Shania's nominations for single of the year for the pop version of PF2 and for the fan choice award show that she is not relegated to the country ghetto as she seems to be in the USA. The fan choice award is an indication of how very popular she is in Canada. But in this category she is up against some very heavy hitters: Diana Krall, Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan. I would like to say Shania will win but these other ladies are massively popular too.

Isn't it interesting though that all the nominees for fan choice are women?

Hmmmm, well it beat Shania's record when she hosted. I also noticed that the article said that Bachman fans are boycotting because he hasn't been scheduled to perform. So, have they picked everyone already.....if so has Shania been listed?

According to the article below, Shania is expected to attend this year's Juno Awards.

Raylene Scarrott has always called her debut album, Taken, “God’s album.”

With the response she continues to get, it would have to be.

This former Milo resident has been making her mark on the Canadian Christian music scene for almost one full year and in that time she has received a Covenant Award for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, and had a single sit at number one for weeks on Shine FM, a Calgary Christian radio station.

Now, the crowning achievement for Canadian musicians, Scarrott has been nominated for a Juno award which are to be presented in Winnipeg, Man., Apr. 1 to 3.

“I am so excited to go to Winnipeg,” said Scarrott.

“It is such an honour to have this work recognized at such a musically important event.”

She has received her nomination for contemporary Christian/gospel album of the year.

Already getting Juno fever, Scarrott will have her award presented on Apr. 2, the night before the televised awards show.

She is planning to attend that night as well with hubby, Kevin to enjoy being with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain who are all expected to be present.

There are some big names in Christian music that Scarrott is up against for the award.

Red Letterz by Fresh I.E., Living Water by Aileen Lombardo, Here to Stay by Greg Sczebel and Phenomenon by Thousand Foot Krutch will be her competition.

Scarrott was impressed at how diverse the nominees musical styles were noting there is “something for everyone,” on this year’s list for the award.

For more information on Raylene Scarrott or to listen to a sample of her music you can visit her website at www.raylenemusic.ca

Bizarre marriage of Housewives, Junos
Don't be surprised if Ben Mulroney pops up in the middle of your fave soap on Sunday

By BILL BRIOUX - Toronto Sun

Do not adjust your set: That really is Ben Mulroney talking to Randy Bachman in the middle of Desperate Housewives.

What's up with that? That's the question a lot of Canadians will be asking Sunday when CTV goes through with its evil plan to meld a half-hour pre-Junos red carpet show into the body of their red hot ABC import, Desperate Housewives.

Housewives has been a ratings machine all season, creaming everything in its path Sunday nights. In the U.S., low ratings for everything from The People's Choice Awards to The Grammys has been partially blamed on the amazing drawing power of the girls from Wisteria Lane.

After a month of re-runs, fans have been panting for new episodes. Last week's original was watched by 2,209,000 Canadians (ranking No. 7 for the week) and 24.08 million Americans (No. 2).

CTV, which has gotten fat off the series all season, suddenly has a problem: How to maximize their annual Canadian music industry salute on a Sunday night without ditching its sizzling Yankee import? Further, how to wedge in, and score with, a cheap-to-produce, highly profitable red carpet show in the same mix?

Their brazen solution: Run a 90-minute Housewives/red carpet show starting Sunday at 7 p.m., followed by a half-hour tape-delayed Junos at 8:30 p.m.

To some viewers, it will feel as if your favourite show has been tossed into a Cancon blender. You'll get four or five minutes of Nicollette Sheridan in short-shorts cutting directly to Mulroney hanging with k-os. A bunch of commercials (including endless Canadian Idol hype) followed by Eva Longoria seducing some gardener, slamming straight into Tanya Kim asking Juno host Brent Butt who he is wearing.

It's a radical move simply because, in my memory, no Canadian broadcaster has ever taken such a cut and paste approach to one of its hit U.S. imports.

What would Housewives' creator and executive producer Marc Cherry think? Does he even know? Calls from the Sun to the normally friendly folks at ABC, Disney and Buena Vista International requesting interviews on this subject were all shut down or ignored. You'd think I was calling about Alberta beef or softwood lumber, instead of a TV show. Nobody wanted to start a Desperate Housewives cross-border brouhaha.

