found this on the cmt message board

"Working with Mutt has to be one of the top musical experiences of my entire life," she says. "My brother, he's calling and getting an update. Then my brother's friend is calling. All these people were calling me, going, 'What's he like?' Because we've all been huge fans of his forever."

she does! I've seen her in concert with Union Station, and she was hilarious. I've also seen her in interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, and she's always like that..making jokes and smiling. Her type of humor is different than others and you'd never expect it from her, but it's there :p . and I LOVE her singing voice!!!

I agree that she has a great voice and very pleasing sense of humor. However there are some limitations.

She seemed to do a fantastic job harmonizing and backing up Shania in the Up Close and Personal performance, along with Union Station. Perhaps that show had quite a bit of direction/influence from Mutt. Anyway, I was unusually impressed with Alison, more so than with Shania. I already knew Shania, and knew at least approximately, what to expect in terms of music. But Alison exceeded my expectations musically, partly because she was so good, and partly because I didn't know her before then.

So I looked for some more of her music. Friends recommended that I get the double DVD "Alison Krauss + Union Station Live."

At first, I was stymied because my elderly DVD in my PC wouldn't play more than about 15 seconds of the DVD before my software crashed. So I spent weeks trying to rehab my old DVD, then finally taking it out and disassembling it to see if I could fix it. No dice! Finally got a new DVD some months later and finally got to experience the AK + US DVD's.

Very interesting. This gal has one of the most angelic voices I've heard. But on many songs, it's so understated that it's too quiet. Her commentary between songs is delightfully mischievious, sometimes almost with a hint of devilish sparkle in her eyes..., but not quite. She creates tensions, usually between her and the members of Union Station, that can't help but make me smile. On the one hand, she's sincerely describing and appreciating their amazing backgrounds and award winning talents. On the other hand, she's teasing the heck out of them for their individual shortcomings, some real, and some obviously exaggerated for effect. I could see that they loved her like a sister, even though she made them squirm in embarrassment, and struggle to hold their tongue in resisting the urge to 'set the record straight.'

Even so, some the early dialog between songs shows Alison turning away from the microphone to look at her band members etc., recurrently, and her voice all but fades out. I simply couldn't hear all she said, at multiple occasions during the DVD's. Don't know if this was a simple lack of awareness on her part, some flaw in the microphone equipment, or a problem with the DVD mixing, which may not have existed for the live audience at the show. Somehow I doubt it would be lack of awareness on her part. She's done a lot of performing and I think I saw that she's won a lot larger number of some big awards than Shania.

So perhaps it was also the mixing then, that caused the variations in volume for her singing voice on these DVD's too.

My original impression of the DVD's, was that there were a few songs that were just about perfection. But most songs were not nearly that good. For some, her voice seemed too quiet. I could hear the quality, but it was not brought out to the full. On a small number of songs, her voice was a lot louder. I had a mixed reaction to that. On the one hand, I could hear that her voice has the capacity to blow me away with pleasure and enjoyment. But the context of the songs where she sang loud, usually did not accomplish that.

I attribute that to two things. One is that she needs a larger percentage of songs with top flight writing in combination of music and lyrics. The other is the need for better music production and mixing. I do not believe she needs to be a better singer or performer herself. She's already top-flight. And Union Station is great too.

So yes, maybe she would benefit a lot from further influence by Mutt Lange.

Even given the limitations, there's a lot of interesting things to see and hear on the 2 DVD's of her and Union Station.
