I'll do Sheffield, it's where I live most of the time! There's a lot of things to do there.......

OK Sheffield is in the north of England, most famous for making steel. Chances are your knifes, forks and spoons are from there! Its ok, you don't have to check.... ;) :funny: These days there's less industry, it is the 4th biggest city in the UK. It has 2 universities.......there are around 40,000 students and lots of pubs, clubs and places to eat probably for our benefit!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/map.jpg

Sheffield has lots of galleries, museums and visitor attractions.

The City Centre, all very new and modern, (yes people do run in and out of the fountains) :

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/goodwin.jpg

Ski village (never actually been myself):

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/skislope.jpg

Meadowhall, a shopping centre. Locals call it Meadowhell, although being a guy its easy having everything together and some cool shops. Sorry I don't have a better pic, luckily for you this is a "free sample", normally you have to pay to see a pic of it!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/oasis.jpg

There are 2 football teams (I don't support any of them), an international athletics arena, Hallam FM arena (hockey and concerts):

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/6120arena.jpg

Shania concert inside:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/Sheffield9304009.jpg

Nice countryside, next to the Peak District National Park. Famous places such as Chatsworth house.....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/peak26a.jpg

Sheffield is England's greenest city, apparantly! It has largest temperate glasshouse in a European city centre:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/winterg.jpg

Famous People:

Michael Palin (Monty Python & travel programmes)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/michael.bmp

Lesley Garrett (Opera singer)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/lesley.jpg

Def Leppard
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/hrh_deflep03.jpg

(The Human League are also from Sheffield, "Don't you Want Me Baby....")

Sean Bean (actor)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/seanbean.jpg

Films: The Full Monty

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/handsup.jpg

My Uni:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/shu.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/melmanshania2/Sheffield/uni.jpg

Why do they always show students sitting on grass? :funny: I never do that, its usually wet.....

OK that took ages! But nice idea for a thread....

I live in Rosyth (sorry no pics.) Which is in Dunfermline which is in Scotland. Rosyth is a small village with about 10,000 people currently living there but there is rapid expansion of houses. One of the 7 wonders of the world - The Forth Rail Bridge - is about 1K away from Rosyth. Rosyth doesn't have many facilities, a few pubs, community center and some shops. Rosyth is called the 'Garden City' which was for the Navy Dockyard workers. The Royal Navy Dockyard was used as a main port for both World Wars.

... and that's about it. Again sorry for no pics.

okey I live in Reykjavík, this is pretty much

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, it contains just about halff the icelandic nation. The city is located at the south-west part of the country. It's the norhtest capital in Europe if not just in the world.
We have 3 hospitals one of the Catholic. They just reccently united as the State hospital.

this church is the higest building in the country, the statue infront is of Leifur Heppni Eiríksson(Lucky Leif). He "found" America and that's why he was lucky, but unfortunetly he lost it again.

Swimming pool, Laugardalslaug, the largest swiming pool in the country and probably the best too. it's all out-dours, the main one is in olympic length but it also has childrens pool and a big and fun water slide, along with 6 hot-tubs and a sauna. Most pools here are outdoors and all are geothermal pools.

That's a good point Bob... :smirk:
Really interesting to read Paul and Ulla!

I live in Didam, a little village in the east of the Netherlands.
http://www.puddingonline.com/~dave/presentations/2003-07-25_BGP-Table-manners/bgp_table_manners.key/daar-ligt-didam.png

Didam counts around 11.000 inhabitants and it's part of the municipality: 'Montferland'.

As you can see it's really close to the German border, that's one of the reasons why you see many German's over here, and why the German language had influence in the dialect we speak over here called 'Achterhoeks'.

Because of the small size of my village, there aren't many facts about it. That's why I'll tell you more about the region were it belongs to.
Very famous of this region is it's nature and culture.
Some pics of Didam and it's region:

the only 'high' school of Didam (I'm not on this one anymore) :

Very nearby is the nature reserve 'de Veluwe':

Ah that reminds me that I have another question jajaja. Well as I told you I will arrive at Liverpool and we will rent a car. I will spend my first night there in Carlisle. There´s something about a park and lakes or something like that :funny: between Liverpool and Carlisle, I mean we have to take the road (M-6 if my memory is ok now.. :uhh: ) but we have read that at weekends that lakes are crowded and we are arriving at 17.30 on Friday. Do you know if use to be a lot of traffic jam? *me and my weird questions*:nono:

Well, to get from Liverpool to Carlisle you go to the top of the Lake District but it is all motorway and you miss out all the lakes, so there won't be any problems with traffic.......BUT if you can, then go to the lakes because its the most beautiful part of the UK, its really lovely. There's nothing at all in Carlisle........if you do go to the Lakes it does get very busy but you'll love it!

Hope that helps!

