They left along time before they moved from Montreal. I used to cheer for the team, but I couldn't take the fact nobody in Montreal supported them. I changed to the Mets because of it. It was too sad to cheer for them, because you knew it was only a matter of time before they were gone. It broke my little heart, just think they were one of the Majors best teams at one time.

I blame the business of Baseball for killing fan support in Montreal. They had too sell all of their good players. Anytime they had a team worth winning a world series they'd go and cancel the season, and not just once.

Are you kidding, we almost lost too South Africa. We've got Major League players on our team, they should be doing better than that. This is almost as bad as hockey team at the Olympics. There was one Major league player on South Africa's team and they almost beat us. Who's managing this team, Pat Quinn. :p

Doesn't look like there are going to be many 1-0 games this season. By mid-season we will probably be watching single A pitchers in the bigs as all the major leaguers are gonna have sore arms from pitching so much and giving up so many runs!;)
Go Tigers! They been scoring a lot of 10 run + games it seems.

After brawl, White Sox punch out Cubs
Four ejected after Barrett punches Pierzynski as ChiSox win 7-0
CHICAGO - Michael Barrett punched A.J. Pierzynski in the jaw after a home-plate collision between the two catchers, and the Cubs-White Sox rivalry boiled over Saturday in a melee that led to four ejections.
After Pierzynski ran over his Cubs counterpart at the plate, Barrett landed a right cross and the benches emptied, a brawl that will bring fines and probably suspensions.
It’s a play that will certainly be talked about for years in a city with strong and divided passions for its two baseball teams, whose playing fields are just 8 miles apart.
Minutes after play resumed following a nearly 15-minute delay, Tadahito Iguchi hit a grand slam and then later added a two-run shot to back strong pitching by Freddy Garcia as the White Sox routed the frustrated Cubs 7-0.
Garcia (7-1) won his seventh straight decision, allowing eight hits in eight shutout innings. He was backed by three double plays against a Cubs team that has lost 17 of 21.
With the bases loaded, Pierzynski — who was in the middle of several wild plays in the postseason last year as the White Sox won their first World Series title in 88 years — took off from third on a fly ball to medium left by Brian Anderson and knocked Barrett over before the ball arrived.
Pierzynski slapped the plate after the collision as the ball got away from Barrett. The Cubs catcher got up, grabbed Pierzynski and punched him. The White Sox’s Scott Podsednik, who had been in the on-deck circle, wrestled Barrett to the ground.
ALSO ON THIS STORY
Cubs-White Sox box score
Anderson then got into a fight with Cubs first baseman John Mabry.
Pierzynski, Barrett, Anderson and Mabry were all ejected.
“I asked Michael what happened and Michael said he (Pierzynski) hit him without the ball, but that’s baseball to me,” Cubs manager Dusty Baker said during an in-game TV interview.
“I think Michael is frustrated. Everybody is frustrated and everything broke out.”
As Pierzynski went back to the dugout, he raised his hands in the air while most of the fans in a sellout crowd of 39,387 at U.S. Cellular Field roared. He slapped hands with his teammates and pointed to his jaw.
Considered an agitator by opponents, Pierzynski has long been one of the most unpopular players in the majors.
Umpires huddled to determine who should be ejected and Barrett was not initially tossed, even taking some warmup pitches.
“I think the fight is going to bring us together and (make us) tougher,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said.
After order was restored, Podsednik drew a walk from Rich Hill (0-4) to load the bases again and Iguchi connected on his first career slam to make it 5-0. He homered again off Hill following a single by Podsednik in the fifth.
Last year in the ALCS, Pierzynski raced to first after a disputed strikeout and was called safe, setting up the White Sox’s winning rally against the Angels in Game 2.
Hill, still searching for his first major league win, gave up five hits and seven runs in four-plus innings, while issuing five walks.
Notes: Iguchi had his first multihomer game and his six RBIs were a career high. ... In their 20 games before Saturday, the Cubs’ offensive woes were best summed up by this: They were batting just .146 with runners in scoring position. ... The White Sox were still waiting to decide what roster move they would make when Jose Contreras is officially activated from the disabled list to start Sunday’s series finale. A relief pitcher is expected to be sent to the minors. Contreras, who has won 13 straight regular-season decisions over two seasons, was placed on the DL earlier this month with sciatica. ... Garcia is 4-0 in four career starts against the Cubs.

Finally! Bonds hits 714th HR to tie Ruth
Giants slugger takes Athletics' Halsey deep after 9-game homer drought
OAKLAND, Calif. - San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds finally hit the 714th home run of his career on Saturday, to tie Babe Ruth for No. 2 all-time.
Bonds had not homered in his previous nine games, not since May 7 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bonds' historic shot Saturday came off of Oakland A's starter Brad Halsey, who had never faced Bonds before.
Five years to the day after hitting three homers in a game to pass Eddie Matthews and Ernie Banks for sole possession of 12th place on the all-time home run list, Bonds was penciled in as a DH and went 0-for-3 with a walk Friday in the Giants’ 1-0 loss to the A’s in the series opener.
“I’m staying out of the news, brotha,” the seven-time NL MVP said before hitting the showers and then the road.
Eric Chavez’s third-inning RBI groundout provided all the offense, and Dan Haren and Huston Street combined on a two-hitter as Oakland (22-19) won for the fifth straight time.
Steve Finley and Mike Sweeney had hits for the Giants (21-21), ending a three-game winning streak in which San Francisco totaled 34 runs and 41 hits.
As has been customary on the road this season, Bonds was booed by the A’s crowd every time he stepped to the plate. Bonds had a chance to tie the game when he came up with two out in the ninth inning, but struck out swinging weakly on a pitch from the hard-throwing Street.
“That’s the fun part of the game,” Street said. “It was one of those fairy-tale situations. Ninth inning, one-run game, Barry Bonds at the plate, one of the best all-time home run hitters. To be able to get the job done for my team was special.”
Since hitting career homer No. 713 on May 7 in Philadelphia, the seven-time NL MVP is batting just .143 (4-for-28) with 10 walks. Three of those hits came in two games earlier this week against Houston.
“He had some good swings on pitches that were really tough,” Giants manager Felipe Alou said Friday. “They were pitching to Barry and got him out. ... They (home runs) will come, especially if they pitch to him.”
As he tries to get out of the rut, Bonds will face Brad Halsey (1-2, 3.21 ERA) for the first time.
The left-hander, making his fourth start after nine relief appearances this season, lasted just 4 1-3 innings against the New York Yankees last Saturday, giving up four runs, five hits and four walks in a 4-3 loss.
“They’re just another team in the American League. A good one, but just another team,” said Halsey, who came up with New York in 2004 and was later sent to Arizona as part of the deal for Randy Johnson. “They made me work, work hard, get my pitch count up, and that’s why it was such a very short day. It wasn’t good.”
Halsey has walked 10 batters in 15 1-3 innings since moving into the starting rotation.
Bonds has homered off a record 419 different pitchers.
Jason Schmidt (3-2, 3.20) did not record a decision in his last outing, allowing two runs and three hits with three walks through seven innings in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Schmidt has allowed just five runs in 32 innings pitched over his last four starts. He is 2-1 all-time in his career against Oakland, with both wins coming at McAfee Coliseum.

