You guys in Europe are just getting the temperatures we usually get. But not this winter. It has actually gone over zero Celsius in the past few days! But last night it dropped to about -1C and we got 15cm of heavy wet snow. Ugh!! It took me 90 minutes to get it cleared and to get a neighbour unstuck from the snow.

Displaced Arctic cold air behind mild winter
Updated Sun. Jan. 22 2006 11:42 PM ET

Canadian Press

TORONTO — A displaced "pole" of cold Arctic air is why Canada has been spared its normally brutal winter weather while Russia and Europe have endured a deadly blast of cold, says Environment Canada.

With the exception of Iqaluit, the entire country has seen temperatures far warmer than usual so far this year, with only brief stretches of weather that could be classified as normal.

"Everybody is saying the same thing: Where is winter? It doesn't matter if you're at Portage and Main (in Winnipeg), whether you're in chinook country, or off the coast of Newfoundland, people are saying the same thing,'' says senior climatologist David Phillips.

Canadians are enjoying the relatively balmy season because a pole -- or zone -- of cold air that usually hovers around Hudson Bay has positioned itself this year around Greenland and Siberia, Phillips said.

Because that mass of cold air isn't nearby, warmer air is bringing mild weather to the country.

"We can't say this is tropical air, it's the absence of any cold air,'' Phillips explained.

"What's been allowed to happen is breezes from the Pacific Ocean and the south have waffled across the country from Vancouver to Bonavista, N.L.

"It's been bringing cold weather to Russia and Europe but it's almost as if it's gone from the map of North America,'' he said.

Vancouver has been about 3.5 degrees warmer than normal this January, Calgary has been seven degrees above average and Regina has averaged temperatures of -6C rather than its typical -16C, Phillips said.

And even in Yellowknife, traditionally the coldest city in Canada, the temperature has been about seven degrees warmer than normal.

But perhaps nowhere has the break from winter been appreciated more than in Winnipeg, which is considered to be the coldest city in the world with more than 600,000 people, Phillips said.

"The average temperature in January should be -17.8C and it's been -6.3C. They are absolutely pinching themselves out there,'' he said. "They're used to temperatures of -30C or -34C and they have not seen that at all.''

While Iqaluit's temperatures have been slightly above normal, it's the only place in Canada where the difference has been imperceptible, he said.

"In Iqaluit the average temperature in January is -26.6C and this January it's -26C. So even there it's just half a degree warmer than normal, though you wouldn't feel it,'' Phillips said.

But there's no guarantee that current conditions will last and a return to the cold snap that started the winter season in many places is always possible.

"We really have had a remarkable, almost textbook, example of what winter can give us. If you were from a different part of the world and you wanted to sample what winter was like, you just had to spend a week here,'' Phillips said.

"From wind chills to balminess, and snow cover to it disappearing. I wouldn't use the word random -- because weather tends to be chaotic and random anyway -- but it really has been quite a variety, quite a sideshow.''

Alberta has had the warmest and most unusual weather all winter of all of Canada. BC has been warm, of course, but that is normal for them. The rest of Canada has been above average too.

Here is the snow cover yesterday in Canada:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/Ardern/snowcover060129.gif

Large parts of Alberta are without snow as are southwestern Ontario, the Niagara Peninsula and although it doesn't show well here, the city of Toronto and the north shore of Lake Ontario. In a normal winter nowhere east of the Rockies would be without snow.

Here in Ottawa we have tons of snow. This is because it usually hasn't quite got above zero when the precipitation comes. Just a half hour south of here, the snow cover is very thin and keeps disappearing.

canoilers
01-30-2006, 11:08am
There's almost no snow on the ground. What little there is of snow is the stuff that been packed down by people walking on it. I still can't believe what December was like, most of the month the temps were in double digits. There could be another year of drought this year. We just started making up for the draught we had from two years ago last year. Last year was the first regular winter we've had in awhile. Now its starting too feel like whats normal for these parts isn't normal anymore.

Well, there is heat and then there is heat. What I mean is, heat with humidity is very unpleasant. You feel sticky all the time. But a dry heat is lovely. One of the reasons we have taken vacations in the desert so often is the dry heat.

canoilers
01-30-2006, 7:24pm
Well usually its pretty dry out here but still 40 Celsius is 40 above. I am a boilermaker so I do know about the humidity. I mean a boilers hot when it minus 40 and you sweat bullets, specially if you happen to be working on one inbetween two other ones. In the summer it can get really unbearable. There is a big danger of people getting dehydrated, thats why companies pay for Gataraide and popsicles.

Roger
01-30-2006, 7:34pm
We have done hikes in the desert at 40C. It really wasn't bad. The humidity was around 10%. When it is that dry, the sweat evaporates immediately and you are never clammy, except your back underneath the backpack. The great danger that newbies often forget is you gotta drink a lot and carry many cans of water. Otherwise, you will get heat exhaustion and it can hit very suddenly.

The average temps are from -17 to -7. Sometimes we get cold snaps down to -34. We have had no cold snaps at all this year. Suits me just fine! :)

I laughed! :p Well not at you or your question, but I laughed of that it reminded me of a English couple who bought an old house just a couple of km from where I live. They live in central London now and will move here quite soon.
They had to do alot of work on the house since it haven´t been used for permanent living since the 50´s, for example there where no toilet.
They built a toilet/bathrom and they just made a hole in the wall and put the sewer pipe on the outside of the house "British style" and we told them: You can´t have it like that! It will freeze right the way. :nono:
They just said: Sure we can, we have winter in England too you know, and it works just fine... Yeah right! :funny:

Well, I haven´t heard anything about them in a while, but most likely are the whole sewer system just a big lump of ice by now, lol. And the toilet bowl have most likely frozed in to pieces and fallen of the wall....

