I found a little trip story I had sent to a friend from my US trip back in 2000.
(Driving around and ending up in the Formula One race in Indy.)

We flew to Chicago O´Hare airport.

First day we drove to Springfield just to spend the night there. Because of the time difference we all woke up really early, I think I woke up around 3.30am, lol. Later found out that about the same time some of us had also woken and gone for a drive around. I was angry cause I didn´t see them and I went back to bed but just tossed around.. It was still dark when we headed to a cafe to get breakfast. You should have seen the faces of that cafe workers when 34 of us showed up. The waiter was mumbling to another something about a bus load of people, lol. That was hilarious.
We had rented 5 suvs. About 7 people per car.
Well we then drove to St.Louis and visited the arch. Boy it´s big! Did you know it was designed by a Finn!? Some of us rode to the top, but I with 2 friends walked around the city for a while.
We continued to drive towards Memphis, it was dark when we got there, it had been a long drive that day.. Fortunately I had taken some driving instructions from maps.yahoo.com because in Memphis trying to find the motel was difficult for many, but not for us! It was really warm and HUMID down there.
In the morning we drove to Graceland. Then some of us (2 cars) drove to Memphis downtown and visited Mud Island, and also Sun Studios etc. Unfortunately it was really late when we arrived in Nashville. The main street there, everything closed up 10pm, unbelievable. Well, the Wildhorse Saloon was just around the corner, and I managed to lure the others to go in for a while. Joe Diffie was there to perform.
Next day we drove to Indianapolis, stopping in the Corvette Museum.
Our car headed into Crawfordsville, near Indianapolis.
From there we visited Indy downtown on Friday. Sat and Sun were spent at the Indianapolis Speedway for the Formula One race.
Monday morning we drove up to Chicago to fly home...

Yes, Carley when I look at the classic film Casablanca, I was there in the late 1980's and it did not look all that much different. They still have a Rick's American Cafe'.

I was in Australia as a minor with my Dad who was an officer in the Royal Air Force, we stayed in Sydney, Darwin, Alice Springs and Elizabeth near Adelaide.

David

Not quite customs, but my 3rd visit to Timmins was in late March of 2002, and up until this I travelled often wearing the Scotish National dress, the Kilt.

I had flown from Edinburgh International wearing it to Toronto Pearson and was on the last short hop, an internal flight on a little Dash 8 to Timmins.... What could go wrong?

Conversations at Security as best I remember....

Security: I am sorry Sir but have you any metal on you?

Lady I am so full of metal you would not belive it.... My Sporan alone has about 5 ounces of silver plate....

Security: I am sorry Sir, but I must ask you to take off that whatever you called it 'thing' and put it through the X-Ray machine....

Lady, if I do that my Kilt may fall down, and you don't want that - trust me.. besides I can't get to the buckle as it is behind me....

Excited female in the Q behind me "I have never undressed a Scotsman before, I will help you take it off..... - I blush a lot, my Sporan comes off and goes through the X-Ray machine.... I am now holding my Kilt up with one hand.

I fail the security scan....

Security: Sir have you ANY OTHER metal on you.....

Yes, my dear - my garters have a metal clip which holds up my long socks and I am also wearing safety boots with steel toe caps...

Security: I am sorry Sir, but would you please take off your Shoes and Socks and put them through the X-Ray machine.

I do as I am told..

I am standing there with a T Shirt - Bare foot with my Kilt in a public - a very public place with the Q getting bigger and bigger behind me and the 'helpful' girl behind me is being more 'helpful'.

As a true Scotsman, I am wondering what else is going to happen as I FAIL the metal detector gate for the THIRD Time.... If anything else is removed I am in deep, deep trouble.

Security: Have you any metal under there, pointing to my Kilt... If so you will have to wait until I get a male companion to search you.

My face is the same colour as a London Double deck Bus and I am struggleing to think of anything metal left... T Shirt.... Kilt..... ME! - Ah my little Skean Dhu - (Down Girls, it is NOT what you think but a tiny 6 inch Pin in the shape of a Dagger - it serves no purpose, but does prevent your kilt falling apart...) I tell her it is plastic with metal plate and she examines it very closely.

Security: I am sorry Sir you can not fly with that, since 9/11 that is classed as a dangerous Weapon....

If you think that is Dangerous my Dear you want to see what I have under this kilt... and if you force me to remove my tiny plastic Skean Dhu, you may well, for I will be showing more Thigh than is legal in a dozen countries I can think off.

PS... Customs and Security won and kept my Silver plated Pin... worth over $120. I flew on to Timmins showing more leg than is decent. I have never flown in the Kilt since..