Major League Baseball licenses team logos for caskets, urns
CHICAGO - Die-hard baseball fans will soon have a way to be close to their favorite teams in the afterlife.
Eternal Image Inc., which makes customized caskets and urns, said on Friday it has signed a multiyear licensing agreement with Major League Baseball that allows the company to reproduce the names and logos of all 30 league teams on a new line of caskets and urns.
“Fans incorporate baseball in nearly every aspect of life,” Eternal Image Chief Executive Clint Mytych said. The caskets could appeal to “a market that is just waiting for a way to make team loyalty a final statement of a great passion in their lives," he said.
The urns and caskets will go on sale next year at prices from about $600 to $3,500, Mytych said.
“Our clubs receive these requests with some frequency. We have really passionate fans,” Major League Baseball spokeswoman Susan Goodenow said, adding that the deal gives the sport’s governing body control of the tastefulness of the product.
Sports licensing accounted for an estimated $14.5 billion in retail sales last year in the United States, up 1.9 percent from 2004, according to the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association.
The idea of sports teams’ logos and colors on caskets is not new as fans of Argentina’s most popular soccer team, Boca Juniors, can buy their own coffins decorated in team colors and symbols for $650 to $800, a small fortune for many of its working-class followers.
One of Boca’s soccer field chants says: “The day I die, I want my coffin painted blue and gold, like my heart.”

Gammons in ICU after surgery for brain aneurysm
Longtime ESPN Baseball analyst Peter Gammons is out of surgery and resting in intensive care after undergoing an operation to treat an aneurysm in his brain Tuesday. Gammons suffered the aneurysm Tuesday morning near his home on Cape Cod, Mass. He was airlifted to a Boston hospital, where the surgery was performed.
Gammons, 61, is probably the best-known baseball writer of his generation, first with the Boston Globe, beginning in 1969, then for Sports Illustrated, before joining ESPN in 1990.
He was honored with J.G. Taylor Spink Award for outstanding baseball writing during the 2005 Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y. He was selected in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
He started his career as a reporter for the Boston Globe in 1969 and wrote a very popular weekly Sunday baseball column for many years. He has also worked for Sports Illustrated covering the National Hockey League, college basketball and Major League Baseball (1976-78, 1986-90).
In 1986, upon his return to Sports Illustrated as a senior writer following a second stay at the Globe, he wrote numerous stories covering some of baseball's most important news events, as well as authoring "Inside Baseball," Sports Illustrated's weekly baseball notebook.
Gammons primarily serves as a studio analyst for ESPN's Baseball Tonight, but he also does regular spots for SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and ESPN Radio and contributes to ESPN The Magazine. He is a columnist and writes a popular Weblog for ESPN.com.
Gammons is also the author of "Beyond the Sixth Game", a look at free agency.
Born April 9, 1945, Gammons is a native of Boston, raised in nearby Groton, Mass. He attended the University of North Carolina and is married to his wife, Gloria.
I hope he makes a full recovery.
Cubs fans pelt field after Pierzynski HR
CHICAGO (AP) — With the Cubs so close to winning, fans littered Wrigley Field with plastic bottles, cups, and other debris Saturday after A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-out, ninth-inning homer to send the White Sox to an 8-6 victory.
The game was delayed nearly five minutes as security and the grounds crew came out to pick up the litter. Most of it fell on the warning track in the outfield, although some items, including a baseball, came out of the stands from behind the Cubs' dugout.
"I guess they can voice their opinions however they want to," Cubs center fielder Juan Pierre said.
"They shouldn't throw anything on the field. It was sad. It was frustrating for us to lose a game and have the fans react like this."
Much of the anger apparently was directed at Cubs closer Ryan Dempster, who retired the first two batters in the ninth with the Cubs leading 6-5. But two straight batters then reached base ahead of Pierzynski's homer.
Shortly after Pierzynski rounded the bases and got in the dugout, items began sailing onto the field. The Cubs are 1-11 in their last 12 homes games.
"It's tough because you never like to see that," Dempster said after blowing his fifth save of the season. "I wish I would have gotten the last out and you never would have seen that. It's tough."
The Cubs, who have lost two straight and four of five to the White Sox this season, dropped to 29-51.
Pierzynski has been in the center of the rivalry all season, first after he was punched by the Cubs' Michael Barrett on May 20, setting off a brawl.
"You don't want to see anyone throw anything on the field," Pierzynski said.
"You understand when your guy hits a home run and they throw the home run ball back. But you don't expect them to throw cups and throw everything else. ... You fear for Jacque (Jones), you fear for Juan Pierre and you fear for the outfielders and you fear for some fans who aren't doing anything and they might have the opportunity to get hurt."

