Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing "a few precious hours of studio time here and there," as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ("Love and Happiness," "Belle Starr"). Yet now that it's here, All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece. Anyone familiar with the artists' famous catalogues would expect the repertoire to be poetic and brooding, and that Harris's ethereal soprano would add light to Knopfler's dark Prozac rumblings. But the surprise is that the album is too tame, never breaks out of its midtempo groove, and never takes any big chances. That said, there is much to like: The marital scrapbook romp of "This Is Us," the bluesy bickering of "Right Now," the wrenching poignancy of the 9/11-inspired ballad "If This Is Goodbye." Knopfler, ever the hypnotic guitarist, turns in some thrillingly droll and laconic vocals, and Harris brings the spirited coltishness of her early work to "Belle Starr." In the end, though, this is not so much a duet album as two famously melancholy musicians singing together--at times, strikingly so. --Alanna Nash

I'm sorry, but I've only ever heard 2 Queen songs (knowing they were by Queen) - Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions. And I HATE Bohemian Rhapsody. I heard it so much at camp and it's basically random things strung together. My hatred of it was awoken this summer.

OK, well it is an aquired taste I suppose but it is timeless and most people like it the more they hear it. It's very original and clever, there's nothing like it. It's kind of regarded as the greatest song ever written here.

You might know a few more, they are pretty big. They sold more albums here than any artist. But they kind of got banned in the US for dressing up as girls in a video, the American market thought it was too camp so they got blacklisted, weird because now Queen are loved in North America.

You might know others and not know they did them, some songs were massive over there:

We Will Rock You
Another One Bites The Dust
Crazy Little Thing Called Love

No?

Big Swede

Didn´t they have a bunch of naked women on bicycles on stage during their first ever concert in US? Or is that just a rumour?
No wonder why they got banned otherwise. :funny: :funny:

There are very few things they didn't do! :funny: The video for Bicycle Race had 50 naked girls on bicycles. Queen invented the music video, Bohemian Rhapsody was the first ever, and done to allow them to be on Top of The Pops whilst touring in Australia....so everytime you enjoy a Shania (or other) video, Queen brought that about.!

It doesn't have videos. I have this myself. I just happened to find it one day at some music store. I don't recall where. The price was about the same as the regular CD. The sound is better, but I can only play it on my home theater DVD player or my pc. My boombox won't play it, nor my car unit. So, I don't use it a lot.

In the UK, they often have polls and its usually number one. It's kind of official now, the Guinness book of records have given it the official title. In terms of sales it's 3rd, behind Candle in the Wind and Band Aid. 14 weeks in total at number 1.

How does the sound differ?

Paul
09-22-2006, 5:30pm
I can't really hear that much difference, other than it uses the surround sound a bit more I think. But you have to be sat in exactly the right position etc....I usually listen to music when I'm driving or on my cd walkman so its not really worth buying it again. I just got my hands on American V: A Hundred Highways. Very good album and he covered two great Canadian writers in this one. He covers Gordon Lightfoots If You Could Read My Mind and Ian Tyson's Four Strong Winds. Cool! Johnny's singing about the great province of Alberta, I maybe biased but I like it. :D

I got a movie two with my cd purchase. Its the two disc anniversary edition of Field Of Dreams.

The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot (30th Anniversary Remastered Expanded Edition)

They say a poem is never finished, it is abandoned. The same could certainly be said of music, lyrics or any creative effort. The great advantage of the recording process is that as one keeps rough mixes as a guide, one can delve into stages before the point of abandonment and revisit some of the magic from earlier attempts or stages.

Amongst this collection of bonus material for the 'I Robot' album, there are several examples of the magical early takes and in this re-mastered version of 'I Robot', for those interested in the process, there is a unique opportunity to glimpse behind the curtain of the recording process. Also included are some abandoned experiments as well as demo material which guided the ultimate master recordings.

Here is a track listing of the bonus material to be included on the 'I Robot' expanded edition album to whet your appetite!

Track 11 - I Robot (Boules experiment)

EW "This is an example of an abandoned experiment. While in France, I noticed that Boules was the local French obsession, much like snooker in the UK or pool in the US. I discovered these metal balls made a fascinating noise when you banged them lightly together and I tried to incorporate this into an early studio demo recording of I Robot. Although I thought the effect could have worked quite well, Alan didn't share my enthusiasm and the idea was abandoned."

Track 12 - Breakdown (Early Demo of Backing Riff)

AP "This is an early attempt to find a feel from a chord sequence I had come up with. Eric constructed the final melody and lyrics around it. It is slower than the tempo eventually chosen."

