The survey was organised by the book of British Hit Singles and Albums and NME.com and votes came from as far afield as New Zealand, Croatia and Colombia.

Fans were given no pre-ordained list to chose from in the survey, to celebrate 50 years of the Official UK Albums Chart.

British Hit Singles and Albums editor David Roberts said: "Usually these polls are full of records that people have only just bought because they are freshest in the mind.

"But this poll shows that the truly great albums always have longevity.

"Only two albums in the Top 20 were released in the last five years, so the voters have clearly thought long and hard about their decision.

"We believe our readers are the most knowledgeable music fans in the country so for them to have decided that Definitely Maybe should be the Number One album is really something."

It's great that she made it :D
I still don't agree with these things though, it's all about opinion. As you've said why are the Spice Girls in it?

Thanks. Many great albums....and some extremely questionable ones (*cough* #32 *cough*) ...and Oasis #1? ...that would only happen on a British list.

But I think Shania being pretty much the highest ranked female on the list is cool. :D

Nah I don't pay attention to these lists, they are always full of recent artists or ones heavily featured in that magazine. Half those artists would send me to sleep.

Noel and Liam Gallagher. They always fight with each other.

Glad Shania is quite high. Disappointed in the fact that a) Abbey Road was only #14, b) Joshua Tree only #11, c) Oasis made #1. For a start Abbey Road and Joshua Tree are two of the best albums ever created AND Oasis are just Beatles wannabes. Wrongness.
