DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. A three-year-old Florida boy died on New Years Day, a week after he was allegedly held by his mother in a tub of scalding water as a punishment on Christmas Day.
Broward County deputies found Jaquez Mason with burns over 50 percent of his body when his grandmother finally called 9-1-1 yesterday. He was pronounced dead a half-hour later.
The boy's grandmother had legal custody of him, because the mother had lost custody after previous child abuse. But the mother was allowed by the grandmother to take him on Christmas.
Valerie Kennedy is charged with child abuse murder. The grandmother is charged with manslaughter for not taking to boy to a doctor or a hospital for treatment.
