too? I'm from Ingersoll (or wherever)" - a great way to meet other Canadians!

Thanks for the confirmation on Bianca.
The car belongs to Derrick and Kelly, I believe. I met him and had a nice long talk in 2005. Also met him again briefly at 2007 convention. They might have been at some event prior to 2005 convention. I think there have been some ST fan get-togethers at their place in southern Ontario. Roger, Lyn and Frenchy would know more about that.
He builds, modifies or reengineers fire trucks for Fire Departments. Very impressive and likable fellow. Built a covered, aerodynamic trailer, in a style and color to match that Up!-mobile, so she could lay down and rest if needed on the way to Timmins one year, etc. She was recovering from chemotherapy at the time.

Thanks Ren. I saw your reply here a while ago, but was in a rush and did not reply then.
It's always nice to have someone backstopping me, who is good at info like this. I'm beginning to wonder now, if attractive ladies are distracting, and reduce my accuracy in identifying people in pictures.
Thanks for the confirmation on Bianca.

Derek and Kelly have held a couple of BBQs at their place prior to the fan con. Here they are in 2006:

In front seated or kneeling, from left to right =
Roger from Ottawa, Betsy from the Carolinas, Irene from Maryland, Debbie from California, Bonnie from Ontario, Alan fron New York and Andrea from Toronto?.
In back standing =
John and Joanna from Finnland, Ren(?) from Timmins area, Is that Ken (Drum51)?, from California possibly, maybe Corran/Ben from out New Jersey way, Linda B from California, TimminsChris, Tom from Scotland at that time, Jack from California, Chris/cbspock from Long Island, Grace from Great Britain and Richard from Illinois I think back at that time.
I still have the big concert hall poster that Grace obtained from one of the ST concerts in Great Britain that year.
The Senator/Day's Inn front desk is behind Ren, with several wall clocks displaying the time in various places across the continent or world. Farther behind that, is a hallway to the right and Nikki's sportsbar. To the left is a door to the stairway going upstairs to the parking garages, the main ballroom floor and the 7 floors of guest rooms, with the Shania Twain Suite on the 7th floor.
Along the wall to left out of view are manager offices, and this year an online computer for guest use.
Behind Chris and Grace is a short hallway going to office behind the front desk, for main desk and hotel staff.
A little to the right and in front of Andrea and Alan, is another short hallway to the 2 slow elevators. Only one of which goes down to the pool and fitness room. The bedrock of the hillside actually sticks out of the wall on both the inside and outside of the hotel, at this same level as the lobby. So I'm wondering if the pool, is down below bedrock, at the acquifer level, or maybe even down to well depth? I've never timed how long that elevator ride is, going down there.
Behind the camera holder, is an entrance to the taxi pick up area, and Mountjoy St, about 20-30 meters west of Algonquin Blvd./Hwy 101.
Given how easy it is for me to visualize all these things in my mind's eye, I'm wondering if maybe I was a practiced rat running mazes in some psychology lab, in a prior life.
