McManus Island
Music promoter Andrew McManus, master of his marquee on Derby Day, was on the money when he backed Kelly in the second race at Sydney's Rosehill, winning a tidy $20,000. "It was an omen bet after Kelly Clarkson," McManus told Diary about the American Idol winner who is yodelling at Rod Laver Arena next Wednesday. Then he blew the 20 grand on fifth-place Activation in Flemington's Mackinnon Stakes, but made a few dollars when Shania Dane (after Shania Twain) came third in the Myer Classic. Handy for Andy to pay the marquee bill. While the revellers rocked on late into the afternoon, McManus departed at 5pm to fly to Perth for Pavarotti's last hurrah. "People who went to both concerts said he was a lot better there," McManus said. Too bad for the Melburnians lamenting that the Pav sounded like he had too much lead in his saddlebag.