Bonds could be indicted this month
Giants slugger investigated by grand jury for perjury and tax evasion
Several baseball sources believe San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds will be indicted in the next two weeks, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said that the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco is considering whether to seek an indictment against Bonds, possibly next week, for perjury and tax evasion.
A grand jury, which has been hearing evidence, is due to expire within the next two weeks, the Daily News added. Attorneys told the newspaper that generally when a grand jury reaches the end of its term, a prosecutor will seek an indictment.
The grand jury will convene in San Francisco on one of the next upcoming Thursdays and might be asked to consider the evidence against Bonds, the Daily News said. Then, at least 12 of the 23 grand jury members must agree that there is "probable cause" that a crime was committed and that Bonds did it.
The grand jury could indict Bonds, or else the U.S. attorney could decide not to seek an indictment at that point or request from a judge an extension to continue the grand jury, the Daily News said.
The Daily News said that among those testifying to the grand jury have included former Bonds physician Arthur Ting, San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte (no relation to BALCO founder Victor Conte), and Bonds' former girlfriend Kimberly Bell.
The Daily News said that Bell reportedly told the grand jury that Bonds gave her about $80,000 and told her he used steroids before meeting BALCO officials.
The New York Times reported that Bonds' lawyer, Michael Rains, acknowledged that a longtime friend of Bonds named Steve Hoskins is also a witness against the slugger.
The Times said that Hoskins and Bonds had a falling out over Hoskins' company, Kent Collectibles of San Carlos, Calif. The newspaper reported that in June of 2002, Bonds went to the federal government accusing Hoskins of "basically being a fraud, a chear and a liar," Rains said. Bonds claimed that Hoskins was forging his name on memorabilia items.
Michael Cardoza, Hoskins’s lawyer, denied those allegations to the Times, and said that Hoskins' goal was only to "tell the truth and protect Steve and prove to them that Barry is not a truth-teller.”
Bonds told a grand jury in December 2003 that he did not knowingly take performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds’ personal trainer asked a federal appeals court on Monday to allow him to leave prison on bail nearly a week after a judge ordered him locked up for refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating the San Francisco Giants slugger.
Greg Anderson, who served three months in prison after pleading guilty last year for his role in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroid scandal, was held in contempt of court last week and taken to prison.
At that time, Judge William Alsup denied Anderson’s plea for bail, ruling that granting such a request would defeat the purpose of jailing the trainer to compel him to testify.
On Monday, Anderson’s attorney Mark Geragos asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn Alsup’s ruling and set Anderson free.
Geragos argued in the court papers that Anderson shouldn’t have to testify because of numerous leaks of ostensibly secret grand jury testimony to two San Francisco Chronicle reporters, who have also written a book based largely on leaked testimony.
Grand jury testimony is done in secret and usually can’t be publicly released without the consent of the witness.
“The gross, callous and destructive breaches of grand jury secrecy in this case create ample just cause for Mr. Anderson’s refusal to testify,” Anderson’s appeal stated.
Geragos said in the court filing that government lawyers offered Anderson immunity from prosecution to testify, but he declined because “of his belief that his testimony would likely be released to the press.”
Geragos further argued that the agreement Anderson made with prosecutors to plead guilty last year included language that stated he didn’t have to cooperate with the investigation.
Geragos also argued that Anderson shouldn’t have to testify because he was the target of an illegal wiretap.
Prosecutors have a tape recording of Anderson discussing illegal steroids with another person who they say made the recording during a face-to-face meeting. The prosecutors argue they didn’t obtain the tape illegally, but have promised not to use its contents when questioning Anderson.
Alsup hasn’t directly ruled on the matter, but said since the government has vowed not to use the tape, Anderson should still have to testify.
But Geragos said Anderson and his attorneys have never heard the tape nor seen a transcript of the conversation. Geragos didn’t return telephone calls Monday.
“We believe the court imposed the proper sanction, beyond that we will respond in court as appropriate,” U.S. attorney spokesman Luke Macaulay said.
The appeals court is not expected to rule until it receives the government’s response, due July 13.
Anderson was initially ordered in March to testify to the grand jury investigating whether Bonds perjured himself when he testified to the original BALCO grand jury in December 2003 that he never knowingly used steroids or other banned performance enhancing drugs.
But Anderson has twice refused to testify when called before the grand jury. He is to be jailed until he changes his mind or until the grand jury’s term expires, which is expected in the next couple of weeks.

Wow! How about them Tigers? Coming back from behind in 3 of their last 4 games to win the game! I'm so happy for them! Last night's game was awesome (even though I missed the Grand Slam that put the Tigers ahead of the White Sox!)! And even though I missed today's game (I forgot it was on), it was still great to see the Tigers win again!

I think it's been over 20 years, if I remember right.
Congrats to the AL for coming back and winning the All star game. Texas has had a few hands in the past few games.

