The swank Swiss Red Cross Ball in Geneva on May 13 is raising money for the Thai Red Cross Society's Children's Home.

Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya is the honoured guest at “La Nuit des Orchidees”, as this year’s event is called.

It’s hosted by the Swiss Red Cross, Thai Airways International, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Swiss International Airlines.

This is the fifth Swiss Red Cross Ball, and with an Asian theme it’s marking the 140th anniversary of the Red Cross. Some 900 people are expected, including European royalty, diplomats and leading businessmen.

Providing the entertainment will be Chinese-Thai pop violinist Vanessa-Mae, backed by a symphony orchestra, and a display of fashions by Thailand’s Pichita Atelier. The fabrics come courtesy of the Silpacheep Promotion Foundation.

The main event, however, will be a charity auction, which this year offers a pair of first-class seats aboard Thai Airways from Zurich to Phuket.

THAI executive vice president Vasing Kittikul says the airline is honoured to be involved and happy to be promoting the Kingdom’s tourism.

THAI is flying Pichita and 20 others to Geneva for the occasion.
This year also commemorates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relation between Thailand and Switzerland, so our ambassador, Pradap Pibulsonggram, is supplying the feast for the night – top Thai dishes from L’Hotel Beau Rivage.

Needless to say, there’ll be plenty of elegant orchids on view at the ball.
“Supporting this event,” Tourism Authority governor Juthamas Siriwan notes, “is a good chance for us to publicise the ‘Thailand Grand Invitation’ campaign and invite the guests at the ball to join the celebrations for His Majesty the King’s 60th anniversary on the throne in June.”