Track 13 - I Wouldn't Want Be Like You (Backing Track Rough Mix)

EW "This is an excellent example of the early stage of the magic 'take' which was eventually developed into the master recording. Interestingly, from the point of view of any aspiring solo guitarists, this rough mix pre-dates the tremendous Ian Bairnson solo which was such a feature of so many of the Project recordings, but this was what Ian developed his solo over and it gives an opportunity for others to see what they might have come up with by playing along with the backing."

Track 14 - Day after Day (early stage rough mix)

AP "This was an example of a 'feel' based track built around a synthesizer figure."

Track 15 - The Naked Robot

EW "I recall that in creating 'Projects' we attempted to let different tracks merge into each other as part of the editing process and this meant that much of the material recorded was in compatible tempos and keys. We were reminded of this while reviewing much of the archive material on this album and had the idea of trying to re-combine some early stage mixes of material that was subsequently developed differently. This ten-minute medley of early stage mixes of instrumental pieces on the album seems to take on a life of its own with a different ambience and feel to the original record. The elements contained within this medley all appeared in a modified form on the eventual master, which could obviously have gone in a very different direction."

The Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The Sky (25th Anniversary Remastered Expanded Edition)

Whenever the core musicians complete a basic backing track, there is a sensation of having reached a plateau and although the eventual production may take the recording in a totally different direction, at that moment something rather special has been created which the music buyer is often unaware of.

Amongst this collection of bonus material, there are several examples of the magical early takes and in this re-mastered version of 'Eye In The Sky', for those interested in the process, there is a unique opportunity to glimpse behind the curtain of the recording sessions. We have also included some abandoned experiments as well as demo material, which guided the ultimate master recordings.

Here is a track listing of the bonus material to be included on the 'Eye in the Sky' expanded edition album to whet your appetite!

Track 11 - Sirius (Demo)

AP "I often worked at home on writing instrumental tracks that could be programmed and subsequently imported into the Studio environment, where Eric and I would work on them together with the studio band. This demo of Sirius is an example of a very early version. We later changed the key to make it an intro to the title track."

Track 12 - Old & Wise (EW guide vocal)

AP " Eric would always record a guide vocal at an early stage sometimes with only draft lyrics which were subsequently revised. This was most likely the version Colin Blunstone used to learn the song for his vocal on the master."

Track 13 - Any Other Day (studio demo)

EW "Although this song did not make it onto the original album, it is perhaps interesting for two reasons. Stylistically, there is a similarity between the arrangement of this track and the middle orchestral section of 'Silence and I'. Secondly, the song is one of my personal favourites, though perhaps more suited to musical theatre and I'm currently in the process of completing it."

Track 14- Silence & I (EW early guide vocal)

EW "One of the most interesting things for me was to be reminded of the original middle section before the orchestra was added. Andrew Powell's masterful orchestral arrangement was added later, but here is the unembellished early version."

Track 15 - The Naked Eye

EW "The Naked Eye selection gives a glimpse behind the curtain of the recording studio process. One of the producer's roles is decision making as to what is used and what is not used and in this medley we have incorporated some early pre-lead vocal mixes and backing tracks which have a special magic of their own as well as individual tracks which were used in the final masters, and some which were not. As the composition of the album was thematic, it is perhaps no surprise that many of the component tracks fitted easily together. Speaking of magic moments, a feature of many of the project recordings are the masterful multi-track harmonies of Chris Rainbow and we have included a small segment where you can hear clearly what has only previously been submerged in the overall mix."

Track 16 - Eye Pieces (Classical Naked Eye)

EW "One of the most enjoyable parts of the recording process is the orchestral overdub session. In this compilation, We have taken a selection of the orchestral tracks on their own. Some of Andrew Powell's outstanding arrangements are heard here as we experienced them at the time. Some of the component parts were not used in the final mix, but even those that were will not have been heard as they are here. Some of the component parts can be easily identified, but the slow string section comes almost incredibly from the orchestral overdub on Mammagamma and only a small fragment was incorporated in the original mix. At the end of the piece, we have included an experiment tried at the end of Silence & I. Andrew Powell and I built up a multi-piano idea, which was subsequently replaced by an orchestra."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/FinnFreak/VC.gif

The Alan Parsons Project - Vulture Culture (Remastered Expanded Edition)

Amongst this collection of bonus material, there are several examples of the magical early takes and in this re-mastered version of 'Vulture Culture', for those interested in the process, there is a unique opportunity to glimpse behind the curtain of the recording process. Also included is the track 'No Answers Only Questions' which was left out of the album, together with an early version of it which is differently constructed.

Here is a track listing of the bonus material to be included on the 'Vulture Culture' expanded edition album to wet your appetite!

Track 9 - No Answers Only Questions (final version)

EW "The essence of the Vulture Culture album for me was a comment on the economic harshness of Western society and this track was meant to represent a street musician performing in a very non-Project way. I even expected to include the sound effect of coins being thrown into a hat, but it was decided to leave the song out. We now have the perfect excuse to include it as a bonus track."