Prosecutors extend Bonds investigation
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - With Barry Bonds still firmly in the sights of a federal steroid investigation, prosecutors will impanel a new grand jury to take up where an outgoing one left off Thursday and consider perjury and tax-evasion charges against the star slugger.
"We are not finished," U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan said. "We have postponed the decision (to indict) for another day in light of some recent developments."
Word that an indictment wasn't imminent came as one grand jury's term expired, and the lawyer for Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, said his client already had been subpoenaed to testify next Thursday before the new grand jury.
The new panel will further investigate whether Bonds lied under oath when he said he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs, attorney Mark Geragos said.
Geragos said Anderson will again refuse to testify.
"They don't even have enough to indict a ham sandwich, let alone Barry Bonds," said the slugger's lawyer, Michael Rains. But he seemed to back away slightly from Bonds' earlier statements that he didn't know the substances given to him by Anderson were steroids.
"He was suspicious in light of what he had read as to whether those were steroids or not," Rains told reporters outside the federal courthouse here.
Bonds arrived at AT&T Park with his 16-year-old batboy son. As reporters moved toward his locker, team spokesman Blake Rhodes said Bonds would have no comment.
Major League Baseball declined to comment.
Giants owner Peter Magowan declined to comment on the case, noting there was "nothing new," but said he hoped to see a resolution soon.
"I think all of us would like to see a resolution, I mean everybody in baseball," Magowan said. "I'm sure the commissioner would like to see one, I'm sure Barry would like to see one, and I'm sure the fans would like to see one."
Anderson, a key witness, was freed at midday from the federal prison where he was sent more than two weeks ago for refusing to testify against his childhood friend.
"They can subpoena him every day for the rest of this year, and it doesn't matter," Geragos said. "He's not going to talk."
The judge who ordered Anderson to prison on July 5 said he would be held until he agreed to testify against Bonds or the grand jury's term expired.
Joseph Russienello, the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco from 1982 to 1990, said handing the case off to a new grand jury means the federal government can lock Anderson up for the length of the new grand jury's term, which could extend beyond a year. The threat of a lengthy jail term can convince even the most intransigent witnesses to cave.
"It's no longer a two-week vacation," Russienello said. "Twelve months usually has a way of getting people sensitized to giving truthful testimony."
Speculation has been mounting for weeks that Bonds, one of the biggest names in professional sports, would be indicted Thursday with the grand jury expiring. His lawyers had said they were preparing a defense.
But soon after the grand jury reported to the federal courthouse to begin the final day of its probe, the U.S. Attorney's office issued a statement saying it "is not seeking an indictment (Thursday) in connection with the ongoing steroids-related investigation."
"There's temporary relief in the news we heard today," Rains said. The lawyer said Bonds was elated when he heard of Anderson's release and asked when the two can start working out together again.
"He's hoping this is the end of it," Rains said, "but he doesn't know that, nor do I."
Anderson appears to be the key to whether perjury charges could stick against Bonds, and prosecutors referred to his refusal to testify.
"We will continue to move forward actively in this investigation - including continuing to seek the truthful testimony of witnesses whose testimony the grand jury is entitled to hear," said Luke Macaulay, a spokesman for Ryan, the U.S. attorney.
Bonds testified in 2003 that he thought substances given to him by Anderson were arthritis balm and flaxseed oil. Authorities suspected Bonds was lying and that those items were "the clear" and "the cream" - two performance-enhancing drugs tied to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, the lab exposed as a steroids supplier to top athletes in baseball, track and other sports.
Although Bonds was promised immunity as long as he told the truth, doubts soon surfaced.
- His former girlfriend, Kimberly Bell, testified the slugger told her he had used steroids, according to Bell's lawyer. Bonds' attorney accused Bell of trying to extort money from Bonds and using the platform to promote a book that never was published.
- IRS agent Jeff Novitzky, lead investigator in the steroids probe, said in court filings that BALCO founder Victor Conte told him Bonds used "the clear" on a regular basis.
- Federal agents who raided Anderson's house seized doping calendars, price lists and other documents pointing to Bonds' use of steroids and human growth hormone. Federal prosecutors say they need Anderson, in part, to interpret the calendars, which seem to spell out Bonds' schedule for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Anderson was one of five men convicted in the BALCO scandal. He was sentenced to three months behind bars and three months of home confinement in October after pleading guilty to money laundering and steroid distribution.
He was called to testify before the perjury grand jury and refused. A federal judge found him in contempt of court and ordered him jailed.
Geragos protested, saying Anderson was the victim of an illegal government wiretap and that because Anderson's refusal to cooperate with government investigators is noted in his earlier plea agreement, he cannot be forced to testify.
"He took three months in jail rather than cooperate," Geragos said.
He also says Anderson can't trust that his testimony will be kept confidential because other BALCO grand jury testimony has been leaked to the press. Excerpts of testimony by Bonds and other key players in the case was published by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Geragos said he plans to repeat the same arguments.
Allegations of steroid use long have plagued Bonds, who passed Babe Ruth in May to become second only to Hank Aaron on the career home run list. They intensified in late 2003, when he testified before the original BALCO grand jury, which took testimony from about two dozen athletes.
Without Anderson's help, prosecutors still could indict Bonds on charges alleging he failed to pay taxes on money made through sales of autographs and other memorabilia. There is also the possibility Bonds could be indicted on perjury charges without Anderson's testimony.
"There comes a point in time ... where everybody needs to move on," Rains said. "We hope we have arrived at that point today."

Report: Feds got Bonds' medical records
Documents about knee surgeries might be used to bolster case against star
SAN FRANCISCO - Federal prosecutors obtained Barry Bonds’ medical files as part of their investigation into whether the slugger perjured himself when he said he never knowingly used steroids, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Two people familiar with the probe told the San Francisco Chronicle that the U.S. Attorney’s office received the medical records Wednesday in response to a subpoena issued to the San Francisco Giants. The sources requested anonymity because of the investigation’s sensitivity.
U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan said Thursday his office still was pursuing an “ongoing steroid-related investigation” even though a federal grand jury considering possible perjury and tax-evasion charges against Bonds expired that day without an indictment.
new grand jury is expected to be impaneled this Thursday.
Ryan said he had postponed his decision on whether to seek an indictment of Bonds “in light of some recent developments.” The receipt of the medical records was one of those developments, sources told the Chronicle.
The records are believed to include information about three operations Bonds had last season to treat his right knee, as well as a serious elbow injury that required surgery in 1999, the newspaper reported.
Bonds’ former girlfriend, Kimberly Bell, testified that Bonds blamed the elbow injury on steroid use, the Chronicle reported.
Prosecutors subpoenaed the documents nearly two months ago, but Bonds’ attorneys went to federal court to stop the government from obtaining the records. Prosecutors prevailed Tuesday and received the documents a day later.
“I am confident and certain that the records at issue will completely undermine any claim that Barry has used steroids at any time in his entire baseball career,” Bonds' lawyer Michael Rains wrote Friday in a statement e-mailed to the Chronicle.
Giants general counsel Jack Bair declined to comment.
At least three of Bonds’ surgeries were performed by Dr. Arthur Ting, who testified in the government’s perjury investigation and turned over his own medical records on Bonds, the Chronicle also reported.
The seven-time NL MVP is being investigated for allegedly lying to a federal grand jury investigating the steroids conspiracy case involving the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative.
In sworn testimony in December 2003, Bonds said he never knowingly took banned drugs and that he believed his trainer, Greg Anderson, had given him only legal substances, including flaxseed oil and an arthritis balm.

Brewers trade Lee to Rangers, get Cordero
The Milwaukee Brewers are trading slugger Carlos Lee to the Texas Rangers as part of a multiplayer deal, ESPN.com learned Friday.
The Brewers are sending Lee, minor league outfield prospect Nelson Cruz to the Rangers for relief pitcher Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix.
Lee, who can become a free agent after this season, is hitting .286 with 28 home runs and 81 RBI. He is a .284 career hitter over eight seasons with the White Sox (1999-2004) and Brewers (2005-06).
The Rangers (51-51) would still like to add another starting pitcher, but couldn't pass up the chance to add Lee as they strive for their first playoff appearance since 1999. Texas went into Friday's game against Kansas City in third place in the AL West, but only two games behind division-leading Oakland.
Cordero was the Rangers' closer until he set a major league record with five blown saves in April, and was replaced in that role by Akinori Otsuka. In his last appearance for Texas, Cordero allowed four runs in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The right-hander was 7-4 with six saves and a 4.81 ERA in 49 appearances.
Mench is hitting .284 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. Nix has been in the minor leagues since batting .094 (3-for-32) in nine games in April.
Both teams are checking for any medical issues before consummating the deal.

