Torrey Road and Baldwin was one of many intersections hit by gridlock because of the accident on US-23 in fact, Baldwin Road in both directions was closed to traffic for several hours.
The accident had drivers scrambling to find other ways to get to where they needed to go. Many drivers were forced off of US-23 at Thompson, after sitting in backed up traffic for a good long while.
Some drivers told TV5 they were lucky to have a map other drivers simply went with the flow, like one woman we found from Ohio, who was headed up north hoping not to get lost. For many drivers who live in this area, commuting headaches are nothing new.
With the ongoing road construction on US-23, this accident just added to their daily frustration. US-23 looked more like a parking lot than a highway. Drivers had more than a few delays after four semis collided on US-23. The biggest problem was the accident happened right in the middle of construction season, when only one lane was open in the first place.
TV5 learned at least two people were taken to the hospital, with non-life threatening injuries. We're told one of the semis was carrying jet fuel.
Genesee County hazmat crews were on the scene, but told us there was no spillage and no environmental damage. Hazmat crews are on location, determined the best course of action while drivers sat for hours waiting to be freed from the traffic.
Drivers told TV5 in the future, they'll be even more careful, and make sure to buckle up and go slower at least until construction season is over.