Just recently when we were in Canada, in Niagara Falls, and having just come out of a couple stores, the Hard Rock Cafe, and Hershey's chocolate shop ( :D ), and were passing the entrance to the Rainbow Bridge that crosses over to US side, I had a thought that perhaps we could go over to see the Hard Rock Cafe on the other side, if they have the shirts I had been hunting down in 2 Hard Rocks in Toronto and one in Niagara Falls Canada side but they didn't have any. So off we go and crossed the bridge. Canadians breezed through the customs, but we had to fill in the green forms, and then wait and wait till one officer called us to process us. Yep, the fingerprints and pictures etc etc, seemed to take forever. I was kinda wondering how my story of why I'm going to US would sound like... officer, I just want to go over to the Hard Rock Cafe to see about shirts :uhh:
Anyways, after going through all the security measures, and after paying 6 dollars, they let us through (without even searching our bags :uhh: ).
So, after a 5 minute walk we arrive at the Hard Rock Cafe, and yes! they have the shirts I was looking for :D
So, after having spent an hour at customs, and 10 minutes on the other side, we were kinda ready to go back :funny: ...but we did go over to see the Falls from the US side too, just to spend some more time there :p
When we went back to Canada, the customs took like 30 seconds :p

That is quite a list for one so young. Please tell more.

I've been traveling with my parents a lot, and also with friends, so i started really young, It's a pity, 'cus i should go back to really remember what it was like :P But you've been so many places, i'd love to do that, tho i'm glad i'm not a saylor. With all due resepect, it's just not my thing, and besides, you cant come into the military when you're gay (not considering 'going back into the closet')

My favourite places are Sweden, Italy, China and France. Sweden is a huge relaxation, it's like all your worries are just fading away. Only for the food i'd move to Italy (if it wasn't for my boyfriend living there), and besides the food, i love the shops the people, the language... Yeah, next year i'll be moving :D. China is great 'cus everything is dirt cheap, and i've go really nice family over there. Also the food is great. Guilin is one of my favorite cities. And France, have to be there at least one time a year Lille is great, but Paris is my favourite city. I LOVE PARIS, i've been there like 15 times, since it's only 4 hours driving, shopping, musea, and oh, i skip all the tourists spots 'cus i really don't like mass tourism stuff.

I never got trouble at customs, especially 'cus here in the EU the borders arn't guarded. When i went back from China, the costums man started speaking french to me, luckely i could out-do him. I love speaking french, i make up these nonsense lines like "Ce verre vert à vin de vin coûte quatre-vingt-dix-neuf francs français et quatre-vingt-dix-neuf centimes". French people look so wierd at me when i say that :P

You can watch some pictures i made in Sweden and China on my website, www.mixkula.it.tt, i hope y'all like them

I always thought merchants would go to only the same place with their boats, ok, i really don't know anything about that. I wouldn't even try to make someone gay, it's useless, and rape is always wrong, and pointless. Life on a ship seems very lonely to me, anyway.

It can be, but seldom is, I am sure you have seen the Film "Band of Brothers"... after a few months a Ship's crew become just that. You are correct in that some sailors do not get to travel as they do the same run all the time. They are lucky for they have a full time job and are not agency like myself, wondering when and indeed if there is one more trip around the corner.

So when you got to all these places, did you get to see the places? Port cities mostly dissappoint me. Helsingborg for instance wasn't reallt cosy (there were only nightclubs and thai massages for sailors who stayed there for one or so night) I always like to get to know the cultures, which is impossible if you stick to the tourist stuff (i feel ashamed of being a tourist sometimes). When you got to this beautiful site and there are so many people (for instance americans saying "I'M SO IMPRESSED!") i can't enjoy it anymore.

My next trip is Italy, visit my man who i didn't see for 4 months  Thank god Ryanair exists...

My next trip is Italy, visit my man who i didn't see for 4 months  Thank god Ryanair exists...

I flew Ryanair for 6 months when I was working in Galway in the Republic of Ireland from Aberdeen. By booking on the Net I once flew Galway to Aberdeen for ONE EURO and in the other direction for 1 Pound!!!

I mostly sail on specialised vessels, Cable Repair, Research, Survey, Dive Support and so on so yes I get to see inland. I have never had a Port City dissapoint - you just have to get away from the dockside a bit.

Most of the Greatest City's in the World are PORT cities, so that was a very rash statement don't you think? At a stroke you are saying that New York, Boston, Halifax, Saint John's, London, Amsterdam, Stravanger.... and so on mosty dissapoint you????

You are correct about the Icelandic Sea, but where is the Norwegian Sea, last time I sailed there it was the North Sea?

Well the Icelandic Sea and the Norwegian sea are the same sea, the sea between Norway and Iceland. The Norwegians tend to take unrightful ownership of our belongings(not that the sea belongs all togher to us), just cause they found it in the 800's doesnt mean they should own it, does it? Some maps say Norwegian Sea where the Icelandic sea is. I reckon that's just Norwegians drawing them.

OK well I should add that to my list, 'cause I been there, sailed that ;)

There's a difference, some cities only exist because of their port, those are dissappointing. And yes, i think Amsterdam is daissapointing, i really hate it. It's grimy, dirty, tacky, touristic. There's simply no air, and the people are so arrogant over there. Ok, parisiennes are arrogant too, but the city is amazing, i would want to live there. There's no clutter, streets are big and clean, there is sunlight... I must say i'm not really into my country, i couldn't name things i really like here, exept for my friends and family, and the fact you can live a descent life here. But i think it's really ugly here, the sky is not bright at all, the horizon is like 200 metres(maximum!), and then it stops!