Yanks, Phils reach deal for Abreu
Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com
The Yankees and Phillies have reached a deal that will send right fielder Bobby Abreu to New York.
The Yankees received both Abreu and right-hander Cory Lidle in the deal.
In return, the Phillies got four minor leaguers — Class A shortstop C.J. Henry, the Yankees' first pick in the 2005 draft, Class AAA left-hander Matt Smith, 27, and catcher Jesus Sanchez, 18, and right-hander Carlos Monasterios, 20, both of whom are with the Yankees' rookie ball affiliate in the Class A Gulf Coast League.
In addition, the Yankees are expected to pick up the remainder of the roughly $19 million owed to Abreu, who was slated to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins but was a last-minute scratch.
Abreu, 32, had given assurances that he will waive his no-trade clause for the Yankees. It is not clear whether he required the Yankees to exercise his $16 million option for 2008.
The Abreu deal with the Yankees likely would be perceived as a massive salary dump by the Phillies. Neither of the Yankees' top prospects, Class AA right-hander Philip Hughes nor Class A outfielder Jose Tabata, were included in the trade.
With the deal, the Phillies cleared more than $20 million in payroll.
Abreu, 32, is owed more than $4 million this season and $15 million next season. In exchange for Abreu waiving his no-trade clause, the Yankees are expected to exercise his $16 million option for 2008.
Lidle, 34, is owed nearly $1.5 million, and will be a free agent at the end of the season.
The Phillies are expected to move several other players in addition to Abreu, including right-handed starter Jon Lieber and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes. They have been unable to find a taker for left fielder Pat Burrell, who, like Abreu, has a large salary and no-trade clause.
Now that the Phillies have traded Abreu, they are likely to keep outfielder David Dellucci, then attempt to re-sign him as a free agent.
Dellucci, batting .311 in a reserve role, has been the Philadelphia player most in demand on the trade market due to his pending free agency and modest $950,000 salary.
The Phillies' motivations for trading Abreu and others would be to change their chemistry and gain significant financial flexibility.
During his tenure with the Mariners, Phillies general manager Pat Gillick traded outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. after the 1999 season and lost shortstop Alex Rodriguez as a free agent the following year.
Gillick kept the team strong by reallocating the team's resources, gaining the rights to Japanese right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and acquiring several lesser veterans, building the 2001 Mariners into a 116-win juggernaut.

Twins' Liriano could soon land on DL
Minnesota Twins All-Star rookie Francisco Liriano is out indefinitely with a left elbow injury that could soon land him on the disabled list, according to a report in the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.
After missing a start with what was described as forearm inflammation, Liriano struggled on Monday night vs. Detroit as he allowed four runs on a career-high 10 hits in four innings.
The Star Tribune says the 22-year-old Liriano was on the verge of tears following the loss in the quiet Minnesota clubhouse. His voice cracked as he described the pain, pointing to the inside of his elbow.
Obviously playing without the 12-3 Liriano is a huge concern for the Twins.
What's more, the Star Tribune says he had an MRI on July 31 and was relieved to learn that there was no structural damage in the elbow; just the muscle inflammation.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Liriano will be reexamined by orthopedic physician Dan Buss after the team returns to Minnesota on Wednesday.
"It started bothering me in the second inning," Liriano said. "It really bothered me. I couldn't throw fastball, changeup, slider or anything."
Gardenhire described the problem as a muscular one.
"It's a muscular problem — as the game was going on, he started to feel it," Gardenhire said. "We had him checked out before, and everything was fine, but we'll have him checked out again. It's muscles, not his elbow."

Indians’ Hafner ties record with sixth slam
Cleveland DH matches Mattingly's mark during 11-run first inning vs. KC
CLEVELAND - Travis Hafner hit his sixth grand slam in Cleveland’s 11-run first inning to tie Don Mattingly’s single-season record and the Indians routed the Kansas City Royals 13-0 Sunday.
Hafner put Cleveland ahead 11-0 with his 35th homer of the season and tied Mattingly’s mark set with the New York Yankees in 1987.
The first 10 Indians to bat all reached base and scored against Luke Hudson (5-4).
It was the largest first inning by the Indians since opening with 11 runs against the Baltimore Orioles on July 6, 1954. The team record is a 14-run first inning against the Philadelphia Athletics on June 18, 1950.
Hafner is 8-for-13 with six homers and 29 RBIs this season with the bases loaded. It was his eighth career grand slam.
Rookie Jeremy Sowers (4-3) gave up five hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked one to help Cleveland complete a four-game series sweep and match a season-high six-game winning streak set April 4-11. The left-hander is 3-0 over his last five starts, allowing five earned runs in 36 innings to lower his ERA from 7.94 to 3.53.
Andrew Brown made his major league debut for Cleveland after being called up from Triple-A Buffalo and pitched two scoreless innings.
The Royals have been outscored 74-31 in losing 11 in a row at Jacobs Field since July 20, 2005.
Hudson gave up 10 earned runs and eight hits with three walks in one-third of an inning, falling to 5-1 since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha on June 30.
The right-hander walked Grady Sizemore and Hafner around a single by Jason Michaels with no outs in the first. Victor Martinez hit a two-run single and Shin-Soo Choo a two-run double to make it 4-0.
Ryan Garko singled and Jhonny Peralta got credit for an RBI when his fielder’s choice grounder was thrown away by shortstop Angel Berroa for an error.
Joe Inglett singled to load the bases and a walk to Andy Marte forced in a run to make it 6-0.
Sizemore singled off Hudson’s glove to score Peralta and after Michaels struck out, Hafner hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right, giving him 104 RBIs, five short of his career best. His 35th homer extended his career high.
Martinez doubled to finish Hudson, who was replaced by Todd Wellemeyer. The right-hander got Choo to ground out and Garko to fly to left to finally end the rally.
Garko homered in the fourth to make it 12-0 and Franklin Gutierrez hit his first career homer off Andrew Sisco in the eighth.
Wellemeyer gave up one run and two hits over 6 2-3 innings.
Notes: Hafner had been tied with Baltimore’s Jim Gentile (1961) and Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs (1955) with five grand slams. ... RHP Jeremy Guthrie was optioned back to Buffalo when the Indians called up Brown. ... Inglett returned to the Indians’ lineup after missing three games with a sprained left foot. ... Hudson has allowed 17 earned runs in only 2 2-3 innings (57.38 ERA) in two career starts against Cleveland. ... Royals CF David DeJesus’ leadoff single in the first extended his streak of reaching base safely to 19 games. ... The team record 14-run first inning in 1950 is tied for the AL record, and is one off the modern major league record.