We have a company in Sweden called Avesta-Sheffield, their business is also steel, mostly stainless steel.
But as with all other companies in Sweden, I think the Finns bought it, :p If I try to find it I ends up in Esboo, Finland  :p
Don´t know how much it has to do with Sheffield nowdays though.

:funny: ....Hey, I thought Swedes have bought all Finnish companies, so we're even :p

:funny: ...Outokumpu?

HISTORY OF THE UK COMPANY

The UK based businesses of Outokumpu Stainless were originally part of British Steel. In 1992 British Steel Stainless merged with the Swedish stainless steel producer, Avesta, to form Avesta Sheffield. In 2001 Avesta Sheffield merged with Outokumpu Steel to form AvestaPolarit. At that time the main shareholders were Outokumpu Oyj with 55% and the Corus Group with 23%. In 2002 Outokumpu Oyj acquired all the Corus Group shares and eventually all remaining shares; AvestaPolarit became an Outokumpu Group company. In 2004, as part of the Group's rebranding process, AvestaPolarit was renamed Outokumpu Stainless.

It appears you are both to blame. :funny:

The steel bull is really cool! They have one in Avesta as well, it´s located only 70km from where I live. Too bad they took it away in Sheffield :smirk: They have also moved the one in Avesta to a place where it´s more "hidden" but still visable from the road.

This is my town, Bolton :)

This is our town hall

http://www.bolton.org.uk/boltonth.jpg

http://www.lowefoto.com/konica/bolton01.jpg

The original town hall was opened on June 5th 1873 by HRH Prince Albert of Wales. The first recital of the great organ in the Albert Hall was on October 21st 1874.
Bolton Town Tall was wrecked by fire on November 14th 1981. This destroyed the original, (old) Albert Hall, but the rest of the building was saved. This was rebuilt into the new Albert Halls and Festival Halls, which are several function rooms. It also houses the central tourist information and information centre and ticket office.

This is a little clip of my college :) - its just the entrance I cant find any other pics

http://www.bolton-sfc.ac.uk/Images/New%20Build%201.jpg

About 20mins drive away from the urban part of Bolton is Rivington.

http://www.bolton.org.uk/ruin.jpg

http://www.bolton.org.uk/lccu.gif

http://www.bolton.org.uk/yarof.gif

Rivington is just north of Horwich. The river Douglas stars in Rivington and then heads south through Wigan.

http://www.bolton.org.uk/botb2.jpg

This is the great house barn just off Rivington Lane, the design is Scandinavian, and dates speculated are between 811 A.D. and 1300 A.D. with major renovation in 1702. The roof is spectacular with an internal oak framework. Today it contains a tourist information centre and a cafe.

On the other side of Horwich heading out of Bolton is the Reebok stadium the home of Bolton Wanderers FC :D

This are the two towns I've lived in the most over the years. Starting out with Dawson Creek where it all started for me.Dawson Creek B.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawson_Creek,_British_Columbia)

I see they changed the flag too.

I've also posted a link for Edmonton. I'm really suprised by the pictures specially the one from Black Friday- when a tornado ripped through the city's east end. They have a really nice picture of the High Level Bridge which is the worlds highest man-made water fall. Edmonton Alberta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton,_Alberta)

I've posted a picture of the waterfall in action.

Because I don't want to hit you with so many words I will post some pictures first. Maybe I will write a few sentences later... if there's something you should now about :D But now some pictures...

Wilhelmshaven is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated at the western coast of the Jadebusen which is a bay of the North Sea.
Population: approx. 89,000 (1999) It is a relatively young city by German standards. In need of a naval base for Prussia's developing fleet, Prussian king Wilhelm I who gave the city his name founded the town in 1869. Wilhelmshaven grew to become one of the most important German ports. The duchy of Oldenburg benefited as well from the port; adjacent to Wilhelmshaven the town of Rüstringen was founded on the Oldenburgian territory. Wilhelmshaven and Rüstringen were merged in 1937. During World War II the city, which had been a main operating base for the German navy, was bombed by Allied air attacks; two thirds of the town's buildings were destroyed.
After the war the harbour was used not only for military purposes, but for economy and tourism as well. Today, Wilhelmshaven is Germany's main naval base at the North Sea again. It is also the third largest German port (after Hamburg and Bremen) with mainly oil products being loaded and unloaded. Besides the military, chemical industries and a refinery are the main employers of Wilhelmshaven which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the western part of Germany. The oil terminal and the refinery are connected with other German industrial centres by pipelines.

Economical hopes rest in three major development projects:

* the JadeWeserPort project for a deep water container port to be constructed 2005 - 2010, capable to even berth the largest container vessels presently under construction
* the further development of the chemical industry
* the proposed coastal highway (Küstenautobahn) connecting north-western German industrial centres at the Elbe, Weser, and Ems rivers.