And the toilet bowl have most likely frozed in to pieces and fallen of the wall....:biglaugh: - !!!

...simply unbelievable... :p

Hopefully the temperatures aren't rising too close to zero over there... with the possibility of water damages, there's no insurance company in Scandinavia that will cover for that kind of piping structuring...

The company I work for does a whole lot of jobs with waterdamages and other insurance work, and I get amazed all the time how strange kinds of damages the insurace companies actually covers.

Wanna hear some more.... "dirty" stories? :p We have a not so nice damage in a house. A sewer pipe broke down under the house and a workmate of mine was there the day before yesterday to tear up the floors to be able to fix the problem, the whole foundation under the house was literally full of..... poo!
Fortunately it was several minus degrees at the time so it was all frozen! :p

So far this year has been very strange weather wise.
There were 2 weeks in January that it was -20°C and a lot of snow. All the other days there has been pretty much been normal summer weather 5-10°C and raining. But this week 6.feb-10.feb it has been cold again -15°C
Normal winter weather in this time of year would be 0°C to -5°C, but it hasnt been that way. Very strange.

It's gonna be the cause of my death if it starts to be 5-10°C and raining all year around. All the gray clouds and all the constant grayness here is so depressing. I have only seen the sun 3-4 days this year so far. I miss it so much.

The Brits came today! I never spoke with them myself, but a workmate did and guess what? The toilet bowl was frozen in to pieces! :funny: :funny:

They also had summer tires on their car, but with snow chains  :uhh: That can´t be comfortable to drive around with. :funny:

Travel snarled as snow blankets Northeast
Flights canceled as snow, lightning hits region; hundreds lose power

NEW YORK - The region’s first major storm this winter brought lightning and 6 inches of snow to New York City on Sunday and a foot of snow to parts of New Jersey, canceling flights across the Northeast and knocking out power to hundreds of homes.

The New York metro area and much of the Northeast were under a blizzard warning, with the National Weather Service predicting winds up to 50 mph could bring down trees and power lines. Heavy snow warnings were issued from eastern Kentucky to New England.

On average, 12 to 18 inches of snow were expected throughout the metro region, with temperatures as low as 23 degrees, forecasters said. In Wayne, N.J., a foot of snow had accumulated Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Silva said. Hundreds of New Jersey homes were without power late Saturday.

In a rare display, lightning bolts joined the snow over LaGuardia Airport, where most airlines had canceled all flights until Sunday afternoon. Delta, Delta Shuttle and American Airlines had canceled all flights at the airport until Monday, said Steve Coleman, spokesman for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

Air travel snarled
More than 100 Sunday flights were canceled at John F. Kennedy International airport, including all Delta flights, and several carriers canceled most or all of their Sunday departing flights at Newark Liberty International.

Delta said it canceled its Sunday arrivals and departures at several other airports in the storm’s path, including those in Philadelphia; Boston; Baltimore; Newark; Providence, R.I.; Washington, D.C.; and Hartford, Conn.

Four inches of snow had accumulated in parts of Fairfax, Va. late Saturday, and crews worked to clear the runways at Washington Dulles International Airport in suburban Virginia.

But the storm is good news and free advertising for ski resorts after an unseasonably warm January dragged down business, said Betsy Strickler at Jiminy Peak ski resort in western Massachusetts.

“The best PR is when people look up in the sky ... see the snow start to fall,” she said.

Residents stock up on supplies
In the hours before the snow began falling, New York residents formed long lines at supermarkets as they stocked up on bottled water and basic supplies.

The city’s 353 salt-spreading plow trucks went out with 200,000 tons of rock salt on hand, said Kathy Dawkins, spokeswoman for the Department of Sanitation. Twenty machines throughout the five boroughs would be melting up to 60 tons of snow per hour, she said.

The department’s trucks have some 6,300 miles of city streets and roads to plow — about the distance from New York to Los Angeles and back, Dawkins said.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation had 600 trucks ready to plow snow and spread salt, plus 1,100 contractor trucks, the department said. Officials also lowered the speed limit on the entire length of the New Jersey Turnpike to 45 mph.

About 2,100 road workers were on the job and more than 1,900 salt trucks and plows were out clearing roads around the Maryland — nearly a full deployment, officials said.

Ah but not much longer to go Mell before Spring and I have enjoyed some wonderful summers in your country. Much warmer than Scotland.

Timmins will start to warm up soon as well and before you know it we will all be in a heatwave again. I remember the weather on the Saturday during Fan convention number 2 when we all got frazzled playing Golf, or trying to play Golf. Saint Patricks day today though, so going out to have some fun tonight and listen to a Celtic band in the Victory Tavern.

Oh to be in Sunny Marseille... 15 deg C we could not even match that last July 1st for Canada Day and the Gillies Lake Ribfest weekend... Ooh that was fun though, hope I get to help out again this year..

PS Canada Day July 1st 2005... 11 deg C and horizontal sleet and rain... Back in 1999 when Shania did her famous homecoming concert for Canada day in the Hollinger Park..... 14 deg C and Rain...

Do I see a pattern here?