Cubs outlast Astros in 18-inning marathon
HOUSTON - Fighting fatigue at the end of a long night, Matt Murton found the energy for another big hit.
Murton hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and a two-run single in the 18th, sending the Chicago Cubs to an 8-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday in the longest regular-season game in the 6-year history of Minute Maid Park.
“I was a little tired,” Murton said. “That’s just part of the game. You have to find a way to get over it. It was a great night in the sense we were able to win a game like that.”
Cubs manager Dusty Baker said he’s never managed a longer game. By the end, he was down to his last pitcher — and player — Rich Hill, who’s scheduled to start Wednesday. Thanks to Murton, Hill (3-5) only had to throw 28 pitches, shutting out the Astros in the 17th and 18th.
The teams used 18 pitchers in all, tying an NL record. Hill finally ended it after 5 hours, 36 minutes, by striking out Morgan Ensberg at 12:41 a.m. CDT on the game’s 542nd pitch.
That came about 45 minutes before another 18-inning game ended Tuesday night — the Arizona Diamondbacks won 2-1 at Colorado. It was the first time in major league history two games on the same day lasted as long as 18 innings, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The Cubs and Astros won’t get much sleep, either. The finale of their three-game series starts at 1:05 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.
It was Houston’s third 18-inning game in 10 months. The Astros outlasted Atlanta 7-6 in a home playoff game last October to advance to the NL championship series, and lost 8-7 in 18 innings at Pittsburgh on May 27.
“We normally win 18-inning games here,” Houston manager Phil Garner said. “We played hard and had great pitching performances. It was just a tough one to lose.”
Murton sent this one to extra innings with a leadoff homer in the ninth off Astros closer Brad Lidge, who blew a save in a game Roger Clemens started for the second time in a month.
Lidge’s fifth blown save this season cost him his job as the team’s closer, too.
“I’m going to take him out of the closer’s role,” Garner said. “It’s going to be closer-by-committee.”
Lidge was pulled from the closer’s role for a short stint earlier this season, as well.
Clemens was shaky in his 683rd career start, giving up five runs and seven hits — two of them homers — in six innings. It was the first time in 11 starts this season he yielded more than three earned runs and more than one home run.
The Rocket was long gone by the time Dave Borkowski (1-1) came on to pitch the final six innings for the Astros, who lost their fourth straight game.
Fans streamed out of the ballpark by the hundreds after each half inning, and only a few thousand were still around to see Murton’s go-ahead hit.
He didn’t mind one bit.
“Any time you play 18 innings, you want to come out on the winning side,” Murton said. “Our pitchers continued to put up zeros and we finally had an opportunity to win it.”
Aramis Ramirez led off the top of the 18th with a double and Jacque Jones, who hit a three-run homer off Clemens in the fifth, followed with a single to put runners at the corners.
John Mabry fouled out and Ronny Cedeno grounded out before Borkowski intentionally walked Michael Barrett, a .325 hitter, to load the bases. Murton singled to right, scoring Ramirez and Jones.
Borkowski allowed only four hits, three in the final inning.
“I didn’t feel like I was getting tired,” he said. “It was a gut-check. I just wanted to keep going out there until the end.”
Hill was the 25th player used by the Cubs, marking the first time since April 1986 that Chicago used that many in a game.
The Cubs won their longest game since Aug. 6, 1989, when they lost 5-4 to the Pirates in 18 innings.
Adam Everett had a two-run triple and pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro delivered a two-run double to spark a four-run rally in the sixth that gave Houston a 6-5 lead.
Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler each pitched a scoreless inning before Garner called on Lidge for the ninth. Lidge hadn’t blown a save since allowing two runs in a July 8 loss to St. Louis — a game Clemens also started.
The Cubs only needed one run this time and Murton got it right away, driving a 2-2 pitch into the left-field seats.
Clemens had won his last three starts against the Cubs, but trailed 1-0 after just four pitches.
Leadoff man Juan Pierre drove a 1-1 fastball over right fielder Lance Berkman’s head for his 10th triple. Cesar Izturis lined Clemens’ next pitch to center, putting Clemens behind for the first time in three starts.
Cedeno hit Clemens’ first pitch of the second inning into the left-field seats, just the fourth homer Clemens had allowed this season.
Aubrey Huff hit a two-run double in the fourth for Houston’s first runs in 14 1-3 innings. It came off Juan Mateo, the sixth rookie to start against Clemens this season.
In the sixth, Clemens threw a pitch that brushed past pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot’s chest. His next delivery nicked Theriot near his ribcage, prompting plate umpire Jeff Kellogg to issue warnings to Clemens and both dugouts.
Notes: The Cubs have homered in 10 consecutive games, their longest streak since September 2005, when they connected in 12 straight games. ... Pierre extended his road hitting streak to 18 games. ... Astros CF Willy Taveras extended his career-best hitting streak to 18 games, the longest active streak in the majors.

Both of Griffey's parents have cancer
Father and ex-Reds star has disease in prostate, mother in colon
CINCINNATI - It's a child's worst nightmare: Not one, but two parents facing a medical crisis. That's exactly what Ken Griffey Jr. is facing, after his mother and father were diagnosed with cancer.
The Cincinnati Reds star's agent, Brian Goldberg, confirmed to News 5 that Bertie Griffey is suffering from colon cancer. She will have major surgery in Orlando on Thursday.
Former Reds player Ken Griffey Sr. has been diagnosed with prostate cancer in its early stages, Goldberg said. The cancer might be treatable without surgery, but Griffey Sr. won't know more about his status until next week.
It's unknown whether Junior will stay with the Reds in St. Louis for the team's series finale against the Cardinals on Thursday afternoon.

Showalter, Scioscia among those suspended
NEW YORK (AP) - Managers Buck Showalter and Mike Scioscia and six others were suspended by Major League Baseball on Thursday following two days of trouble between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels.
Showalter will miss four games, starting with Texas' game Thursday night at Detroit. Bench coach Don Wakamatsu will run the team in the interim.
Scioscia was suspended for three games, starting with Thursday night's game against Seattle.
"We knew it was going to be something," Showalter said. "It's pretty much standard."
Texas reliever Scott Feldman drew the most severe penalty at six games. He hit Adam Kennedy with a pitch in the ninth inning Wednesday night, and the Angels infielder charged the mound, triggering a bench-clearing brawl.
Kennedy and Angels pitchers Kevin Gregg and Brendan Donnelly were suspended for four games. Bench coach Ron Roenicke will miss one game, on Sunday.
Texas pitcher Vicente Padilla was suspended for five games for throwing at a batter after receiving a warning Tuesday night.
The suspensions of Kennedy, Gregg and Padilla were set to start Thursday night, unless appealed. Donnelly and Feldman were scheduled to begin their penalties Tuesday.
All eight suspensions also carried undisclosed fines. Angels pitcher John Lackey and outfielder Juan Rivera also were fined.

