In the past few days, I had realized how many people visit these forums, read all our messages but do not send anything.
Just wanted to point this out.
You can come to your own conclusions.
Ok, since we are on a statistics topic, I might add we’ve just surpassed 1000 topics on this forum.
Kev, I’ve been writing about this before. I don’t think there are more than 100-150 people who posted here once, but as far as the regular posters are concerned, I don’t think they’re more than 30-40. 30 out of 600 means that 1 person in 20 is showing interest in posting. Quite a small number, I agree. There are some reasons for that, though.

Does the 602 take into account the people who've changed Usernames?
Londo,
Why do you think the count is 20-1 for lightposting vs heavy posting. I'm curious as to your thoughts on this http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif
Jersey Fan,
As an answer to your first question, even if it wasn’t addressed directly to me, I believe they count them too. I don’t think the program that registers users is that complex to search the database to see if the user’s IP is registered with another username. And even if the software would do that search, it would take some time to do it and if a positive match was found, I don’t see a logical reason to stop the user from getting a new username, maybe he’s got good reasons to do that. So I think they’re being counted. Of course the question that arises is how many PERSONS are really here, not usernames. It’s quite hard, if not impossible to be accurate. There could be people with more usernames, but we can know it’s only one person because they have the same IP, but there could be one person that has more IP’s, one for each username and didn’t unsubscribe one of the usernames for some reason. But out of the 600 usernames, I think there are more than 550 people here.
Which brings me to the main question. I’ll try to give some of the reasons, as they pop in my head right now. One is the fact that some people subscribe because they usually do that when they visit a site, cause they’re hoping to receive some things from that particular site, mainly through mail. I didn’t think of this being a serious reason, until a friend of mine came yesterday and asked me to get his mail. I got all kinds of mails (on my own connection cost) from all kinds of sites that he didn’t even remember anything about, just that he subscribed cause he found something interesting. (I thought I was gonna shoot him) So for those people this site is nothing more than one of the hundreds of temporary stops on their perpetual journey on the net. But these are a minority.
Another category is the one of the persons who don’t post for psychological reasons. They came here out of curiosity, but they don’t consider themselves as being such great fans or something and they might feel unwelcome here, but wait for some moment or reason to get on the boards. They wouldn’t want to take the chance of getting into this like outsiders, because they feel the effort of posting doesn’t worth it.
One of the most important reasons (possibly the most important) is the fact that people don’t have the time to do it, to login constantly and express their opinions. This comes related with another aspect that I feel is very important. Once a topic is started, many become “saturated” within a day. This means that the regular posters express their opinions and usually all possible fundamental points of view are being posted. After that, all someone can do is say they agree with one or another of the people who posted, but don’t bring anything new. This is something quite frequent. And when someone visits the forums 3 days after the topic was started, he feels that all the possible views have been expressed and prefers just to read, rather than post in acknowledgement. These kinds of people are quite many, if not in majority, at least in my opinion.
So, in conclusion, I feel that for the majority of those who don’t post, the forums are like a dynamic news center, where they can find not only fresh info about Shania, but also interesting (or not so interesting) points of view about different subjects and therefor they’re quite happy just to read.
I have also a belief that starting different topics, some even off-Shania topics, using for example the open forum (I posted a topic about this about a week ago, btw), may attract some of the people reading. Some of them are not even big Shania fans, so they might feel more comfortable talking about sports or computers, for example.
Maybe I’ll write more when it comes to mind.
Yee, I’ve written a novel again. First time this week. I must be on a maximal biorhythm today. http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif
PS: Jersey, how about updating your profile with a mail address?... http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/wink.gif

I think this is what is happening in a lot of cases where the person only starts sending a few posts because someone has made a reference to them, or that there is something they need to ask or answer.
One example is with may, she posted her first message when someone made a reference to her site.
This seems to a quieter day as far as the posting is concerned. But as a curiosity, we’ve reached 7000 messages on this forum around september 20. Now we have more than 8000 messages. So basically we posted 1000 messages in 2-3 weeks, while 7000 were posted in the whole previous history of the forum. This shows an exponential increase in activity. I wonder if we can keep up the same rate.
Londo, I bet the rate will keep up or increase when her new album comes out, and she starts to make more public appearances. Other then that I would take a wild guess and say definately, or atleast more then likely, well probably, or a definate maybe. Oh, all right I'm not sure http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif
LOL When... That was funny.
If we think of it in pure mathematical terms, it would be impossible to maintain the same rhythm. If I take an exponential function to define the progress of the posts, it would show that in the next week we’ll have to post 1000 messages, then another 1000 in the following 2 days, then 1000 in a few hours, then in minutes, then in seconds and by the end of the year we’ll have to post an infinite messages/second. I’d like to live the day where 1000 messages will be posted in 10 seconds.lol They’ll probably have to redefine the flood control or take it out completely...
I’m probably not making any sense, do I? I agree the posts will increase, but it depends on the number of members, everybody’s spare time and the subjects that would develop as time goes by.
Wow we better start posting a lot if we are going to increase exponentially here Londo lol. It is great to see all the new faces here in the forums http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif

Well in september we had 600 members, now we have 1200. Does anyone know how many were there in January 2000? If the forums started from scratch, it means the rate of subscription was fairly constant, 600 in the first 9 months and 600 in the last 7. I would have thought the rate should have been a little higher, but there is one thing to subscribe and another to post. I wonder how Shania's pregnancy news affected the subscription rate. Not as much as I would have expected, as I can see.

Hello, Marine
I'm not a modorator but I believe i can help you. To be a modorator you have to be selected. There's not like a sign up forum. Right now shaniaforums.com has the maximum number of modorators: Matt-Administrator, Londo, Longshot, manu_georgine, Justin, Armando i think that's all. I think that Matt would allow more, accept that's all the system will do. Who knows! It's basically just his choice. I've wanted to be one FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER! oh well. Hope this helps