A CTV publicist called back to point out that not a frame will be lost or juggled in the translation, but admitted it will take you 90 minutes to watch an hour-long show. That is significantly altering the original producers' vision and intent. Imagine sticking 30 minutes of Phil The Alien into Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. It would not make Clint's day.

The good news is that if you want to avoid this Desperate dog's breakfast, you can. Simply watch it at its usual time, 9 p.m. on ABC -- uninterrupted.

Normally, this would be a nightmare scenario -- CTV's Juno broadcast gets burned by a show it owns airing on another network.

But expect The Junos and CTV's bloated Desperate Housewives/red carpet package to do well Sunday. Lead-in Housewives will boost The Junos beyond last year's total (1.5 million), despite a lacklustre talent lineup. (Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne are all taking the year off. Even presenter Dan Aykroyd ditched this week.) Then there's that horrible Party Of Two song.

You can't blame CTV for trying to maximize their reach. They saw how their Oscar red carpet show got lost last February when it was stranded in front of a Barbara Walters special. Why settle for 500,000 viewers when you can claim 1.5 million?

But, if this works, where will it lead? Will other U.S. imports be fodder for future red carpet shows? If CTV can get away with it, what is to stop CHUM or Global?

Bottom line, this desperate ratings ploy makes no sense for viewers. Stop the insanity. Watch Desperate Housewives at 9 p.m. on ABC Sunday.

BBM Canada says they will count the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. totals separately (normally the Canadian carrier scoops the U.S. station take on a simulcast). Those ABC affiliate overnights will be under extra scrutiny Monday. Last I checked, my remote still punched as high as channel 17.

This isn't a simulcast. It isn't a simul-anything.

Thanx for the info, Tommy. Well, I am not pleased. I did watch one episode of Desperate Housewives just to see what all the fuss was about. It was not as bad as I had imagined but it does not interest me at all. I am not willing to sit through all the Desperate Housewives stuff just to see snippets of the red carpet so I will just tune in to the Junos. Or maybe I won't even do that. If Shania is not there, I can probably find something more interesting to do than the Junos.

The TORONTO SUN is a right wing , anti CBC , anti Canadian culture news paper.

I guess it is the price for living in CANADA and promoting Canadian culture , such as the JUNO AWARDS.It gives, CANADIANS JOBS.

The SUN feels that Canadians should have everything that the U.S. has , but with no price at all.

Life , just isn't like that. BOO HOO.....Canadians are so spoiled.

They are NOT . There are so many awards that they have to be given out Saturday and Sunday [which is on T.V.]

The fans choice, single of the year will be awarded SUNDAY NIGHT, ON T.V. :D

Nothing surprising here.
Party For Two did much better on the general charts rather than on the country charts in Canada.

The Fan Choice will go to Lavigne most likely, and she won't get single of the year neither.

Thats' life, she can't always win.

New blood

Avril, Diana and Shania will be no-shows, so the Junos will get infusion of new talent tonight

By JANE STEVENSON, Toronto Sun
Sun, April 3, 2005

ON THE surface, tonight's Juno Awards in Winnipeg (CTV, 8:30 p.m.) would seem to be lacking some serious star power. The event's most celebrated artists -- five-time nominated pop-rock queen Avril Lavigne and quadruple nominee jazz-pop crooner/pianist Diana Krall -- are both touring and unable to attend.

But their absence, and that of high-profile triple nominee Shania Twain, who is on a two-year break after last year's release of her greatest hits collection of country-pop, will more than be made up for.

For starters, there's a newer crop of refreshingly original talent that includes triple nominees such as hip-hop hybrid star k-os and sophisticated pop crafter Leslie Feist, who are also both slated to perform on the Juno show.

"I'm ecstatic about someone like Leslie Feist, that's the real story, to me," said k-os. " 'Cause that album (Let It Die) is sickening. It's wicked. Sickening in a good way. It's like one of my favourites."