Track 10 - Separate Lives (Alternative Mix)

EW "This version of the song has a different approach from the version that was originally released. There are no backing vocals and the synth instrumental line in the choruses is emphasized."

Track 11 - Hawkeye (Demo)

AP "This is one of my demos, parts of which were subsequently imported as a synth sequence into the Studio environment and the "real" rhythm section was added. It's a good example of an early version of the track where feel is more important than accuracy."

Track 12 - The Naked Vulture

EW "On each of these re-mastered albums we are including a 'Naked' medley, which consists of extracts form various tracks of the original master recordings, together with early rough mixes etc. The body of this selection is taken from early mixes without vocals, which give a good indication of the basic feel of many of the tracks. As part of the track 'Let's Talk About Me' we had edited in a conversation which took place in the Villa Bianca restaurant in London with a good friend of the Project, radio programmer Lee Abrams. Lee accompanied by his wife Sandra, was performing his party piece at dinner, which consisted of a ten-minute rant on any subject you cared to mention, as well as his apparent skill as an air traffic controller! His performance was recorded on a Sony Walkman and some of it was subsequently incorporated into the master. On reviewing the archive, we realized that there were other marvelous moments, many of which are included in this Naked medley. Incidentally, I realised that Laser Beam was a perfect anagram of his name and he was credited on the original album as such."

Track 13 - No Answers Only Questions (The First Attempt)

AP "I remember we struggled rather to make this song work in the context of the other tracks which had much more of a rock feel. This early take came across with a 'folky" feel which seemed to carry through to the final version (included here - Track 9). I think it was the right decision to exclude it from the original album, but it has been interesting to hear it again."

Phenomena - PsychoFantasy (IV)

The first Phenomena album (1985) was an all-star effort, led by songwriter/producer Tom Galley and featuring a.o. Glenn Hughes, Cozy Powell, Mel Galley, Neil Murray and Don Airey – it still ranks very high in my list of favourite melodic rock albums. N° 2 was also impressive, boasting lead vocals by Hughes, John Wetton, Max Bacon and Ray Gillen. This one even generated a minor hit single, ‘Did It All For Love’. ‘III – Inner Vision’ followed in 1992 (with vocals by Keith Murrell) but turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.

Rumours of a 4th instalment have been around for ages, but it took until now to finally get released. With a cast of mostly unknown musicians, Galley still managed to get some big names involved: Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin and Keith Murrell on lead vocals and JJ March and Tom’s brother Mel Galley on guitars. ‘PsychoFantasy’ is decidedly the heaviest of the four albums, but still with that very melodic dimension that also characterized the earlier records; most tracks are midtempo and are often comparable to Tony Martin-era Sabbath, albeit with a bit more twists and turns.

Some great songs here, with a fair amount of variation and some quite surprising developments. ‘Killing For The Thrill’, for instance, begins very heavy, with almost hard-core metal-like scatting vocals, but features the most melodic chorus present. Then there’s ‘How Do You Feel?’ (sung by Glenn Hughes), which also starts off pretty heavy, but evolves into something like a pop/soul ballad. Very peculiar, but it does work. Hughes also puts his stamp on the terrific rockers ‘Touch My Life’ and ‘Higher’.

On ‘Chemical High’ and ’60 Seconds’, Tom Galley manages to re-create that special Phenomena mood that was present on the first two albums. The latter in particular is very impressive – sung mainly by Joy Strachan and featuring a Led Zeppelin – ‘Kashmir’-like riff, an excellent chorus and great harmony vocals. ‘So Near So Far’ is an excellent power ballad. The doomy ‘God Forgives’, with the distinctive vocals of Tony Martin, is also one of the highlights. ‘Crazy Grooves’ is the only track I don’t really like.

Recorded in 2004, ‘PsychoFantasy’ took quite a while to get a release, but it was definitely worth the wait. Recommended!

Yeah Tamara, I got one that she'd previously signed when I saw her in concert on May 16th. She's really good, as is her daughter who sang a bit with her too. They actually sang You Needed Me together, with her daughter doing Shania's parts.

"Introducing Joss Stone" by Joss Stone. I've been in the BMG music service club for quite sometimes. After purchasing a number of cds you are entitled to pick one for free except you have to pay the shipping and handling fees. So it only cost me $2.79 when I purchased "Introducing Joss Stone." I like almost any kind of music and once in a while I will take a chance on a new artist, thus I purchased "Introducing Joss Stone." I was disappointed, NOT MY KIND OF MUSIC. But some times I will like a cd the second time around. I'll just have to wait and see on this one. There was one track, "Bruised But Not Broken" that I added to my computer because the song felt like what Shania must be going through.

Coldplay's new album is excellent.

I heard some tracks, it sounded as good as their other stuff so it should do well. I'm not a big fan but they are good and original.