Ah I thought you would have came recently....

And I said, "Listen! I've traveled every road in this here land!"

My best friend said to me a long time ago, if the countries name ends in STAN don't go there..... eeek I am off to Kazakhstan end of January for 5 weeks.

Now how many countries can you list that end in STAN.... have fun !

Too many to list, my current 10 year passport obtained in November 2003 has only 5 blank pages left and will have to be replaced when they are full of stamps. The country I dread most of all transiting through to catch flights anyplace in the World is the USA who's immigration and visa policys seem to me to be totally out of control since 9/11.

In October of this year, when I dared to complain about the delays to non US citizens at immigration trying to enter Newark Airport to catch connecting flights to Europe I was reminded at gun point that it is a 'privilage and an exclusive right' to be allowed to Transit through the United States of America as an Alien Citizen.

This so called 'right' is one I will gladly avoid at all costs in the future if I can.

The treat non US passengers as enemy aliens, often down the point of a Gun and not as humans in transit from and to fellow 1st World countries and I am getting pretty fed up of it as I apply for my 3rd (C2/D2 Alien Seafarer in Transit) Visa in 5 years, due to changing American policies over the past 6 years.

It would seem that immigration, so called 'homeland security' and the funding of it is now a political football in the USA to be kicked about and tinkered with by every level of Government.

And I seem to be getting the wrong end of the stick right now.

This policy of applying Visa restrictions to Ship and Aircraft Crew flys in the Face of international Treaties by the International Marine Organisation and the CAA of the World of whom the USA is suposed to be a full member and makes my Seaman's ID Card and Discharge Book so much scrap paper.

If every country in the World apply Visa policies to Ships Crew (Like Australia who have followed the US lead) we will not be able to pay off in most countries for a lack of a Visa and our passports will have to be 300 page thick. At an average cost of $100 per Visa we are all going to be pretty poor as well.

When I compare my treatment at the hands of the Canadian Immigration service next door it is like chalk and cheese. Even though I am not a Canadian Citizen any more than an American one my frequent visits to live in Timmins are rarely challenged and if they are my Seamans documents gets me through every time.

I am a sailor and request shore leave in Canada. One phone call later having checked my story and seamans papers and I am in Canada for 30 days.

By the time I sign off the "British Tenacity" since Oct 29th 2006 I have sailed over half way round the World or 14,000 miles and TWO new Seas, but now I long for Timmins and the town I call home.

Countries I have been to are Northern Ireland, I was born there.
Southern Ireland Eire, I spent about six years living there when I was a child.
England, I have lived in since I was twelve, first in Liverpool, then Croydon and now Sussex.
Other countries I have been on holiday are France, Belgian, Germany, Swaziland, Italy, Spain I have relatives in Spain, my great great grand father was Spanish on my mothers side, I went on a Norwegian cruse and visited Norway, Sweden and Finland, there were a few other counters as well on the cruse but I don’t remember the names as it was only for a short stop at each place, I spent my honeymoon in Cuba were I have other relatives and on the same trip we went to Jamaica & Trinidad. Just before I moved to England we visited new York and then went up to Canada and that’s when I first hared Shania Twain, so the first female singer I ever had on CD was woman in me, by Shania Twain, and I have still got it, plus I have two more copies of woman in me, its my favourite record.

you are talking about hard to get to the USA. to be allowed to the country. I am having ****ty trouble travelling in Europe. As a non EU citizen all they give me is crap. I have to be checked thourrowly, my luggage too. I am treated as I am a terrorist. I am not allowed buy a parfume in the duty-free store and bring it on the airplane. I can buy it, alright. But I will not be able to get it until I have landed in the destination country. While a EU citizen on the same flight can buy the same parfume and bring it on the plane. What do they think I will do with it. Take the parfume open it and spray into the eyes of the captain. The figure that just because I am not EU I must be going to do something evil. stupid rules and I have to go to a line for the non EU's and have a lot of stupid questions.

The countries I have been in are the USA as I've been down the east coast to Florida and to Texas as I went to San Antonio and saw the alamo and to Austin.

I have also been to England and Scotland twice and saw lots of towns all over such as Bournemouth, London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Bath, Glasgow to name a few.

I have only travelled around my province of Ontario in Canada which is where I live. That's all I have been to so far.

I've visited the US about half a dozen times (visited Ohio, New York, Massachusetts and Florida, driven through Pennsylvania and Rhode Island).

I've been to Germany three times- to Berlin all three of those, to Munich, to a small sea-side town on the Ostsee (East Sea) called Boltenhagen and to a tiny town called Rathen in between Dresden and the Czech border.

I've been to Austria twice, to Vienna both times, Linz, Salzburg, Krems, St. Poelten and Oberwoelbling.

I've been to Hungary once- to Budapest.

I've also been to the Czech Republic where I visited Prague.

And finally, Italy. I visited Bologna and Florence.

I'm really grateful for my worldly experiences.

Upcoming: Chicago, IL. I haven't been to the US since 2004. Can't say I always look forward to going there but it's certainly always an experience to say the least.
