Don't know if this has been posted before, but how many languages can you speak, understand, read or understand? Just curious about the members here as there are many I know can speak several languages.
Well I was raised with 3 languages: German, Italian and Spanish. I can do whatever I want with those languages as they are my native languages.
Later I learnt English, and I can do fine with it, but not perfect :(
I can understand some Dutch, but never got interested in it, and I can read it :
I can read and understand Portuguese as it's very similar with Spanish, and it's way to easy for me, but I can't write it :(
And I can understand and read, and even speak some Latin, but I'm not good writing it :p
And finally I'm learning French right now, not really interested but my wife wanted me to do it.
So how about you?

BTW, I never intended to mean I can speak Dutch, Portuguese, Latin or French perfectly, but I know I wouldn't starve in Holland, Brazil or Portugal or France :p

...and Finnish isn't a Scandinavian language at all - no similarities with the Danish/Norwegian/Swedish-language group whatsoever...

umm... no. Finnish is even less Russian/Slavic than Scandinavian...

Geographical distribution of Finno-Ugric
Finno-Ugric languages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_language)
It's birth origins go back to 5000 BC and because of the last Ice-Age, the language group called Indo-European, were divided into Celtic, Germanic, Slavic and Baltic languages... because of Finland's remote location, our language developed into a completely different direction (apart from Hungarian) called Baltic-Finnic, that breaks down to:
Estonian
Finnish (including Meänkieli or Tornedalen Finnish, Kven Finnish, and Ingrian Finnish)
Izhorian (Ingrian) — Nearly extinct
Karelian - Karelian proper - Lude (Ludic, Ludian) - Olonets Karelian (Livvi, Aunus, Aunus Karelian, Olonetsian)
Livonian (Liv) — Nearly extinct
Veps (Vepsian)
Võro (Voro, Võru, Voru) - Seto (Setu)
Votic (Votian, Vod) — Nearly extinct
The greatest barrier to learning Finnish is the Finns - they will insist on speaking such depressingly good English ! :p

well, I speak, read, write and understand Icelandic(my native), English and Danish.
then I can read and understand, Norwegian and Swedish and Faorese, but I wouldn't say I speak them, though I'd be just fine in those countries trying to verbalize in them.
Oh yeah I can't forget the good Old Norse
I dont really count Spanish and French as something I can do yet. I've learn Spainish for 1 and 1/2 term, so I ought to know a bit(but I didnt really learn that much in class). The french I've only done 1 term and can only make symple sentences.
I can read/write/understand English and most Spanish. :)

Maybe you just needed a break from it? That's what happened with me and German. I had it for 7 years, was pretty good at it, but in the end I got really tired of it... but now I'd like to refresh it.
Sometimes its like that, school doesn't teach it in an interesting way, so you don't care until you leave school. I was like that with Maths, but now I'm back at school as a teacher and I hate it again! (Nobody heard me say that, OK?)...... ;)
I speak, read and write English and French. I have now forgotten all my German and Russian.
I can speak, write, read and understand Polish, English, Spanish and to some extent German, although speaking might be hard, hehe :D I can also read Portugese and some Italian, but that's only because I know Spanish and I would never be able to produce a sentence in those languages. I used to take Latin and Old English in college and those are fun!! LOL But I'm not sure I remember more than 20 words from each :D