BRAIN ANEURYSM

Which doesn't mean that k-os was not waxing poetic before the show about the expected appearance of a rock elder like Neil Young, which was later cancelled due to Young's health.

Young was expecting to make good on a promise to perform at the Junos if they were ever held in the Manitoba capital, but was unexpectedly felled by a brain aneurysm, it was learned Friday. He was recovering at home and was forced to cancel his Juno gig, and is expected to make a full recovery.

"You don't understand, you don't understand," k-os said excitedly. "That guy (Young), he's a folk artist, but I also see him like a reggae artist, I also see him like a hip-hop artist because he's just hard-core.

"And he's always stuck to his guns. What a career."

Randy Bachman of The Guess Who fame threatened to create this year's biggest Juno controversy over his initial unhappiness at not also being asked to hit the Juno stage. Organizers eventually announced Bachman and his Guess Who bandmate Burton Cummings would headline a tribute to Winnipeg's homegrown acts on tonight's telecast.

Folk-pop singer-songwriter Ron Sexmith, a double nominee, who has attended the Junos the past four years, said making the music awards a travelling event was the best thing that organizers ever decided to do.

The Junos, typically held in Toronto, Hamilton and even Vancouver in the past, have been on the road since 2002, with stops in St. John's, Nfld., Ottawa and Edmonton.

The 2006 festivities will be held in Halifax.

Sexsmith was looking forward to travelling to The Peg.

'ROCK CITY'

"Winnipeg's kind of an important city in Canadian music and it's a real kind of rock city. The Guess Who and Neil Young spent some time there," he said. "But I just think it brings the nation together and makes everyone feel a little more proud I guess."

Even younger artists, such as singer-pianist Sarah Slean who is a single nominee and presenter, said just the act of getting all of Canada's music industry in one city for a weekend -- the first 31 Junos were handed out last night during a non-televised gala -- is inspirational.

"It always lights me on fire with the desire to go home and make more music and make better music and it's nice to see so many people in this country making interesting, original art," said Slean. "And it just keeps getting better and better. The diversity every year and the quality is skyrocketing."

Pop-R&B rising star Keshia Chante, a 16-year-old Ottawa native who is a double nominee and a presenter, was particularly psyched about her best new artist nod. That and getting to pick out clothes for tonight's show.

"I am the big spender. I love to shop. Just clothes in general. I'm a girl. I'm 16. C'mon! This is huge for me, figuring out what to wear."

Less appealing was Winnipeg's lingering low temperatures despite it being April.

"I know that whole area is very, very cold," she said.

"I'm very against winter, considering I love Canada."

2 year break???!!!! Yikes that sounds like a long time but most likely true and she is just doing appearances/ charity appearances and no singing until then.

Yeah well that depends on the start of those 2 years.... is it from her last studio album? From her last tour? From her GH album? From last/this year?

Anyhow, I think she'll be back next year....:)

k.d. lang. Wow oh wow! Physically attractive she is not. And she has piled on a ton of weight. She has a face as hard as any man's and is so butch.

And yet, and yet..

She has the heart of a poet and the voice of an angel! Can she perform! Her performances alone justified watching the Junos.

Don't worry. It is just one win, she has a long way to achieve all that Shania has.

And one of those things, is style of her own. I liked her punky style before (being a young is sort of suited her, all that anger and rebellion), but recently she has turned more to pop princess category, where are too many girls coming and going for me to keep track on whose "the one" at the moment.

And that is only sad IMO. But she is still young.

I do hope that it will be the first and last time that Avril will be winning over Shania. Its so hard to accept.

It seems the Junos were even more unlucky than I realized. All evening I was wondering: where is Chantal Kreviazuk? She, like Neil Young, is from Winnipeg. She has a lovely voice and is equally lovely to look at - surely an huge asset at any Junos held in Winnipeg. Well, it seems she is seven months pregnant and cancelled out at the last minute.

Carolyn Dawn Johnson was there to make a presentation. I noticed she was quite pregnant.

Oh, Keith Urban was there too. He was not pregnant! :p

I think it means a 2 year break from the Juno's....lets face it, they wouldn't know how long Shania is going to be gone between albums.