In Wilhelmshaven there is the German Navy Museum, an aquarium with native animals from the North Sea, the information centre of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The town's landmark is the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke ("Emperor Wilhelm Bridge"), which crosses an inlet of the Jadebusen. It was built in 1908; with a length of 159 m it was once the greatest swing bridge of Europe. Harbour area and Navy Museum

Looks like a fine job on Sheffield, Paul.

Nice mix of pics and focused descriptions.

The topo map of England, locating Sheffield is better than many I see.

Now this next one below has me intrigued. Is the Meadowhall shopping center inside that hill? On top of the hill?
On the others side of the hill? Or on the other side of the camera?

And you plunked in a Shania Concert wide angle. Gotta throw those ST fans a bone every now and then.

I like this panoramic vista. So relaxing on my eye muscles, and enjoyable to my perspective.

okey I live in Reykjavík, this is pretty much

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, it contains just about halff the icelandic nation. The city is located at the south-west part of the country. It's the norhtest capital in Europe if not just in the world....,

What an intriguing shape for a building!
http://www.myblumberg.com/Iceland/Church%20large.jpg

2 old and 1 new Icelandic naval ships scared the Brits? Was that the
Brit fisher boats, or the Brit Navy? I must not have heard about that
cod war.
http://www.briankohl.com/photogallery/images/fullsize/iceland-reykjavik-dracar.jpg

This is a really pretty picture of a seacost community. I was very surprised that it's
labelled "winter" in Iceland. There is hardly any snow. But I did notice in a later pic,
the snow was quite a bit deeper.

Ah, the hotel "Borg." I wonder if any of the space sci-fi writers got their ideas from
visiting here.

Oh, so dark!! I love that low light off the snow in the far north in winter.
But I love it only in memory, mostly. I was much younger when I actually lived in it.
And I probably didn't like that tough weather so much at the time. Milking cows at
40 below zero, loading up the truck, then delivering bottles door-to-door for 2+ hrs.
Brrrr!

Enjoyed your write-up Ulla. Thanks for sharing.

This is my town, Bolton :)

...,
About 20mins drive away from the urban part of Bolton is Rivington.

Rivington is just north of Horwich. The river Douglas stars in Rivington and then heads south through Wigan.

I love old castles.

This is the great house barn just off Rivington Lane, the design is Scandinavian, and dates speculated are between 811 A.D. and 1300 A.D. with major renovation in 1702. The roof is spectacular with an internal oak framework. Today it contains a tourist information centre and a cafe.
...,

Well, I spent a lot of my younger years, growing up in a barn. So I knew them well.
But I never saw one like that.

*sigh* You guys live in such beautiful places... my city seems boring in comparison.
Hmn...,

I wonder what Yoda would say to that?

Yep, they do have some beautiful pictures. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And home is where the heart is.

Also scarcity often increases value. Most people live in large urban areas now.
Europe has about ten times higher population density than the U.S. And even in the U.S.
it is getting harder and harder to find people who grew up on farms or in small towns.

Here is what I've learned about folks from "boring" small towns and farms. They tend to be
the most resourceful and reliable ones. Because they don't have so much handed to them
on a silver platter, and because they aren't so specialized, they usually have experience
in a wider range of chores, tasks, etc. So they tend to have wider practical perspective
about solving problems with a positive attitude. They are less likely to have problems with
large egos, from practicing at being in the spotlight, or competing to be a big fish in a big pond.

In short, they're as likely as anyone, to help make the world a better place, rather than
a more aggressive and war-like place. Shania Twain is but one example. She was a little
bit embarrassed about her home town life when she was younger too. But she has blossomed
beautifully from there. And now she feels blessed and grateful to have come
from rather humble background.

If you don't live in a city, could you tell us what you do live in?

wow amazing.. I got the same thoughts as you had Annette,
my place seems like a boring place compared to all the great pictures of your places! :p
Those pics of Spain are impressive, I agree. I flew thru Spain on my way out of Europe
many years ago. Now I see some of what I missed in that country. That palace all
lit up in the night was one of my favorite pics in that bunch.

However, it's not the pics of places built by others that make a place great to live in.
Rather it's what each individual does, to create value in their own life, their family,
community and indirectly in the world.

Saddam Hussein built lots of great palaces too, much of it by stealing money intended for others.
Pictures of his palaces did not make life great for very many people in his country.

The city hall. A lot of tourists think it's a chateau :p .
Maybe they think it's a chateau, because they love to imagine living in such a home. Pretty pic.
I wouldn't want to cut the grass though.

The big fountain is 180 feet high.

Wow, that's higher than "Old Faithful" geyser in Yellowstone National Park, in N America.

That was my short introduction, I hope you like it :p .
Yes I did.

Dankeschön