Glavine might have blood clot in shoulder
NEW YORK (AP) - Tom Glavine's pitching shoulder is being examined for a possible blood clot, and the New York Mets left-hander could miss the rest of the season.
Glavine felt coldness in his left ring finger after his start Wednesday in Philadelphia. Depending on tests, the 40-year-old pitcher could return to the mound next weekend or require surgery. The Mets don't expect to receive test results until midweek.
"You get scared. You start wondering about the rest of your career, if there's going to be one," the two-time Cy Young Award winner said Sunday. "I had a wonderful career, and I've stayed healthy for the most part. I've envisioned my retirement, but I never envisioned it through an injury. So from that standpoint, it's uneasy.
"It's strange, too, because I sit here and I feel fine," he added. "Everything feels great. I don't have any pain anywhere or anything like that. It's just I have this something going on inside my shoulder that needs to be looked at."
Glavine is 12-6 with a 3.92 ERA for the NL East-leading Mets and his 287 victories rank third among active pitchers behind Roger Clemens (345) and Greg Maddux (329). New York already is without Pedro Martinez, on the 15-day disabled list after straining his right calf Monday.
Glavine's left middle finger and index finger were diagnosed in 1990 with Raynaud's, a condition caused by poor circulation that leads to numbness and coldness.
"We just thought it was an extension of that, and then when they got further into the tests," he said. "I guess they picked something up when they did the ultrasound."
This was the first time his ring finger was bothered, and it still felt cold Sunday.
"The possibilities go from doing an angiogram and seeing that this is just an isolated incident - I don't have a problem, that I could be pitching by the weekend - to I have to have surgery and I could be done for the year," he said. "I'm hoping for the best but certainly am prepared and understand what the worst is."
Mets general manager Omar Minaya and manager Willie Randolph were optimistic Glavine would not be sidelined long.
"We believe that Tommy hopefully will be OK," Minaya said before the Mets played Colorado.
Glavine's injury was first reported by the Daily News on Sunday. He said the injury was not life-threatening.
"When you start hearing blood clots and aneurysms and stuff like that, you start thinking heart attacks or strokes and stuff. It's not the same thing," he said. "Believe me, I've asked that question to every doctor I've talked to."
With Glavine and Martinez sidelined, John Maine, Steve Trachsel and Dave Williams will start against St. Louis in a series beginning Tuesday. Orlando Hernandez also is in the rotation, Brian Bannister or Oliver Perez could be brought up from Triple-A Norfolk and Mike Pelfrey is recovering from a strained back muscle.
"You almost expect this kind of stuff. I've been through it many, many times, and you learn to react on the fly and keep your wits about you," Randolph said. "It's always a challenge in a lot of ways to get through these kind of things."

Well the Yankees just swept the Red Sox.
Phils' Rowand out 4-6 weeks with broken ankle
As the Phillies make their push for the NL wild card, they will have to do it without starting center fielder Aaron Rowand.
Rowand suffered a fractured left ankle in a scary outfield collision with teammate Chase Utley on Monday night and will miss four to six weeks, the team announced Tuesday.
The Phillies placed Rowand on the 15-day disabled list and said they would make a roster move to replace him at a later time.
Rowand left Philadelphia's game with the Chicago Cubs in the eighth inning on Monday night after colliding with Utley.
Rowand was charging a flair off the bat off John Mabry in short center, and Utley was running at full speed from the infield. The second baseman appeared to catch the ball just before the collision, which snapped his arm back and knocked the ball loose.
Rowand tumbled forward a number of times, landing awkwardly on his wrist, head and ankle before finally settling. He stayed on the ground clutching his wrist and then winced when he tried to stand and had to be helped off. He was unable to put weight on his right leg as he struggled into the dugout with the help of teammates.
Rowand was undergoing precautionary X-rays on a sprained right ankle, the team said in the ninth inning.
Utley stayed in the game and did not appear to be badly injured.
Mabry cruised all the way around to third base on the play, but he was stranded. The Phillies led 6-3 at the time.
Rowand missed time earlier this season after breaking his nose in a crash into the outfield fence while making a catch in Philadelphia.
With their 6-5 victory on Monday night, the Phillies (62-62) got back to the .500 mark and currently trail the wild-card leading Reds by 2½ games.
Rowand is hitting .262 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI this season after arriving in Philadelphia from the Chicago White Sox in a trade for Jim Thome.
He will return to Philadelphia from Chicago to see a specialist after he is cleared to fly.

Even though I live in New England and do follow the trials and tribulations of the Red Sox, and of course the Yankees, my heart is and always has been with the San Francisco Giants. For you younger folks, when I started following the Giants, they were the New York Giants, but moved to San Francisco in 1957. Willie Mays has always been my favorite player of all-time. The "Say-Hey Kid" was the best I've ever seen in my time. I also was a big fan of Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal. I do like what Barry Bonds is doing as far as home runs go, but for me anyway, he is not Willie.
Why I brought that up is that when the Giants and the Dodgers left in the 50's, they left not only a big gap for pro baseball, but they also left a lot of sad fans. Many of them became New York Met fans five years later in 1962. The Mets were a doormat that first year. They were terrible, but since then they have made New York proud on a few occasions. This year's Mets are outstanding. In my opinion, they are by far the best team in the National League. I can't for the life of me understand how the Red Sox swept them during Inter-League Play?? I don't think the Sox are dead just yet, but they are up against it considering how well the Yankees, White Sox, Twins, Oakland A's are playing, let alone the fantastic year the Detroit Tigers are having! So Boston has their work cut out just to try for a wild card for openers. If the Yankees falter, then they may have a shot there as well, but right now, it is not looking real good for them. Now since I have always been a National League fan at heart, if the Mets get in the Series, then I'm for em' all the way. Of course if by some miracle from above sees the Giants get in, then all bets are off!:D But that ain't gonna happen.

Glavine to return to rotation next Friday
Left-hander Tom Glavine will return to the Mets' rotation next Friday in Houston, FOXSports.com has learned.
Glavine, 40, had wanted to pitch Wednesday in Colorado, but the Mets will start left-hander Dave Williams that night, giving Glavine additional time to recover.
Glavine, 40, has not pitched since Aug. 16, when he experienced coldness in his left ring finger.
He underwent tests to determine whether his problem stemmed from a blood clot that might have ended his season or even his career.
But tests showed that his condition was not serious and could be treated with baby aspirin and other medication that would help his circulation.
Glavine, 12-6 with a 3.92 ERA this season, is 13 victories short of 300 for his career.

