A can of beer led to the fight that resulted in the fatal stabbing of a Springfield man, prosecutors said Thursday.
Patricia A. Gibson, 44, who is accused of stabbing her longtime boyfriend at their apartment Tuesday night, was charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree murder.
She is being held on $1 million bond in the Sangamon County Jail. A preliminary hearing on the charges was set for Jan. 19. If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces 20 to 60 years in prison.
Robert L. Porter, 54, died at Memorial Medical Center at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, about an hour after he allegedly was stabbed by Gibson in their apartment at 3203 S. Sixth St.
First assistant state's attorney Steve Weinhoeft, in asking that Gibson's $1 million bond be maintained, said Gibson stabbed Porter in the upper chest with a steak knife during an argument over a can of Natural Light beer.
When Gibson told Associate Circuit Judge Roger Holmes she could not afford to hire her own attorney, Holmes asked if she was employed. Gibson replied that she was not.
Holmes then asked how she put food on the table. She replied, "Bobby."
Police earlier said Porter and Gibson had been a couple for some time and had at least one child together. No children were in the apartment at the time of the stabbing.
Weinhoeft said Thursday that Gibson has no criminal record. Court records show only traffic offenses, he said, including a DUI in 2002.
An autopsy Wednesday showed Porter died from blood loss from a single stab wound.
