24. Mike and the Mechanics - Living Years  (Paul Carrack roools..!)

Hey, you're right John...... Paul Carrack is one of the truly great male vocalists, although I personally like some of the other songs he's done with Mike Rutherford even more - and his contributions to Steve Hackett's "Genesis Revisited".

I saw him in concert last year, just four days before Shania....... so I was hoarse even before the Shania concert!

Hey, you're right John...... Paul Carrack is one of the truly great male vocalists, although I personally like some of the other songs he's done with Mike Rutherford even more - and his contributions to Steve Hackett's "Genesis Revisited".

I like anything where Paul Carrack sings: be it Ace, Bleeding Heart Band, M+M - or solo... but 'Living Years' really has an amazing gospel-like feel to it, due to it's sad personal lyric matter beautifully penned by Mike Rutherford... there's a wonderful uplifting promise of hope and continuity at the end of the song, when the choir and band start their final crescendo and Paul Carrack belts out the chorus lines again... man... it really goes through the roof on the goose bump Richter scale over here... :]

ahhh... "Genesis Revisited" - yep, got that on CD and DVD too: lots of favorite artists of mine on it: simply heaven... also, a nice glimpse of what would possibly have been, if instead of choosing Phil Collins to replace Peter Gabriel on the vocals - they would've got John Wetton to move over from King Crimson... *sigh* ...Genesis could've been a completely different beast...

The last time was in Tel Aviv, November 7th...

...he's been saying for years how he'd be willing to do a reunion, IF he gets to play the drums AND Peter Gabriel handles the vocals - and I agree. :)

...I still feel a bit disapointed, that they didn't continue with Ray Wilson on the vocals - 'Calling All Stations', IMO, was the most interesting stuff they'd put out since 'Duke'... but the American market wouldn't have it without Phil... grrr..! :scowl:

John,

It sounds as though, like me, you much preferred the early Genesis, where tracks would happily go off at a tangent for half an hour! ;)

I think things started to go downhill after Steve Hackett left - I think he lent an extra dimension to the music. I also considered Duke their last album of real interest - ironically, it was the album where Phil Collins' vocals reached their peak..... but after that I felt they became a bit too predictable. Fortunately, by then there were some decent solo projects on the go. I think Mike and the Mechanics have been the most consistent, but Steve Hackett has come up with some interesting stuff........ and I wish I could play the guitar as well as he can!

But Genesis fronted by Paul Carrack or John Wetton and with Steve Hackett still on guitar would have been interesting...... although who would have played the bass?!

I'm going to use a phrase another member here often uses: "indubitably"... :p

umm... John Wetton (http://www.johnwetton.co.uk) *is* a bass player, also still has nearly the same vocal range as he did back in the 70's (which is pretty amazing considering the way he sings)... I've managed to see him once in an acoustic concert: he's phenomenal. Also, he's back with Geoff Downes to create more songs under the name 'Icon' (NO 'Asia') :p - which is good, as the first one didn't quite convince me yet...

That's what I meant..... but Mike Rutherford is a pretty good bass player too.....! I was presuming that he'd still be in the band as well.

I have to confess that I've never heard "Icon" - I'll have to go and find them on Amazon.

Delta is great!
Her own songs are even better in her CD Innocent Eyes IMO. Born To Try, Not Me Not I, f.ex.
