SHELBURNE, Ont. (CP) - A new wind farm has begun pumping power into Ontario's electricity grid.

The Melancthon I Wind Farm north of Orangeville, Ont., is the first of several such projects designed to supply the province with clean power.

The $126-million generating facility will provide 67.5 megawatts - enough to power about 20,000 homes a year.

The second phase of the project will provide another 132 megawatts of power - enough for 40,000 homes.

Energy Minister Donna Cansfield says the province had just 15 megawatts of wind-power just two years ago.

She noted the Liberal government plans to ensure the province has 1,300 megawatts of such green power by the end of 2008.

"The government is continuing to deliver on its promise to support renewable energy as part of its overall plan to build a sustainable energy future for Ontario," Cansfield said.
