jenn
hmm thanks for sharing this with us Jenn!
Thanks for the info
Here is some more info I found
Pop star Shania Twain plans to farm up to 15,000 merino sheep on her South Island properties and expects to turn the investment into an $800,000-a-year business within two years.
But her business plan did not impress the Overseas Investment Commission much, with officials questioning whether the two rugged high-country sheep stations will ever become viable.
Twain, real name Eileen Regina, and her producer-songwriter husband Robert Lange paid $21.4 million for the perpetual lease of Motatapu Station and Mt Soho Station, near Wanaka.
Documents issued by the commission under the Official Information Act outline Twain's plans to spend a further $3.2 million developing the 24,731-hectare farms.
The couple's business proposal expected that by 2007 the combined sheep station would have a gross annual income of $796,385 and a gross profit of just over $270,000.
"The applicants maintain that they are investing a considerable amount of capital to turn a non-performing farm into a viable economic unit," the documents say.
"The commission questions whether that is actually the case."
The couple's cashflow projections indicated "a low rate of return for the farming operation, which raises questions about whether it really is a viable farming investment".
The business will require six fulltime employees and a further 15 staff over three years to work on development projects.
These include a $1.5 million home for the couple; $250,000 to build woolsheds and sheepyards, $100,000 for shearers' quarters; fencing worth $360,000, and $80,000 on roads and an airstrip.
Twain is the biggest-selling female artist in the past 10 years, selling more than 50 million albums.
The commission originally planned to reject her request to buy the land, saying it did not consider the proposal a "particularly compelling case".
But the deal was later approved after the couple offered to build a public walking track through outer parts of the property.

Could be a hobbie or something?
Its not like she needs the business to make her money.

I think this land was used for sheep farming before. It would be a waste not to continue this activity IMO.
I see the Langes paid $21.4 million not $16 million as previously reported. This is way above the original estimate of $4 million before Shania came along.

Well, when these stories first came out... my initial guess was that she could be planning a complete line of wool clothing... with an emphasis on animal-friendy production... there's a market for those kind of products... remember the modified scarf from the FAFA video..? ;)
New Zealand Merino wool is a major player in performance wear and outdoor clothing with the development of merino wool so fine it is super soft like cashmere. It is naturally stretchy. For those who prefer natural fibers next to their skin.
The merino sheep is noted for its very fine and thick wool. It is a highland sheep and prospers in the cold and windblown mountains of the South Island of New Zealand. Merino Sheep are now been bred for the fineness of the wool fibers and it is found that merino wool becomes super soft when the fiber thickness is under 20 microns.
Imagine the feel of a super soft natural fabric against your skin on a cold wet day. If you have ever used polypropylene long underwear you will notice the difference quickly in that the wool does not smell bad after a hard day on the trail. Polypropylene smells bad because it is plastic and your body is rejecting it. Polypropylene is the most "hyped" product in the world. People actually believe that it "wicks" water away from your skin. It is cheap plastic from Dupont and "wicking" is a gimmick.
If you are interested in natural soft fibers against your skin with true natural performance you can do no better than superfine merino wool. The New Zealand Nature Co. label is called Kermadec Adventure Wear. The name comes from the Kermadec Islands and is synonymous with great adventures.
Our merino wool can be worn as outer or as merino wool long underwear, thermal underwear. The leggings, T-shirts, and long sleeve tops and all fashionable casual garments yet can still be used as performance long underwear or thermal underwear. Merino wool has a natural stretchiness so the leggings can be reasonable loose fitting or tight. The Merino wool T-shirts are meant to be loose fitting casual as are the long sleeve tops. They are made with superfine Merino wool under 18 microns in thickness. The wool fiber is so thin that it bends against the skin rather than pricking the skin as normal wool does. And it is machine washable - easy care.
The Merino Wool Pullover is new. It is pure merino wool and at 300grams per meter weight, it is the natural alternative to plastic polar fleece garments. Polar fleece has some uses, but not if you can use the real thing for a reasonable price. The Kermadec performance pullover is a pure merino wool pullover top and is machine washable. Developed in New Zealand by the New Zealand Nature Co. Check it out along with other unique and natural gifts in our online shop.

...this isn't really a Shania/music-related news item, but ok... :smirk:

MAN, I FEEL LIKE A SHEEP FARMER

Not content with breaking records and world domination on the music charts, Shania Twain is now venturing into the glamorous world of sheep farming. She plans to farm up to 15,000 merino sheep on her South Island properties in New Zealand and hopes to turn her investment into an $800,000-a-year business within two years. Shania's sheep will be tended by six full-time employees and 15 part-time staff over three years. nope, don't worry!! My next trip is already planed to the states; it's 10 yrs since I've been there, so it's about time; Australia and New Zealand are still on my "I-wanna-go-there" list, but I don't think it will be to soon that I'll get there..... so, New Zealand, relax, no need to worry..... :D

That much we owe them.

Yeah. There is a dilemma here. Avid fans want to share info about Shania (even if it is none of our business) but we certainly don't want to place Shania and her family in any danger. I follow the NZ press for the simple reason I have family there. So I do come across Shania related articles. I came across a newspaper article about what the Langes paid for their property and their plans to farm sheep. But I held back posting it out of respect for the Langes' privacy. So what happened is, other people posted similar articles here and elsewhere. Yet that in itself is no big problem. The articles reproduced on messageboards are just copied from NZ newspapers. So in the only place where stalkers can go after Shania, everyone already knows about where Shania is and what she is doing.
Still it is a good idea to think twice before posting anything about Shania's life in NZ or, in fact, anything about her private life at all. When in doubt, don't post, or, ask a mod first.

The press we're not so worried about.
It's what the fans can find out & will share with the world is what keeps us alert.
This is one thing we handle with upmost seriousness.

Yeah, that could be! That would make sense as to why they bought that farm and are going to farm sheep. I wonder if we will ever hear something from Shania about this? I mean...I'm curious:p

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the Motatapu and Soho properties sheep stations to begin with? If so, Shania is just continuing the practice of farming sheep there.