Twins are in the lead for the AL wild cards.
The Cinci Reds are now tied for first place in the National League Central Division.
That didn't last long.
Looks like the Rangers aren't going to playoffs.
Beat-up Red Sox send Papi home for heart tests
BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, the AL leader in home runs and RBI, will have more tests for heart palpitations before he returns to the lineup.
The tests will take a few days, said Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill on Tuesday.
David had not experienced any additional episodes of palpitations until Monday evening," Gill said. "With the recurrence of these symptoms, we would like David to be fully examined and tested before he is allowed to return to the field."
Big Papi was a late scratch for Boston's game Monday night at Oakland for what was first thought to be the flu. Ortiz, who on Sunday hit his major league-leading 47th home run at Seattle, already spent time in a Boston hospital earlier this month for the condition.
Ortiz had said he thoughtthe symptoms were caused by fatigue.
"He will get a clean bill of health before he plays again," manager Terry Francona said. "The games are important, but we have a responsibility to do what's right."
Said Sox reliever Mike Timlin: "It's not good. This game is nothing compared to someone's health or family. We don't play games with people's lives. I don't know any of the details. All I can do is pray for him."
Ortiz wasn't the only problem for the beat up Red Sox. Before Monday's game they placed rookie left-hander Jon Lester on the 15-day disabled list and sent him back to Boston for further evaluation of his troublesome back.
Then the Sox sent pitcher Kyle Snyder back to the hotel because of the bug that has been going around the clubhouse.
And All-Star left fielder Manny Ramirez was out of the starting lineup for the fourth time in five games with a sore right knee. Francona doesn't expect him to play again until the team returns home later this week.
The A's took advantage, getting homers from Frank Thomas and Nick Swisher in a 9-0 rout.
Ortiz was scheduled to be seen by Dr. Larry Roman.
Francona, general manager Theo Epstein and trainer Paul Lessard met with Ortiz just more than an hour before game time.
"We honestly think he's OK, but he can't play like that," Francona said. "We can't do it."
Lester, one of four rookies on the Red Sox pitching staff, originally was slated to start Monday's series opener at Oakland, but Kason Gabbard took his place in the rotation. The move is retroactive to Thursday.
Lester almost didn't take the mound Wednesday night against the Angels in Anaheim, where he beat Kelvim Escobar and threw 96 pitches over five innings.
"He came out of that start the other day with his back grabbing at him," said Francona, whose reeling Red Sox were coming off a three-game sweep by the Mariners in Seattle. "We just kind of felt we'd send him back to Boston and get him thoroughly checked. He's a big part of our future. We've asked a lot of him already. We're a little concerned."
Lester is 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 15 starts this year. Shutting him down for the rest of the season is not being considered at this point, though Francona will monitor him closely over the season's final month.
"He'll get a clean bill of health and we'll all feel better," Francona said. "We don't want to hurt this kid. ... If we had to shut him down, we would."
Boston purchased the contract of first baseman Carlos Pena from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Lester's roster spot and transferred Adam Stern to the 60-day DL with a hamstring injury.
Pena started at first base and on one play dived over the short padded wall along the first-base line and fell awkwardly into the crowd before getting up unharmed.
Even Francona, who has been taking blood-thinning medication for several years, was spitting out blood only hours before game time -- as well as during Sunday's game at Safeco Field. He had bitten a chunk out of the inside of his left cheek, causing the excessive bleeding.
When the team gets back to Boston, catcher Jason Varitek and right fielder Trot Nixon both will be close to rejoining the team.
Varitek had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Aug. 3, while Nixon has been on the 15-day DL since July 31 with a strained right biceps. Varitek will probably only play four or five innings when he first returns.
"We have to use some common sense," Francona said. "We have to try to find a way to survive and win games. Right now, we're not the team we were a month ago. We're beat up and playing different guys."

Red Sox lefty Lester diagnosed with form of lymphoma
BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher Jon Lester has a form of lymphoma and will start treatment in the coming week, the team said Friday.
Enlarged lymph nodes were identified when Lester, 22, was tested to determine the cause of back pain that sent him to the disabled list last Monday. The club said Friday he has a treatable form of anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a type of cancer that forms in the body's lymph system.
Manager Terry Francona visited Lester in the hospital Thursday morning and several players commented later that day, before the diagnosis was announced. He also met with the team about an hour before Friday's 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
It was pretty quiet. That's part of our family in here and we're all astonished," reliever Mike Timlin said.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon, who came up through the minors with Lester, said Friday, "they say it's curable or treatable and they're expecting him to be at spring training with us next year."
On Thursday, pitcher Curt Schilling referred to the melanoma his wife dealt with several years ago.
"Having been in a situation where cancer was an operative word, it's an incredibly scary thing," Schilling said. "You're talking about a kid at the beginning of his life."
Lester, a left-hander, is 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings.
He was called up to the majors for the first time June 10, when he started in a 7-4 loss to Texas. He wasn't involved in the decision. He improved to 5-0 with a 1-0 victory at Kansas City on July 18.
On Thursday, Timlin said baseball pales in significance to Lester's health.
"It's his life. It's not him not being able to get out of the sixth inning," Timlin said. "He's 22. That's a long future not to have if you come up with an illness that you can't get rid of so we are praying for him.
"Winning baseball games, yeah, that's great. Losing baseball games, no, that's not very much fun. But dealing with horrible things in human life, that's a whole lot worse than losing."
Anaplastic large cell lymphoma is one of a group of cancers known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said Dr. Robert Soiffer, chief of the division of hematologic malignancies at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
It is a disease that can strike at any age," said Soiffer, who is not involved in Lester's treatment. "It's responsive to chemotherapy and very treatable."
Prognosis depends on the stage at which the disease is caught, Soiffer said. Age can also play a limited role in determining a patient's outcome, he said.
"In general, younger patients ... have a better prognosis than older ones," Soiffer said.
Red Sox president Larry Lucchino is a non-Hodgkins lymphoma survivor.
Lester, from Tacoma, Wash., was Boston's first pick in the 2002 draft. In his first four minor-league seasons, he had a 24-22 record with a 3.38 ERA in 73 games, 69 of them starts, and was considered one of the Red Sox's top prospects.
Last year with Double-A Portland he had an 11-6 record and led the Eastern League with a 2.61 ERA.
This season with Triple-A Pawtucket, he was 3-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts before being promoted.
